Our daycare discouraged pull-ups and they were only used during naps, at the parents' request. They were ok with cleaning up accidents and overall felt that ditching diapers/pull-ups completely was better for training.. Less confusion! :)

@Smurfette: they put a diaper on him for naps for the first month or so, when he was consistently waking up dry, they stopped.

@HappyBaker: Haha! A week of vacation to potty train good one! I did the pull up over the panties when we go out on the weekends. I think I am just going to tell them this is what we are doing. She wants her big girl panties as soon as we get home.

Our daycare also asked for pull ups, and they'll take him to try to potty. He just uses the pull ups as diapers. It doesn't work for my son. He is anti potty training! And they are starting to give him a rash. So we are back to diapers at home. I'm not sure what I'll send to daycare. We've put potty training on the back burner and will try again later.

Daycare didn't want her in pull-ups, they said to send her in underwear right away. She still wore (wears) diapers at naps and night.

She did amazing for a month, then had a major regressions - peeing everywhere all the time. Daycare said they didn't mind the accidents but I hated washing 839285 pairs of pants and underwear every night so i started sending her in pull-ups. Since then she has gotten much better so I send her in underwear again with minimal accidents, but still use pull ups when we are out and about because my sanity level can't handle it.

@Smurfette: We had a similar experience - our daycare teacher told us "most parents take a week off to potty train so that when you send them in underwear they will be ready". UM NO. There is no way I would waste an entire week of vacation days on potty training!

So we just took a weekend and made the switch to underwear, and then on that Monday sent her to daycare in underwear. She did really well - before she had been the same as yours, wearing pull ups randomly and sometimes peeing in them because, why not? For naps at home we use a diaper or pull up, and at school they actually put a pull up over her underwear, so she would know if she had an accident but not make a mess.

I also think once you really make the switch to underwear, you need to be consistent and not switch back (except for naps/nighttime). DD is super stubborn and fought me hard about not wanting the underwear the first day, and I realized if we lapsed back to pull ups we would just be fighting the same fight over and over again!

Good luck!

@mediagirl: our experience was similar. While they didn't explicitly say no pull ups, I never bought any. Daycare was willing to deal with the mess, and he only had 2 accidents the first week! After that, he would have an occasional accident, but that's normal.

@Mamaof2: I told DH that if she does good over the weekend I am just going to send her in panties. We have some training ones, so I can send. They have told me that they throw out panties if she poops in them. Which I get, I don't want them rinsing them in the regular sinks. Nor do I want to deal with it after sitting there all day.
@mediagirl: I talked to the director and she is a non-pull up fan but she said that it is really up to the teachers on how they want to handle it.
@kodybear: I agree! She knows she can pee so she will. She doesn't want to get Bubble Guppies, Minnie, or Princesses wet though!
@Amelieisme: I think it is all about the teachers and how it goes. You would think they would want her out of diapers! She is the only one in her class really interested but I think if she is trained more kids will want to be too. But yes I agree the lack of consistency is confusing.

@Smurfette: I feel your pain. My daycare wants to do pullups as well and my kid will just pee/poop in them just like a diaper. It really makes pottytraining difficult! I feel like some daycares are so much more helpful then mine is (at least according to people on this site  ). I'm actually going to take a few days of vacation next week for the sole purpose of pottytraining. My MIL is on summer break too so she can keep him the following week for me. I'm hoping that 12 days out of daycare can get him (at least mostly) trained and daycare will let him wear underwear.

ps-I have a lot of vacation and I do realize that most people don't have the option to do this, but I'm tired of having two kiddos in diapers and I REALLY think he's ready. He just needs some consistency.

This happened to me as well except they never told me about the (unofficial) rule that they prefer pull-ups til after we started training. And no I don't think pull-ups help. I definitely think my daughter is peeing in them cause she can and isn't holding it like she does at home. So basically she's never gonna be dry cause she knows she can pee whenever she wants at daycare. I know some kids can learn with pull-ups but mine won't! I'm planning to drop pull-ups when she's in the older class hopefully next week!

Our daycare told us to drop the pull-ups, send her in undies and they would deal with the messes. Daycare wants them out of diapers so they should be helping you get her out of diapers. I find it odd that they want her dry for a few days in pullups before they will pull them. Pull-ups are confusing for kids!

We didn't use pull-ups but she did have to stay dry in her diaper before moving to underwear. Once she had it down she had it down and wouldn't pee in her diaper - we were out once and couldn't get to a bathroom and I begged her to pee in her diaper and she wouldn't!

However, I do think she was being lazy in the AM and peeing in her diaper rather than walking to the bathroom. So, I put her in underwear and lo and behold she stayed dry and went on the potty as soon as she woke up!

so.... it could be holding her back.... will her teachers try a day with underwear and see how it goes?

It has been almost two weeks now since we really started potty training LO. There have been a couple days where she stays dry all day in her pull ups. We use pull-ups on the weekends when we aren't home, otherwise she is in panties. She wears pull-ups at day care. But I am wondering if she isn't learning to hold it cause she knows that she can go in her pull ups. Her teachers want her in pull-ups till she is dry multiple days. But then they have days where they don't take her every hour like they should be. So of course she is going to pee in the pull-up. I know she still needs a pull-up/diaper at night and naps and expect that for awhile. Although she has had a couple naps where she was dry the whole time. She definitely does way better at home with us.

I guess my question is what are your thoughts on pull-ups? Did they help or not? How did your day care handle it?
