@Kimberlybee: @Mamaof2: @MrsRcCar: @hummusgirl: Thanks for thinking of us! We waited and waited to make a call on Saturday morning because I am indecisive. The storm was not nearly as bad as predicted but it there was still some flooding. It didn't help that we all overslept. LO is usually my alarm clock but all the excitement of visiting family members wore her out! Before we could make a decision, we heard from a few folks that they didn't feel safe going out. So, like an hour before the party we decided to cancel it.

But! Someone didn't get the memo, and actually got there before the party was supposed to start. When I found out, I felt so horrible that we decided to go up there anyway and have a little playdate. The whole thing was kind of stressful and awkward. LO had a great day though and her whole birthday week has been a lot of fun. I felt a bit like a "mom fail." I need to be a more decisive person!

We are still having a "make up day" because I really want to take LO to the park where the cool train is. Of course, it is supposed to rain on our make up day too! And, another mom in our play group already has a birthday party planned that weekend. But, I'm not going to let myself get worked up over it again. We'll just go forward and do the rain location again if needed and if it's just us, oh, well, we'll have fun.

I can't say this whole thing didn't make me even more homesick. Last year when we had LO's birthday at my parents' house when we still lived in my hometown, we had 50 people even though it was a yucky day and it was so fun and natural.

@daniellemybelle: Curious to hear what you decided. We're in Austin too and had a wedding Friday night in New Braunfels that we almost didn't attend because I was so freaked out by driving through a "flood watch." In the end, we went and it was barely raining at all. It's really hard to know what to do in these situations - oftentimes it's these big apocalyptic predictions that turn out to be no big deal, but then sometimes (like in May) there's actual deadly flooding that some people didn't take seriously enough. Of course today is beautiful! Argh.

@Thenetexan: @travellingbee: We're in Austin. They keep changing it but as of now (nearly 1 AM!) they are saying the worst of it is supposed to be tomorrow morning. Awesome.

So far, we are technically still on. DH is pretty skeptical. I am majorly waffling. Our already small group seems to be dwindling a bit but I've also had two moms tell us they are still coming... and one of those moms is still planning to have her daughter's birthday party tomorrow afternoon.

Stay tuned as my LO's birthday world turns...

Not sure exactly where you are in Texas, but tomorrow am in Houston looks better now than it did when I looked at the weather this am. It would help to talk to someone local about which streets, intersections, interstates flood. We usually know the routes to avoid. If the party were in Houston tomorrow am, I would definitely attend based on current forecast.

Thanks, everyone. @BabyBoecksMom: @Mamaof2: @gracecat: @T.H.O.U.: @TrailRunner: @regberadaisy: @Pumuckl: @lamariniere

Yes, we are in TX. Yesterday the news said it was a 90% of thunderstorms and heavy rain all day today and so far it is just drizzling. So who knows if we will get the worst of it.

I did already post in the Facebook group yesterday that we will be having it at the mall contingent on the weather. The post got 5 likes, haha. Not sure what that means! I've talked to two moms who said they do still plan to come as of now, though.

I totally get what several of you have said about just letting people feel free to make their own decision. But I'm afraid that will mean almost no guests. I guess LO wouldn't really care but I am wondering if it would be better to reschedule to a day more friends can make it if that is going to be the case, you know? We would still have a small family party at home this weekend.

But I would hate to call it off and then it really be fine and we missed the chance to celebrate... And who knows if rescheduling will work out.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: We already have daytime plans on Halloween as does pretty much everyone else I know.

@BandDmommy: The party is at 10 which is when the mall opens so I think it will be okay though obviously not my first choice.

@daniellemybelle: Are you in TX? If it's outdoors, I would postpone or try to move it indoors (at your house?). Most likely, most people won't come if it's going to be as bad as they are predicting, so it might be better to wait or cancel.

I'd take LO to the mall and let her play with the train and then have the party on Halloween. It's a day time party, so I don't see this conflicting with Halloween fun.

@daniellemybelle: just a thought, if you are having at a mall and it's raining. Sounds like mall might be a madhouse. I know our mall can be pretty crazy on weekends, especially in inclement weather:

Ugh that sucks, I'm so sorry!! What a dilemma... Where are you exactly? I'm from So Cal (not living there now though) and if they are freaking out about rain, I would still have the birthday party. Other places, I'm not sure though. Is it possible to make DH's parents and DD happy by having a little mini party on the same day so as to reduce the disappointment level? Tough call, but I would lean towards keeping the party at the mall.

I think you should try to make the decision today. If you feel safe getting to the mall, then I would hold it and let them decide. they may appreciate a fun indoor activity on a rainy weekend. Maybe note in the message, "We are still having the party at the mall, please travel safely and if you can't make it we totally understand".

I would still have if as long as you feel comfortable driving in it, but I would offer guests the option to choose to go based on their own comfort level. That way they don't feel obligated to go just bc they RSVP'd if they aren't comfortable driving in the conditions.

I would keep the mall location and go on as planned! It would have to be a monsoon for me to not go to a party I already RSVP'd to. I live in upstate nY and if we didn't go every time there is bad weather we'll be stuck indoors all winter.

@daniellemybelle: I think you'll just have to call it and hope for the best! Even if you do go for the indoor location and it doesn't end up raining, your DD will still have fun!

We were recently invited to a zoo birthday party and the weather was calling for rain. I texted the mom (I barely know her) and asked her if there was a plan B. She said they were still planning on the zoo, but there was also an indoor option if it was pouring. The weather ended up cooperating, so everything was fine.

@lamariniere: @Pumuckl: I've already posted in the FB group our new location and that I will update on Saturday morning whether we are truly a go.

I am just having a hard time knowing how to even make that call on Saturday morning! What some folks think is okay to go out in, others don't. What is "manageable" rain?

We are very new to town so our guests aren't close friends. If they were, I would just ask them on Saturday morning what they think. In this case, I feel like we risk it becoming belabored and awkward if we try to poll everyone, so it would be better to just make a call.

If people's cars are floating away, obviously call it off. If it's just drizzling, keep it on. But I am expecting it to be somewhere in between and I don't know how to decide.

We were supposed to have a small birthday party/playdate at a park with a miniature train Saturday. She's all about Thomas and trains so that was the theme complete with train conductor outfit.

Well, it's going to be thunderstorming with record rainfall. Awesome! Our current plan is to move the party to an indoor mall with a little train so we can keep the theme.

However, DH & I are wondering if it is even a good idea to try to still do the party. They are acting like the apocalypse is coming on the local news, but we haven't lived here long enough to know how seriously to take it. If there is flooding and it's dangerous to drive, I would hate to make folks (new friends/acquaintances for the most part) feel obligated to drive their LOs in that. And I would also hate for no one to show up.

If we reschedule, it would have to be two weeks from now because next weekend is Halloween. Not the end of the world, but LO totally understood it was her birthday today and I kind of hate to wait that long. Not to mention, who knows what the weather will be like then? And if anyone could come? DH's parents are in town this weekend and I know they will be sad if her party is called off.

What would you do? Obviously we are going to see how it develops tomorrow and Saturday morning but I am still not sure what the deciding factor should be. I asked one friend who is planning to come and she said they would definitely still come and they don't mind driving in rain. But they are also transplants from the North!
