My friend told me about seaweed soup and I actually like eating it so i still make it every once in a while.
The chinese believe that 'you are what you eat'. The papaya/fish soup comes out very milky looking, which is why they think it helps with milk production. At least that's what my parents tell me. it's actually quite tasty as well. but it's much easier to make the seaweed soup. I ate the ginger/chicken soup as well. my mom didn't put much ginger in it at all because it made my baby's jaundice worse. so it just tasted like chicken stock which I didn't mind. but she did put a lot of alcohol in it - had to tell her to cut that back as well.

Oh no, I didn't know pigs feet was a postpartum food - I've been prepping myself to eat tons of seaweed soup, and that's bad enough! I mean, I like seaweed soup on my birthday but I don't know about having it for 30 days straight.
Speaking of which, did anyone else's parents force them to drink gross concoctions when they were growing up (hanyak)??? Blegh!

@autumnlove: The pig's feet totally helped with my milk production! I ate it for 2 days and I noticed an increase in my milk. A few months later, it started dipping again and I ate pig's feet and it went up. I don't know if it's a coincidence or what....but it worked for me! I got that tip from another korean mommy friend and she swore it worked for her too. LOL

Korean mom made pigs feet seaweed soup, and oxtail soup; Chinese MIL made brown chicken soup. I'm not sure if any of those worked, but the mothers' milk tea (not to be confused with boba) definitely did!

My mom will be making that ginger chicken soup for me too! I told her please not make it too strong and not add alcohol, otherwise I won't eat it. She also made the traditional pigs feet and ginger in black vinegar - it tastes pretty good but I can't imagine eating it for days in a row though. Due any day now so I have to psych myself out for the food that I'll have to eat!!!

@Rubies: That crazy ginger chicken thing is currently marinating in my mom's fridge right now (sans chicken). Something about ginger is suppose to keep you warm? I told my mom I'll try it and see if I like it or not. I'll let you know in a few weeks how it tastes!

My MIL (Chinese) made some crazy ginger chicken thing but it was almost 100% ginger. I didn't eat it. My husband tried to (he felt bad) but even he almost choked at the intensity of the ginger.

i've heard of the seaweed soup, and someone today was just telling me about pigs' feet boiled in water with some ginger and orange rind, and peanuts. apparently the broth is supposed to help with milk production. i think it sounds fascinating--maybe something about the calcium/nutrients in the bones?
