I had this to some degree. I drove myself to emerg on day 3/4 in the evening after having had a c section because of the swelling in my legs and feet. I was really freaking myself put. The doctor came in and basically laughed at me and she told me it would go away. It did after a week and a half and me knocking back a lot of water. I also was in and out of clinics and emerg for a few days because I had a post up infection that developed and am glad I kept going back because I got antibiotics and then started feeling a lot better.

I always worry about medical stuff for myself and other people and I find it's better to just go see or talk to a doctor or nurse as soon as you can (over using google) so that you can clear your head and get on with life. In Canada we have telegraphy where you can call and speak to a nurse and they can advise you whether or not you should go see a doctor or go to the hospital. I have used that a few times.

It's definitely normal to worry about stuff going on with you or baby. I agree with pp, that it helps a lot to be able to speak to someone or go somewhere (like here) to ask questions and vent.

I started taking St. John's Wort. It helped a lot. Some people don't like to take supplements while nursing, but I did some research and felt it was a good choice for me.

I had terrible post-partum anxiety and convinced myself I would never sleep again. It was awful.. Looking back at it from a good place now, I wish I had talked to someone - so I would say don't hesitate to find someone to let the anxiety out! Just being able to voice it and have someone tell you aren't crazy can be a relief.

@Paddington10: I have had anxiety issues and health is a definite trigger for me so I can relate and it was something that I was prepared for after the birth of my son.

My advice is to avoid googling health issues like the the plague - I know how tough and tempting it is when you are looking for reassurance, but when you are about to click on the link ask yourself "What am I hoping to get from this?" - rarely does the internet offer reassurance or comfort as we know!

As the ladies above mentioned, talk to your Dr about it if it is continuing and have confidence in yourself - you would know if something was wrong and you are in a place with good health care so you are as safe as you can be and then try to let it go and focus on something else. I know that this is so hard, but try to reassure yourself before you start spiraling because I know how hard it is to see reason in a downward spiral!

I have also found meditation to be useful and I am deeply not a woowoo person, but even 5 minutes a day can gradually put things in perspective. Hope this helps and remember, you won't always feel this way

@Paddington10: I've been there--it's so tough. Have you had anxiety about your health before? I tend to struggle with that and after having a baby it felt so much worse because I felt like my baby was depending on me to be well. Eventually, seeing a counselor helped me to be able to not go down the anxious spiral every time a symptom popped up. I was able (on a good day) to notice the symptom and accept it but then let it go and focus on other things without it derailing me. Also agree that it may even out a bit soon when your hormones are less crazy.

I would agree that it sounds as if you're having some postpartum anxiety. I have general anxiety, and some of the best coping skills are deep breathing and trying to focus elsewhere. It's SO HARD to do, but the obsessive behavior can overtake your mind. If it continues or gets worse over the next week or two, call your doc. I didn't call and suffered through a year of fearing that I would lose my children in a horrific accident. I'm now getting the help I need.

Post partum anxiety. It's probably hormonal and hopefully will subside as your hormones level off. Call your OB or a therapist or psychiatrist if it's interfering with your daily life and lasts longer than a few weeks.

Hello,
I just had my son on Friday and got home from the hospital yesterday. I should be happy, but suddenly I am becoming very anxious about every post-partum symptom I'm having. I am super-vigilant about swelling (I'm convinced my legs look swollen even though my husband says they aren't), blood clots, et cetera. I am wondering if any of you ladies dealt with this and how to keep things in check. It's almost like my body can't deal with the enormity of having new baby so I am fixating elsewhere. I keep envisioning having a blood clot that travels to my lungs. Of course I read a story about this before leaving the hospital, completely accidentally - it popped up on a FB feed. :( Can anyone offer suggestions or advice? Also have any of you ever had a blood clot? I figure I would know if I had one...I called my nurse who basically said I didn't need to worry unless it was very painful, red, swollen, and hot. I wish I could just take her at her word but my anxiety is going nuts. Sorry for the rambling post. :(
