Unplanned induction, Posterior and crooked, and the OB was *manually* turned her on her way down. (Yeah, it was as pleasant as it sounds.). I will spare you the other details, but will say it was a long tough road, but everything worked out in the end.

I am totally rooting for you to have a smooth, easy delivery!!!

Dd was posterior... I laboured for what seemed like forever... Finally after 20 hours they let me have an epidural even though I wasn't at a 4 yet (their typical requirement for getting one). I was a 3 when I got my epi, and after that things went very quickly. I was fully dilated just 5 hours later. A nap helped me feel sooo much better and I think sped things up.

I pushed a long time...2.5 hours . Finally they called the specialist in to use the vacuum and she was out one contraction later. After all that I was very sore and swollen but only had one small internal tear.

The Drs told me that if she hadn't been posterior everything would have been much quicker. I'm just glad I didn't have to have an emergency c-section...but hopefully next baby comes out into the world a bit faster!!

Good luck :-)

ETA: the Drs said she turned as she came through the canal...they tried to turn her back during each contraction but couldn't. So I don't know if my long labor was related to her being posterior, but the long pushing definitely was!

J was posterior and crooked, he didn't turn but I was able to have a vaginal birth with the help of the vacuum and episiotomy.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: J had a black eye and bruised face too!

@lemondrop: J turned posterior when my water broke in the hospital, he was on the bigger side so he got wedged crooked as well

@coopsmama: My second was posterior for most of the pregnancy- it was so incredibly uncomfortable every time he moved during those last couple months. I had about 2 weeks of on and off pre-labor, went in to be induced for high blood pressure, but went into labor in triage. He turned after they broke my water, all my worrying and it turned out to be a no big deal at all! I got an epidural just based on my last labor experience (my first had weird positioning, but not posterior), but it was a fast and easy labor the second time around. He popped out after 15 minutes of pushing and a small vacuum assist because his hand was up by his face. The hand was the reason I tore just a tiny bit and needed two stitches. Recovery was super easy compared to my first and I felt pretty normal within a week.

@coopsmama: I do them before bed, and when I'm just hanging out on the floor playing with my son. He thinks it's funny to say "moo/meow" with me. And when my back hurts.

Ugh, I really hope I don't have another posterior baby!! I feel like LO1 kicked soooo much more than this one, and I've heard that posterior babies can feel like that, since their hands and feet are towards your belly. This guy feels more like squirms than sharp jabs, so I hope it means he's turned around in the right direction.

I had the same attitude going into labor. I wanted to do natural, but if I had back labor, I wasn't going be a hero. But since my epidural didn't work because of the back labor, I'm back to wanting to do natural. But on the other hand...delivering a posterior baby naturally...
But we made it through once, right??

I'll ask my MW tomorrow if she knows if he is and if I can do anything to turn him!

@coopsmama: I was planning to avoid intervention. But when I decided to go ahead with it, it was definitely the right choice. I was exhausted. I was able to get a little bit of sleep before pushing, and pushed very effectively, which was important because she started to have trouble (long labor for her, too)! Who knows what your experience will be like. I've since heard many similar stories from mamas with posterior babies, but every labor and birth is different, I think keeping an open mind and being willing to acknowledge when an intervention will be useful, is a great approach regardless of babe's position. That's what medications are there for!

Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences with me!

@oliviaoblivia: 4 days after getting to the hospital?! What a nightmare. I bet the c-section was sweet relief. I would have been begging for one long before that for sure.

@futuremama: That sounds ideal for a posterior baby. I hope the same will be true with this birth!

@jedeve: I've been doing cat/cow exercises and pelvic rocks but need to be more consistent. It's hard to find time in the day to do those this go around. That's probably part of my problem. And I'm not sure how my midwife can tell but when she feels the baby's position she always tells me she is sunny side up/posterior. My chiropractor has confirmed that, too.

@skipra: DD is on my right side as well, but your experience definitely sounds doable. Reading that has made me feel a lot better.

@Silva: Thanks for all the details surrounding your experience. I really wanted to try and go natural with this baby, but now that it's looking like she will be posterior for at least some of the birth, I'm not so sure about being too staunch with that decision if you know what I mean. I went natural with DS for 30 hours and through hours of transition and the epi was what saved me from further intervention I think. I delivered him 36 hours in. I need to keep an open mind going into this labor.

I had a 56-hour labor. I didn't start progressing (just had terrible, unproductive back labor- they were real contractions that made me throw up from the pain but just weren't getting us anywhere!) until I got an epidural and a small amount of pit at about 50 hours. My body kind of held her up and posterior until I was able to relax (and, obviously, get some assistance from the pit). After that things went quickly and pretty smoothly- she turned and engaged, my water broke naturally, and I pushed her out in 40 minutes.

I'm really, really glad I decided to use some interventions. I think they helped me avoid a c-section (and my doc agrees!)

My LO was posterior. At one point during labor, the nurse said it looked like she was turning. DH can't remember which way she came out, but I'm assuming she turned?? I had back labor but it wasn't as bad as I was expecting. No epidural. Second degree tear. That part sucked.

DS2 was on my right side forever and Im pretty sure posterior but the midwives were not concerned. I went into labor naturally and had a pretty long but relatively easy early labor. Contractions started early afternoon on Wednesday and continued all night about every 10 minutes. By next morning they got to about every 6 minuted but then around noontime slowed back down to every 12 minutes but increased in intensity. The entire time I wanted to work through contractions on my hands and knees so that probably helped DS get into the right position. Contractions didnt actually become really awful until we were driving home from an appointment and were still only 10 minutes apart until my water broke at 4 pm. At that point we rushed to the hospital and he was born at 5:20 after a few kind of practice pushes (i was afraid to push with no epi) and one major push. I was on my hands and knees delivering too. It didnt feel like the back labor i had the first time but was the only position that i could do, if that makes sense.

Long story short, early labor was long but I think because I avoided the epi he was able to get into the right position and actual delivery was quick and intervention-free.

DS was posterior. It wasn't pretty - got an epidural because of the back labor being so intense, it didn't fully work, had to push flat on my back because of the angle he was at (kinda stuck in my pelvis, I guess?), pushed for three hours, he rotated at the last minute and came out kind of half and half posterior and anterior. 2nd degree tear, but I think that was from his shoulder slipping out too quickly.

How can you tell he is posterior? My MW says she can only tell if baby is head down, but that one posterior birth likely means another. Great...

I've heard cat/cow exercises help, though!

DD was posterior. I got my epidural and rested with a peanut shaped birthing ball between my legs. She turned as she moved down, and I only pushed for about 30 minutes. I was really worried since she was my first, but everything went smoothly. Good luck!

@grizz: I am on FB and would love to see that video. That sounds like something that could be very helpful. I had a doula for my last birth and a home birth midwife and they didn't really advise me on positions so I have been using a new midwife for this one and have been meaning to look up positions. We'll see how the birth goes without a doula! I will wall you my FB name. :)

DD was posterior. I was in labor for a long time. Induced because my water was leaking and i wasn't having contractions. I had a c section four days after I got to the hospital. DD was LGA and had major head molding despite being a csection baby.

My baby didn't turn, and my labor/delivery were awful BUT I was in a very, very small minority, and DS was crooked as well as posterior. My Bradley birth instructor says most posterior babies rotate to the correct position during labor, if not before! Are you on FB? @Heartonastring: sent me a great video on labor positions for posterior babies and I can send it to you. Its from a home birth!

My little gal has been stuck firmly posterior for the last few months and shows no promise of moving at 36 weeks despite visits to the chiro and being aware of my positioning. The midwife says she's not concerned yet... but I can't help but be!

If your baby was posterior when you went into labor/during labor, how did it go? Granted this is my second baby and I did have back labor with #1 (despite him being ROA) so I'm hoping I will be able to handle the situation better than if she were my first -- but I'm still nervous.

Tia!
