My DS was very much like yours. He would not go to public bathroom OR pee in a diaper, which was even worse! One time he really needed to go pee, and we were an hour away from home. we went into the home depot public bathroom and he cried and rolled on the floor. In a public bathroom. Yikes. Then he held his pee for an hour (even though he had a pull up on) until we sped home. :-(

We talked to our pediatrician. He suggested us to have a bag of goodies of cheap toys that are bought from dollar shop. We explain that every time he uses the public bathroom, he will get a toy. We also worked with the daycare teacher so the teachers talk his ears off that that is what all people do. Someone telling him other than us helped a lot. I was almost going to take him to the pediatrician so that an authority would talk to him! But we jumped over the hump before that.Good luck!

ETA: The first time we were successful using the public bathroom was after the teacher talked to DS (she talked to him about this every day for a week! She is an angel). We were in the car driving home. DS said he wanted to use the bathroom. DH pulled into a Sheraton, we went to the bathroom there which was very big, bright, clean and quiet. He went. I cheered and clapped. We went back to the car. He got a toy. We cheered more. The rest is history :)

My kid is stubborn about going when not at home (and will only pee on his little potty still) but it was going out and not having a choice that helped him get over his fear of usIng other bathrooms.

For a few days, he even held his pee all day at daycare so that he could go at home. We use bribes/rewards to help him get past that.

So what's worked for us is warning him about the potty situation before we leave the house and then just going out and hoping for the best. We make a BIG deal out of it when he uses another potty. It's been 4-5 months though and he is still hit or miss.

Also - my son resists like crazy if I tell him it's time to go potty so I've just stopped telling him to go. I remind him that he needs to put his pee in the potty, not get it on the floor etc but if he says he doesn't t have to go, then I let it be. He's a lot better about going since I backed off.

@Meso: Yes, I was also going to suggest a pottette, since she could use it behind a tree or something if it's the actual space of the bathroom itself (not just the public toilets) that weirds her out. Good luck! It gets easier!

Is the potette seat an option? You can fold it up to put in a diaper bag but you can also set it up as either a seat on top of toilet or as a miniature toddler potty with bag liner. I have set my kids on top of one when a bathroom isn't convenient during potty training. I try to do it in a low traffic area since kiddo is out in the open doing his or her business.

@Meso: Didn't start potty training yet, but if you really don't want to "miss out", would it be okay to just let her wet her pants and plan on changing multiple times (of course to try to get her to go to the bathroom first).

My friend that's potty training now, she got an oxo seat that uses disposable bags underneath so it seems doable to carry it. But it might be weird to whip it out randomly on the road?

@catgirl: Thanks for the advice. That's a great idea, if i decide to put her in a diaper I'll put the underwear under it.

Maybe this summer we'll spend most of the days at the park and not do "big" trips until she's ready to go to the public restroom.

@Meso: Mine was basically the same about public restrooms. The thing that ended up getting him over it was us having to do a baked milk challenge at the doctor's office (he's allergic to milk). We were there for four hours and he was drinking apple juice during it. Eventually he just couldn't hold it any longer. The bathroom at the doctor's office was just one toilet in a private room, so it was close enough to being home that he didn't have an issue, but I think because we were NOT at home (or daycare) and the toilet was similar to toilets in public restrooms, that he seemed to get over his fear after that. After that one time, we never had an issue with public restrooms again.

Hmm... that's harder then. A girl I nannied for was scared of the people and automatic flushers so we came up with solutions for those and it was better. If it is just a general fear I think the main thing to help will be time.

I know you said she doesn't mind being wet but if you do use a pull up or diaper I would put it on over underwear. So she still gets the wet fabric feeling. For some kids it would definitely make them regress to go back and forth though...

@catgirl: I don't know exactly, when I ask her she can't tell me why. The times we have gone into the public bathroom, no one else was there, so it's not the loud flushing or other sounds. The second we step into the stall, she shakes her head no and tells me to hold her. At school, they have stalls that separate the toilets. She's fine sitting on the toilet at home, so it's not the size of it.

@Adira: Yea, that's what I was thinking of doing, but it's the summer and the weather is so nice, I want to take her out to enjoy the summer.

Any tricks on how to get her over her fear of public bathrooms?

Hi All,

My LO is starting to potty train (about a month now). She is scared and refuses to potty in a public bathroom, I do have a small potty that we keep in the trunk of the car, but if we go to the zoo or the amusement park, which we all know are big places, it'll be hard to really see anything if we have to pop in and out every 2 hours. Factoring the time that it takes to walk to the animals or rides and back out, it's not much time spent actually doing something. I'm not sure what to do, put her in a diaper, or will that make her regress?

I should also add she's strong willed and while she initially took quickly to potty training, lately she has been fighting me everytime I say it's time to potty. So I'm worried that if i suggest she can wear a diaper when we go out for long trips, it'll turn into wanting to wear diapers all the time, and she has to be potty trained before going into the next class in the fall.

Also, she doesn't mind if her underwear and pants are wet, she would rather be wet then go to the public bathroom.
