@Applesandbananas: I was told laser was the way to go because of the location of the tie?

DH and I discussed it last night and we're going to go ahead with it. Sucks that insurance won't pay, but if it will allow us a good chance to BF successfully I think it is worth it!

I had it clipped in elementary school to fix a speech problem and went back to school the next day. The results weren't immediate (there was lots of therapy), but that was the semester the kids finally stopped teasing me about how I talked. I absolutely wish it had been done earlier since the speech impediment marked me as a SPED kid and that was hard to shake until we were re-tracked in high-school.

@Mae: Our insurance should of covered it but they had a BS reason for not paying. We paid out of pocket and I don't regret it at all.

Do it, do it, do it!! We had Miss A's tongue and lip tie cut at 6 and 7 weeks and although it wasn't an instant fix, it definitely made a difference!

The procedure itself took less than five minutes and we nursed straight after and by bedtime that night, LO was back to her usual self.

@erinpye: I was going to say this too. I know a kid who had his clippped in elementary school because of a speech problem caused by it. Recovery was a lot harder on him than it would be for a baby.

With DS we had upper and lower frenula clipped at 5 days old. It didn't help much TBH. I wish we had followed up with cranialsacral therapy. However, I think what helped most of all was time. DS had a teeny tiny mouth and I think he just could not open up wide enough to get a good latch. Around 3.5 months things sorted themselves out (I think because his mouth was bigger by then) and we went on to successfully BF until 13 months.

Even if it doesn't fully fix the bf relationship (it usually will but takes time), it's so worth it for SO many reasons. Untreated ties can cause tooth decay, speech delay, speech impediments, excessive pickiness and food texture issues, on and on. I only regret we didn't treat DD1's sooner (she was 6 months old). We also went out of network, did laser, and paid full-price. It was worth every single penny. Also, if you didn't already know this, PTT is almost never seen without an upper lip tie, and you need to correct both to have a better bf experience. See Dr. Kotlow's website for more info and good luck!!! (www.kiddsteeth.com). Have 1-2 sessions of craniosachral therapy afterward- seriously! It helps SO much.

@Mae: we didn't have our lo's lasered and the outcome was still great. May I ask why laser vs traditional?

@hilsy85: Because the doctor is 1.5 hours away, he is out of network, which means even though it is "covered" we have to pay out of pocket because there is a separate out of network deductible (obviously we've reached our in network deductible!). There is an exception that can be made because we don't have any providers in our area, but we have to get pre-approval by insurance BEFORE the procedure but AFTER the diagnosis, and it takes several weeks to get the approval. So if we want them to pay we'd have to have the tongue tie officially diagnosed on Friday but not let them do the procedure, and then reschedule the procedure for several weeks from now when we get the approval. And if we're going to do it, I think it needs to be ASAP, not waiting weeks on insurance. So we'll just have to pay :(

Lo's was clipped around 2 months and the ENT warned me that it would not be an immediate, instantaneous fix. It took us an additional few weeks to really get all our issues resolved (which weren't 100% related to the tongue tie).

However, my friend's LO has struggled with speech due to having a severe tongue tie and if she could go back as have it revised sooner, she would!

My ENT described the pain as similar to having your ears pierced. Uncomfortable, but over in a second. LO nursed immediately after and was fine in 1-2 minutes.

I felt really guilty prior to the procedure, but afterward, no regrets. LO is 14m and still nursing.

You alresdy know my story, but we successfully breastfed til 18.5 months after Los posterior tt was clipped.

I know people who have nursed in spite of a tongue tie, but if you're already having issues, it seems like getting it clipped would be the best thing! I am shocked your insurance won't cover it...do they not cover specialist visits or something?

I wish we'd done it sooner (she was 5 weeks and a couple days). Things started to improve right away but it took about 2 weeks after the procedure for it to be fully improved.

We were successful after having it clipped! We had the tongue tie done first, and then an upper lip tie correction a few weeks later. Zero regrets. The procedure took less than 5 seconds each time.

No experience myself, but a friend of mine waited until her son was about a year to get it done, and wished she had it done sooner. For her second, she had it done almost right away.

I had all the same concerns as you. LO was 6 wks old when I finally did it and I wish I had of done it sooner. She handled the procedure beautifully and we had no issues BF after. I hope the same for you!

If you've been following along my ridiculous number of posts of my BF issues you'll know that I'm probably having my LO's (suspected) posterior tongue tie clipped soon.

But I just found out insurance won't cover it at all, and adding this to my LC's general statement regarding how this only MAY solve the problem and my feeling badly about putting my LO through a medical procedure like this... I'm starting to wonder if this is even worth it or if I should just give up on BF already.

If your LO had a posterior tongue tie, did getting it clipped fix your BF issues? How old was your LO when you had it done?
