We only had 1 accident in K. But it was due to the teacher telling the kids they could not use the bathroom during story/circle time. Since they had bathroom time right before this time I guess she thought it was not a " real" request? IDK but it was a quick convo of if DD asks you to go, it isn't so much asking as it is telling you where she is goin to go.

Mine had two accidents and she has had maybe like 3 accidents since being potty trained! The 1st time was on the 1st day; she said she just didn't want to ask to go & waited too long. The 2nd time happened a few days after, she said she was at the gym and also didn't know to ask. We've been okay since. I think it helps to find out WHY the had an accident - shy/don't want to ask issue? Too busy? Etc. I'd also talk to the teacher to see if they can help come up with a plan.

@JennyPenny: I just wanted to say DD had more potty accidents in K than in preschool. Probably 8 or so throughout the year compared to 1? in her last year of preschool. I think she was busier and more responsible for monitoring her bodily functions. Plus who wants to waste recess time on going potty?

After school care has to keep the bathrooms on our campus locked so it takes a lot of forethought to find a care provider, get them to stop what they are doing, round of a group of kids and the key, and walk quite a distance to the bathroom. Oddly DD seemed to have no problem with after school care despite those hurdles.

My LO struggled with this too in kindergarten. We ruled out a UTI first and then worked on the behavior. It was a combo of tons of new things and learning to listen to body and manage time (go potty before recess even if you don't feel a strong urge to go yet)

@nana87: ugh, I sure hope not. But he’s not showing any shame or remorse which I would expect if they were real accidents so that may be a part...

Could it be liking the extra attention he gets when He has an accident? Lo1 just started k too and had a period this summer at day care where every single day she was having an accident like 10-15 mins into nap time. I’m pretty sure it was about liking the extra individual attention she was getting, because it stopped when they added an extra bathroom trip into her routine. One of the biggest differences for us between pre-K and k has been the teacher ratio

@gotkimchi: @lindseykaye: thanks! Talking to the teacher is definitely the obvious solution. I guess it didn’t occur to me because we haven’t really had any communication. I’m so used to preschool where I can touch base at drop off or pick up. But I guess I need to send an email or something.

When my DD started kindergarten she had a handful of potty accidents when she had almost never had them after potty training. It was really because she was so engrossed in play or the activity - moving from one activity to the next - that she would just forget to go or not be focused enough to listen to her body. I would talk to the teacher to see what they noticed and if this might be contributing.
They may be able to help you with giving your child (or the class) routine reminders, or give your child some extra attention in this area while he transitions.

My DS1 started Kindergarten a few weeks ago and has basically had an accident every other day for the past 2 weeks. In preschool he was basically accident free. I keep telling him he needs to go more often and he insists he goes plenty, which is clearly incorrect. It sounds like the issue *might* be having to ask the teacher but he’s also denied that since he first brought it up. Has anyone else been through anything similar? Any strategies that worked?
