We always make sure the kids go potty before we leave the house. If DS says he needs to go and we're 15 mins away from our destination, i'll tell him to hold it and he will.
So far we haven't had any accidents in the car.

We always have her go before going out. Luckily the car rides were never longer than 15 minutes so we would then ask if she had to go upon reaching our destination. If it were 15 minutes away I would try to find a destination right away if the whole detour will be less than 15 minutes...otherwise I would tell her to hold it in and hope we don't have an accident. Do you have a puddle pad of some sort you can put underneath LO in the car seat?

I once made the mistake of forgetting to have her use the potty before leaving daycare and our train was delayed. I told her to just go in her pull-ups...well, we regressed pee wise after that because she thought it was fine to just pee in her pull-ups!

Diapers/pull-ups are so hassle free but once she gets it, it will be fine. We can even drive for 2 hours without her needing to use the potty.

Miss A wore a "special" nappy when we went out for the first couple of weeks (I bought a different brand to help her differentiate) then we would either stop on the side of the road if we were miles from a bathroom or find the nearest one. My other strategy was to offer to stop whenever we were passing a public toilet.

Now that LO has been potty trained for 3-4 months (save for occasional accidents) if she needs to go while driving i tell her she can pee on the grass or hold on till we find a toilet - she usually chooses to hold on (or doesn't actually need to pee!)

We would have him use the potty before leaving the house and he usually did. For a short trip (like 15-30 minutes) I would not stop and tell him we will be there soon. If it is a longer trip (1-2 hours), then I'd find somewhere to stop if he asked. We used pull ups for the first week or two when out until he was comfortable using public bathrooms, but we never encouraged using them and expected him to keep them dry. I think it sends them mixed messages to tell them that sometimes it's ok to pee in your pants and other time it is not. He's never had an accident during my 30-40 minute commute and I am completely opposed to (for myself, don't care if others do it) having a potty in the back of my suv or carrying around a pottette travel potty seat.

I have a potty in the back of the car. I try to avoid it, but use it when we are too far away from a restroom. If we are less than 5 minutes from somewhere, I tell him to wait. We've only used the potty in the back 3-4 times in the 2 months we have been training.

DD has been using the potty (inconsistently) at home for awhile now but I was too scared/lazy to switch her underwear. When we're out and she tells me she needs to peepee I tell her to go in her diaper and I'll change it later. I loved the convenience. Now I'm finally ready to officially train and switch to underwear. My question is when you take your LO out in the beginning and they tell you they need to peepee during the car ride, what do you do? Let's say the destination is 15 minutes away. Do you pull over and find the nearest restroom? Do you tell your LO to try to hold it for as long as they can? Or do you just expect there to be an accident in the car seat?
