@pachamama: J likes to poop outside like a doggie. My neighbors are not amused, but I am :-).

I'm not sure if the potty is above board in VA, but I think it is amazing. There are like 7 potty training toddlers, so it's necessary.

@pachamama: This is my kids favorite unfortunately. Like it’s the coolest thing. So gross. They also pee outside basically all summer in the woods (and yes, they’re girls). I’m just excited they’re not doing it in a diaper and that they’re not tracking their dirty selves inside before bathtime. .

also FWIW, my husband took him on a little hike this morning and he pooped IN THE WOODS. Like what 2 year old does that?! (We had dog poop bags and some wipes so we didn't leave a trace of poop). He told my husband, "me poop now!" and out it came!

@Becky: No kidding! Hmm! We are in the Cap Region. We are at a in-home daycare, maybe that's why? Or I might have misheard her b/c I remember asking to use a little potty bc I thought he was afraid of the big one .. but I don't think he's scared of the big potty.
@beatrixkiddo: Thanks girl. She just said "he's pretty young" but she has a snippy comment about EVERYTHING (short sleeves? It's kinda cold today) so I think she's on board (just rude lol). They usually are only outside, some dribbles when he's playing or watching an awesome episode of Blippi.
@Becky: Yeah I need to teach him a phrase to tell his sitter (someone else mentioned this too). I have him practice saying, "Trudi, me potty now" and he smiles and nods and says he'll do it lol.

oh actually, he didn't have an accident yesterday and it was Monday which is when he pees the most

@pachamama: are you in NY City? The daycares where I am in WNY use little potty seats, especially if potty training in a room that doesn’t have an attached bathroom with a small potty.

I would push back on any indication that he's too young to potty train. He has clearly shown you that he's ready. He has the body control. How does he do telling the day care providers that he has to pee when they are playing inside? Are his accidents only outside? Putting aside the FOMO factor, its going to be an adjustment getting him to be comfortable telling another adult that is not you or C that he has to pee. He'll get there. I'd be really reluctant to take a step backwards when you've had SO much consistent success yourself. I sent T to playgroup this morning without a diaper for the first time. Fully expecting a pee accident but so be it.

So we’re on the young side too, and we have one day care teacher who thinks this is a problem, and she basically complained to me about it yesterday, and also put her in a pull-up after just one accident (DD1 just moved up from ge 1-2 year old room and this teacher was from that room and doesn’t really do potty training). Accidents outside are totally normal, and the regular teacher is so understanding. They’re having so much fun they just get distracted. Our regular daycare teachers don’t think anything of it. This might sound crazy but what worked both times with us was creating a novelty out of going potty in a certain setting, and then this eventually turned into telling us they had to go potty in that setting. At the playground down the road (this is the “crazy” part) there isn’t a bathroom since it’s at a school, so we take her around the side to pop a squat (don’t worry—I’m not the only ones). She’s started telling us now that she has to go potty there vs us asking over and over. Maybe this could translate for at school too (not having him do it there, but having him learn it)?

@Pollywog: in NY they have crazy rules - no potties or little training seat tops are even allowed inside so I can't imagine outside.
@raspberries: I agree, I don't think he wants to miss out. I've told him "at daycare they will wait for you, they will hold your spot!", etc, but I don't think he really gets it yet. Maybe because he's so young?
@DesertDreams88: they take him out right before and during and after But my son seems to be stubborn- I think peeing has to be on his terms. Often he just sits on the toilet and doesn't pee unless he really has to go. Again, he can hold it for a really long time!

Can they put a potty outside? That's what J's daycare does and it really, really helps. So much so that I have a similar potty on my deck I haven't asked how handwashing works outside, because I'm just thrilled not to have had a poop accident in weeks.

We potty trained at 26 months and went through something similar - when he had to pee, he'd wait until the last minute at daycare and if they didn't drop everything and take him right that second, he'd have an accident. I think a lot of it is fear of missing out - we basically had to condition him to realize that if he stopped playing, he'd still be able to pick up right where he left off when he got back.

We taught him a phrase ("Please take me to the potty") and made a game out of it - if anyone in the family said that phrase, we'd all stop what we were doing and wait for the person who said it to come back from the bathroom. There was also a lot of verbalizing to toys or whatever we were doing - something along the lines of "Hold on, fire truck, K has to go the potty so wait here and we'll be right back after he goes." And we told daycare what we were doing as well. It worked out great (or he just got better at holding it, haha) - he's just shy of 3 now and hasn't had an accident in months.

I think he will learn eventually but it may be awhile. My son was a lot older when he potty trained (3.5) and it took almost a year for him to just go when he needed to go. Even now at 6 he will wait until it becomes urgent and go running to the bathroom.

Is there enough staff in order to take him inside mid play-session for a quick potty break?

Can you ask them to make sure to take him to the potty right before going outside?

My son has been doing surprisingly well with potty training. At 25 months we hit that sweet spot and did bootcamp... he decided to poop and pee (and tell us when he had to) on the potty and very rarely has accidents- with us. He stays dry through most naps and 10 hours at night. He has only had one poop accident (he was home, playing outside).

I'm pretty sure this is normal but wondering what you think... he still has accidents only at daycare and almost always when he's outside. Only pee. He seems to be comfortable peeing with the kids in their bathroom and his main babysitter said he will pee no problem but will never *tell* them when he has to go- they put him on the potty every hour or so but the kid literally holds his pee 3+ hours during the day so I do think it's frequent enough visits. He LOVES being outdoors and I think he just won't tell his sitters he has to go.
Do you think he will eventually learn to break from playing and pee at daycare or it it normal to have accidents for a month+? The owner hinted that he "was too young to potty train" and I have a feeling they're getting a little frustrated (though it's very small amounts of pee...)
