@LindsayLou: This is encouraging. I have a 21 month old and he's showing signs that he wants to use the potty, but hasn't actually gone yet. There's a little girl in his class that is totally potty trained already, and I feel a little behind.

DS1 didn't potty train until 3 years, 3 months. We tried sooner than that, but we hit a stalemate when he refused to sit on the potty and screamed bloody murder if we tried to force him. So we quit and tried again with major explanation.

DS2 is telling us that he's going poo, and is asking us to go sit on the potty. We're just using a potty seat on top of the regular potty. We didn't use a small potty for DS1 and don't plan on it for DS2.

@KayKay: I'm not super eager to start but I don't want to miss his moment of interest. It does look like there are some moms who just went with the flow and it worked out. Potty training seems the most daunting to me out of all the partnering struggles!

DD2 will be 19 months next week, and she asks to sit on the potty but has never actually gone. I think she sees her sister doing it and wants to be like her. However, I'm in no rush to potty train her- public bathrooms with a toddler are the worst. I'll happily change diapers in the car until she's ready.

Sounds like he might be ready, even though it's on the early side! I tend to wait until they can be a bit more independent (pants up and/or down on their own), but do whatever you feel is right for him and your family!

@justjules: It definitely just clicked one day for my daughter. She just decided one day that she was ready, peed in the potty and has been doing great. I'm due with my second in September, so I'm fully prepared for regressions. But I didn't want to miss this window of her being so excited about it. It's definitely earlier than I planned to potty train her, but she's ready and I'm just following her lead.

My 20 month old has been showing signs of readiness, including taking her dirty diapers off. It's annoying. I decided not to train her right now though. She can't communicate when she has to go and I don't know that she's old enough to have any type of bladder control. I did buy a potty insert and she sits up there twice a day. So far she hasn't gone.

Sounds like early stages of becoming aware and ready. It seems super young to me from a developmental standpoint, though I'm super hands off about this stuff and prefer it to develop naturally vs taking a training standpoint. Around q8 months my daughter would tell us she meeddd to go and would use the toilet without us ever prompting her. We never forced the issue and just took her lead because I didn't want to even try anything proactively until she was 3. Around 2 she asked for undies and every time she had an accident or refused to try to sit on the toilet, I would
Give her the choice to go to diapers again. She would choose diapers and then Want to try undies again a few weeks later. We just repeated the process 3-4 times and when she was 2.5, she was determined to keep using undies. At that point, it was a solid 2 weeks of constant reminders and lots of accidents, but she always wanted to go back in undies so we let her. After week 3 she was fully trained day and night and have only had a handful of accidents since then. It was super easy and no stress on anyone!

I would have potty trained at around 19 months but thats when lo2 was born. lo1 has been using the potty when pants-less at home since shortly after walking. we are having some poop troubles now as we have stopped using diapers except for sleeping at 28 months. mostly i have to prompt him to pee in the potty and we take the pot with us. he saves his poop for naptime or hiding in the closet while i am busy with the baby.

i potty trained a child i babysat at 18 months. it was great.

take his pants off for a few days, offer the potty often and say good bye to diapers! you will figure out how often they need to pee and can plan around that. they wont be totally independent potty users for a while (clothing is hard to manage and its a lot to remember).

We're currently very casually potty training our 21 month old. We've had a potty in the bathroom for months, and she's been interested in it and wanting to sit on it, but not actually doing anything. A couple weeks ago, she told us she needed to go, sat down, and went. So we're going with it. I ask her if she wants to sit on the potty when she wakes up, before and after nap, before bed, before we leave the house, anytime she messes with her diaper, and anytime I go to the bathroom. She's been peeing on the potty 2-4 times a day since we started two weeks ago.

Our DD started asking to sit on the potty at about 18mos, so we've taken a casual approach & supported her requests to use her potty, and have gradually started prompting more regular trips to the potty. She is pretty well poop trained with only an occasional poopy diaper if she's unable to get to the potty. She also now at 2yo goes pee on the potty about 2/3 of the time at home & starting to when we are away from home. I SAH so haven't pushed her for quicker training, but probably could (have).

@justjules: No method. We just offered the toilet right before and right after sleep, and about 20 minutes after eating. Additionally, we pretty much took her to the bathroom every 30-60 minutes during the day. Of course, there were a million accidents, but eventually it clicked. :)

@kes18: yes. I've been taking him with me when I go (oh mom life) and explaining that I'm going pee pee etc. he has been asking to use the potty and I just sit him down with his diaper on. Then we flush, and wash and be on our way (he loves that Daniel tiger song haha). He has never actually USED the potty though. But I'm wondering if I should start taking off the diaper?

Thanks for be checklist. He meets pretty much all of them except for maybe the sitting still part. He is quite the busy body. But will sit still if he is reading a book or watching Daniel Tiger for a while.

My LO was mostly potty trained by 22 months (started really potty training around 15 months). It worked for us.

My FAVORITE potty training tip is to buy the Potette Plus travel potty. It's amazing, and super convenient. It let us be really consistent without using the "there's no toilet around" excuse.

@Pollywog: For several months after we potty trained DS we brought a potty seat everywhere we went. He was too little without it. We would bring that along with a diaper bag with a change of clothes. We'd stick the potty seat in a plastic grocery bag, and when I used it I'd like the public toilet seat with toilet paper so it didn't get too gross, then throw it back in the bag.

DD1 was trained at 20 months pretty easily. But it only lasted for 4-6 weeks and then it all went to hell. I don't know if she lost interest or what, but it was miserable. Leaving the house was a nightmare. I ended up calling it quits around 22 months. I retrained shortly after 2 and it was much easier.

Does he ask to use the toilet? Or do you offer him? I believe mine knew for awhile when she had to go (as she would go hide to poop) but that didn't mean she was ready to use the potty. We just offered and eventually she started using it at home on and off but then when she started asking to use it at daycare we did the naked weekend that week and then sent her in underwear on Monday. VERY VERY easy! Of course she's had accidents here and there but not every day or even every week. Used the public restrooms since we did it. She was about 29mo when we did it. I'm sure seeing her friends use it is what prompted her at daycare. Peer pressure is very real! She is well over 3 now and zero regressions or issues really (other than sometimes getting too distracted and waiting until the last minute to pee).

I would just start asking if he wants to use the potty or go potty on the big potty. I think once they want to do it consistently, then do the naked weekend (I think it is or something similar to the Oh Crap method) where you take them to the potty every 15min.

Our daycare had checklist with the normal readiness signs- https://www.babycenter.com/0_potty-training-readiness-checklist_4384.bc
they just stressed that they usually needed to meet all or almost all of them. As some kids might be mentally ready but physically unable to hold it long enough to not have regular accidents (or the opposite  )

My 16 month old is poop trained. What we have done is have him sit on his potty when he wakes up, after breakfast, before nap, after nap, and after dinner. We make a huge deal when he goes. He knows he's a good boy and loves the clapping and cheering.

Outside of the house I am stumped. We pack his potty and I am looking for a potty seat for him to put on a public toilet.

E is 19mo old and has displayed signs of readiness to be potty trained. He tells us when he is about to go poop, and then tells us afterwards when he has gone. He is only somewhat regular in his bowel movements (usually in the morning but not always) He still seems pretty young though, and we spend a lot of our days out of the house so being able told hold it/ use public restrooms etc seem very overwhelming. so I'm hesitant to try. Who has potty trained around this age? Did you use a method you liked? I feel like I always read about potty training methods for much older kids.
