@Foodnerd81: Awesome to hear! I will try and be more patient and give it time. Glad you are through and that there is possibly light at the end of the tunnel.

@Suzanne44: awesome, actually! That phase lasted a little while- I honestly cannot remember how long, but once she got over the initial novelty it calmed down a lot. Now she can go longer than me without using the bathroom and I don't even have to remind her unless we are leaving the house. Hopefully it's a short lived phase for you too, because it was exhausting!

@Bluebonnet: yes definitely when she has to poop is when she is up and down on it constantly. At that point I try to get her to stay on until she poops. If I give her a video on the iPod she stays on forever but cries when I take it away. Fun times.

@Foodnerd81: we just potty trained LO2 a couple of weeks, so this is fresh on my mind. I read in a potty training book, that when kids are constipated/need to poop, there is more pressure on their bladder, so part of why LO is initiating to go a lot may be because she has to poop.

My LO does great initiating when she needs to pee, but she's not as comfortable pooping in the potty (she does it, but she has been a bit constipated since potty training and is mildly traumatized every time she needs to poop). I know she'll need to poop when she says she has to go potty every 5 minutes. I mentioned this to a friend and she said its pretty typical.

I would say the first 5 days or so, we spent most of our waking time hanging out in the bathroom. It got a little better after that, but he still wanted to sit for a long time. It was probably a week or so before he was in the bathroom significantly less.

Pretty much right after I typed this post she went about an hour without going, because she was distracted and had my attention because the baby was napping. But when she has to poop but can't there is a ton of back and forth still.

@ShootingStar: yes I know this is the better problem to have! It's more that I'm wondering how long it will last. But sounds like it isn't a super common problem to have anyway.

I think I will get a potette for park and car emergencies, especially since I saw it also works as a seat reducer on a regular toilet.

DS definitely went more at first, but was able to hold it longer when we were out because he was distracted. I would make him go right before we left and when we got somewhere. For the park I'd just make sure to have a change of clothes and we did keep a little potty in the car for a while.

Now (4 months in) he does better out of the house than home! We still have accidents when he is trying to wait too long, out when he chugs a bunch of milk.

I know it's annoying, but it's awesome that she's initiating going. We have to prompt DS most of the time to go, it's rare that he volunteers it. We did have a short period where he was asking to go potty and then again 5 minutes later. I would ask him if he had to go, or if he wanted a treat. He usually said he wanted a treat, lol. It was tough to find the balance of discouraging that and to keep encouraging him to initiate it.

@delight: after I posted this, she has actually gone quite a while without peeing. It's definitely for attention more than anything else (story of my life since before the baby was born). And the novelty, and the candy. So I think if she has attention on her and is distracted we will be fine at the playground.

@Foodnerd81: With DD we never experienced running to the bathroom so frequently. It could be because we potty trained over a long period and not the 3 day method. Maybe for your DD it is just so novel and exciting still so she is wanting to do it more frequently? I would just keep emphasizing that we want to empty everything out each time we go. Maybe have her watch you and see how you do a big pee and not just a bunch of little pees?

I did want to comment about the playground. We always make sure to try and go potty whenever we leave the house and as soon as we go home. So when we walk to the playground, most of the time she won't need to go. A couple of times she has had to and I just hide her behind a tree. It is pretty awkward but what can you do? I try to hide her as best as I can. I do find that in order to make sure she doesn't pee all over everything, we have to take her leg out of at least one of her pant legs. We haven't mastered squatting yet. We've had to pee like this in parking lots and the side of the road too but she won't wear pull ups unless it's nap/night so I'm happy to help her pee in public places. We just do our best to hide her!

i would make DD1 go to the bathroom before we left for somewhere and again right when we got there (if there were bathrooms, like at gymnastics or the library). if somewhere like the park, we would go before, and then i had a little potette that i kept in the car. it still comes in handy if we need an emergency stop somewhere without a bathroom...and it was great to even take on hikes before she learned to just squat.

Mine does the every 5 minute thing occasionally and I go with it. I think she's learning the sensation and trying to figure out her body, so I let her be and keep encouraging her. I think over time she'll figure out she can hold it and start telling the difference between needing to go and smaller sensations.

I bought a travel potty to have in the car (this one: http://www.amazon.com/Kalencom-2-in-1-Potette-Plus-Blue/dp/B0016L0MMS?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00). We don't go too far away from home generally speaking, but since she's very new to this whole thing, I want to have something nearby if we go to a playground or somewhere without easy facilities. It's a bit of a drag (literally) but I want to keep encouraging her to go when she needs to while she's so new to this.

@Anagram: the good thing about going so frequently is it's not like a super urgent super fast kind of thing when she has to go I guess. And we've gone out places where there are bathrooms (dance class, she told the teacher she had to go and I came and brought her, her gym class again she told them and they took her). But the park is at least five minutes from us plus time to get up the stairs- I guess I will learn as we go.

Also I am totally sure the constant peeing is about attention too- if she can squeeze a few drops out she gets praise and attention, when we have a new baby she has to share attention with usually. For example, I just said I'm going to help the baby get to sleep and she said I have to go potty.

eta: I stuck close to home meaning no super long trips--but we still went to the park, grocery store (we walk to it), etc. I put a puppy pad in the stroller as a liner and the couple of times she had accidents we just went directly home and changed. I guess I mean, close to home being a 5-10 minutes walk, not literally at home. I know you are in the same position as us, urban living and can't be stuck inside all day.

LO1 wasn't every 5 minutes, but for a few weeks she definitely had little to no lead time on telling she had to pee. We had to get her to a potty within about 1 minute or she would have an accident. So one of those travel potties could have been good for that.

Instead, I just stuck close to home for those weeks and in retrospect it was a very short time. Now as long as we pee before we leave, she's good to go for a few hours.

We never dealt with the every 5 mins thing, but I would say it's actually probably a good thing and as the novelty wears off it will get better.

As for the playground, she goes before we leave and can usually hold it until we get home again. I do have My Carry Potty and it has been a lifesaver for the few times when she's had to go asap, like the park. I like that it has a leakproof seal so nothing gross is going to get on my stroller basket lol.

We did the 3 day method of potty training this weekend and C (2.75 years) took to it like a champ. Just a few pees in the living room first thing before she recognized when she had to go, and one unfortunate poop Sunday morning (sorry kitchen floor). A tiny accident Monday afternoon while I was getting the baby to sleep (I think she forgot to pull her underwear down actually) and NO accidents yesterday!

But, she is in and out of the bathroom constantly. Like 4 times an hour or even more sometimes. She will pee just a little bit, or one tiny poop, say I'm done! I try to get her to stay longer but it doesn't do much, and the only way she will really stay longer is if I let her watch a video on the iPod, but then she has a tantrum when I take t away. So that's fun.

Overall in really pleased with how well it's gone, just wondering how long I can expect it to be an every ten minutes thing? Also we did M&Ms as rewards so in sure that's part of it. It's so new I won't phase them out yet, but when she goes while we are away from home I do make her wait until we get home for the candy. (Don't worry, she doesn't forget).

Also, especially girl mamas, what do you do at a playground with no bathroom? Run home? Squat? Bring a travel potty? My friends son just stands behind a tree and pees. I have the little bjorn potty (the smaller version) that would prob fit in the stroller but I'm thinking I might just return it (still in packaging unused right now).
