@Anagram: We have to use a more gradual method for DS2. Even though he's exceptionally bright and observant, he has some physical issues, and needs to learn certain things - like the motor skills associated with potty training - one step at a time. DS1 pretty much figured it out and trained himself before 2...but I've also trained several foster children. The younger they were, the better the gradual method worked because they get to celebrate each new skill, and regressions don't become that big of a deal. The older my fosters were when trained, though, the better the quicker methods (like the 3 day) worked.

I guess my overall message is that if it causes additional stress and worry, I wouldn't do it so close to the new baby :). If it's just something you'd like to try, I'd say go for it!

@MrsBrewer: Once, quite accidentally. He was tickled, though. We're going to stay relaxed about it until he starts showing initiative...or until I see that he's completely ready to train the rest of the way. I try not to make too big of a deal about it, because I don't want him to feel bad if he regresses.

@Anagram: Yes, I've totally heard about the regressions. That's what I'm a little nervous for too honestly. She's very sensitive, and I don't want her to feel upset, or that she's let us down either you know? I've been trying to take her lead with everything, and she's really not asking to use the potty yet on her own.

So, we did the Oh Crap method for LO1, and they don't advise the gradual method of introducing the potty and having them practice, etc. So no advice about that part.

But since I'd heard so much about regressions after a new baby comes, we waited to train LO1 until my last week of maternity leave. That way, I was home for a whole week and LO2 was then 3 months old and I felt like LO1 had adjusted to the new baby well, etc. It was a fairly textbook week of going through the "blocks" of the Oh crap method and it was successful. So don't feel like you have to rush it now--you can always do it after the new baby arrives. LO1 was 2 years and 4 months when she trained.

My second daughter is now 21 months old and has been showing a lot of readiness signs, I guess from watching big sister so much. She ASKS to go to the potty and insists on taking down her pants and taking her diaper off--and has pooped twice on the potty. But I still feel like she's a little young for the bladder development, so we are waiting a bit longer.

We tried around 22 months. It was ok the first day and the second day she just regressed and got stubborn. She still tells us every time she poops and if she needs a diaper change but we're not pushing it for now. We might try again in the summer or just wait until she tells us she wants undies. Either way if you get her trained now there's a good chance for regression with a baby coming.

@tlynne: Has your son gone yet on the potty while sitting on it? I've sat DD on it a few times without bottoms on, but she hasn't peed yet at all. I feel like once she goes for the first time, she will get excited about it

@MrsBrewer: You can start teaching basics in a relaxed, no-pressure way to help prepare her. DS2 is also 23 months and has shown interest in going potty. He's been learning how to take off and put on his shorts and pull-ups, and we sit on the potty twice a day for a few minutes and talk about what we do there. That's really it for now. We'll start watching Elmo potty videos once he gets the basic ideas and encouraging him to use the potty. Potty training isn't usually as hard/bad as it's made out to be!

Gah, I think I'm at the point. I was looking at check lists online, and my 23 month old daughter seems to be "ready". We have a potty chair already, and keep it in the bathroom. She will often sit on it, with her clothes on while we are going potty.

But I'm 24 weeks pregnant right now, and due when she will be 26 months. I feel like 23 months is young to potty train, but who knows! What would you do? Would you start trying, and maybe she will be good before the baby comes? Or just wait till after the baby is here??
