Both the hitting and car ride would be deal breakers for me. That's way too long in the car each day and most 4 year old's I know have learned not to hit babies.

I would say no, too. In fact I drop LO off a little later than I would like and altered my work schedule just so she doesn't have to be driven the 15 minutes total that her daycare nanny takes to get her 8yr old to school around the corner. I just prefer to avoid extra time in a car if possible, and especially with someone other than me or DH driving.

No way - 3 hours a day in a car is way too much for me. I would keep looking.

I probably wouldnt do it. I say this as Im a nanny and my first year I brought my son to work with me. My kids had a lot of activities so my son ended up in the car a lot and I didnt like it that I ended up finding childcare for him just so he wouldnt have to end up that way. I could have kept him with me but I just felt it wasnt good for him or his head to be laying around in a carseat all day even if he was with me.

The 3 hours in the car is a lot, and honestly if she has two kids and one with autism that needs therapy and to go to school, plus care for your LO....how much attention would your LO really get, honestly?

Not only is it three hours in the car (yuck!) but that is three hours more a day that your LO could be in a car accident..... that doesn't sound like a good fit to me.

I wouldn't be comfortable with it, only due to the 3 hours a day in a car. I just don't think that is fair for her.

The driving in the car was what did my in home daycare provider in. Ultimately I never know how often or long my son was driving around town. As soon as he turned two, DH and I put him in a licensed center. More expensive, but for my sanity, worth every penny.

The autism part doesn't worry me - in fact, I think it would be awesome for your kid to be exposed to kids that are "different". But the car ride is a deal-breaker. *I* don't even want to be in a car that much.

Just say no, I think. I've found that providers with experience in PDD/ autism are phenomenal. (our nanny has this experience)... But I'm most worried about 3 hours in the car. Your baby doesn't need that exposure to traffic, pollution, or (I cringe when I say this based on the extra extra today) lack of stimulation,

Three hours in the car is a lot. My LO can barely handle an hour total. I wouldn't do it just b/c of that issue...

I have to agree, the 4 year old I nanny definitely wouldn't be trying to wake the baby up. I also wouldn't be totally thrilled with the 3 hours in the car :(

I think the fact that her son has autism wouldn't be a factor in my decision (some parents are incredible with their children and can handle any potential behaviours, others cannot handle these at all). For me, the only concern would be the sheer amount of travel. Three hours in a carseat daily wouldn't be child care that I would pay for at all. That's a lot of time spent just hanging out in the car.

I definitely would not want my LO being in a car for 3 hours a day, that seems like a lot of time to me. That alone would probably dissuade me from having her watch my child.

I personally wouldn't be comfortable with LO being a car/carseat for 3 hours a day to be honest! I'm sure she could navigate her son's behavior with your baby but that is a really long time every single day.

First of all, that's not typical 4 year old behavior to try and hit a baby to wake it up. My son would have never done that. That might have been typical of his autism.

As for being in the car...that's a lot. I know you don't have a lot of options, but maybe keep looking before you commit to this lady?

My LO is in daycare two days a week, which has made it really tricky to find the right provider. Where she is now is OK, not perfect, so I'm still looking for the right fit.

A coworker referred me to a SAHM who has a degree in early childhood development, is a former preschool teacher, and has taken all the classes to be a licensed daycare. Sounds perfect, right?

Well, she has two sons, one 4 and one 2. The 4 year old has autism - but this alone doesn't make me hesitate. (Although the whole 30 mins I was over there and LO was sleeping in her carseat he kept trying to hit her and wake her up, but I would expect that of any 4 year old). The problem is she has to drive him to both therapy and "school" everyday. So my LO would be in the car with her for about 3 hours of each day. I just don't know how I feel about that. I'm struggling because on the one hand I think this woman would take better care of LO but yet 3 hours a day in the car... oooof. What would you do?
