Thanks, everybody, for the reassurance! We talked to him this morning about listening to his body and re-introduced a chocolate chip reward system for trying, and I picked him up today in the same pants I dropped him off in, hooray! (I also picked him up 2 hours early, covered in blood, and with a split lip that now has a stitch in it, but that’s a different story. If it’s not one thing it’s another with kids!)

We had a week where we had several accidents. There was a lot going on that week, with people visiting and parties and while DD is very social and loves going places and being around tons of people she seemed to be stressed by all the action at that particular time.

Being distracted by something more exciting is definitely our biggest challenge. DD very rarely has accidents (or at least I think it’s rare—I’d say 8-10 this year and some were running water-induced; she’s newly 4 and has been potty trained since almost 2).

@erinbaderin: we had a lot of accidents in preschool (he was 4), he would just be too busy playing to go to the bathroom. Then he would t make it in time because he waited too long. Our pediatrician said it is normal and should lessen with time (and maturity!). He is going to be 6 in March and does a much better job of going when he needs to but occasionally he does wait too long and then has to run.

@Ocean girl: @Finfan: I don’t think so - he poops daily, so I’m assuming that’s not the issue.

Not so much for overnight, but we have had bouts of accidents because my girl was just distracted or didn’t want to stop what she was doing, or was being stubborn and refusing to go even though I could see the pee pee dance and asked her to try. Then she gets really upset if she pees in her undies. She’s literally peed, emptying her full bladder, standing on the stool in front of the toilet because she just was one second too late.

No advice. I think it’s more of a power struggle plus distraction. It’s gotten much better again though. Now when I ask if she has to go and she says no, I ask her to pay atttention to her body and think hard about if she needs to go. A lot of times she will say no, but then a minute later go and be fine.

My son turns four in January, and has been potty trained for almost a year, but suddenly he’s been having accidents - he’s peed his pants three of the last four days. He’s also woken up the last two nights with a wet pull-up, which is unusual (and this is despite also getting up at least once a night to pee). Most of the times we can see that he needs to pee, he’s doing a dance, but he insists that he doesn’t. One of the times he was actually in the bathroom, but he was goofing around with the fan.

Part of me thinks he just suddenly doesn’t want to stop what he’s doing to pee but the peeing multiple times in the night has me a bit concerned - is there something going on? I would guess some kind of bladder infection but he doesn’t have any sign of illness. This is the most accidents he’s ever had, even when he was just newly in underpants.
