I think in the beginning stages, the stand alone seat is better because you can put it in a central place where its easy for them to get to. It also gives them a visual of the "fruits of their labor" since they can actually see their pee/poo in the seat. I like that the little seat encourages her to go on her own without needing my help. We started with the a basic potty when Miss A started showing an interest at 16 months, it's also really handy if I'm using the toilet because she can manage it without my help. We have an insert to go on the toilet but it's quite wobbly and LO can't get up there on her own. My plan is to try that first and to try to skip the potty. I don't feel like cleaning it out, plus I'm hoping that the potty ring will make it easier to transition her to a regular toilet seat later on and that it will make it easier when we are away from the house.
