A friend sent me the ebook on the 3 day method. The author swears that 22 months is the ideal age. I know mine are ready (twins) because they tell me when they have a dirty diaper, and make certain motions when they are going pee (poop is rather obvious from facial expression  ). They do the sign for potty and ask to sit on it, albeit with their clothes on. So we're going to go for it here over Xmas break; hubby is a teacher w/ 3 weeks off so we are just going to try it!

@Mrs squirreld: we've discussed training with both my MIL and our daycare lady and the conclusion we reached was that we'd try it at daycare in Jan IF he was showing any signs of being ready but that anytime after that she thought we'd just be setting ourselves up for a huge regression. Daycare does a method similar to the 3 day method and she's had great success but she normally likes to wait until they are 2. My MIL is insistent that DS will be out of diapers before LO2 but I trust the lady who's been watching kids for 25 years more :silly: I actually had no intentions of even trying anything but we've been fighting a rash since his first birthday and I think he just needs to be in underwear for it to go away completely.

I stuck my girls on the potty often between diaper changes even as babies. Both showed a preference to pooping on the potty, which has been nice. My oldest was pretty well day trained by a year and a half though if she got over tired she sometimes had accidents, she went in spurts with that - never while we were out though. She wasn't ready for night time till closer to two and a half - not that she didn't have nights where she'd wake up with a dry diaper, some weeks it would be most nights, it just wasn't consistent enough. We def encouraged potty use but they both went through phases where they weren't into it so we just stopped for a bit.

@Mrs. Lion: nope, I help her. We give her raisins sometimes, but not every time. Sometimes I just give them to her to get her to sit on the potty a little longer. I think the benefit to early training is that at this age they love to please us, so our verbal praise is enough!

@Silva: can she take off and pull up her pants by herself? Or do you do that for her and take off her diaper? Lo has started waking up dry from naps so i think i am going to start putting him on the potty too. We got one that lights up and flushes and plays music. I dont want to do candy rewards and was hoping getting to flush and hear the music would provide reinforcement. It also sings when any liquid falls in the potty, so they get immediate feedback. Not sure how necessary that is but he loves to flush it when i go to the bathroom :)

@Silva: Awesome, that sounds exactly what I want to do. I'm home with her all day, so I figure she can sit on a potty when I'm in there doing my thing, too. If she gets interested in it early, great. If not, oh well!

@Mrs. Rabbit: I got the smaller baby bjorn potty, and it's been great for my petite daughter, who can sit on it/stand up independently.
I did zero research about potty training or toilet learning before we started. I just needed somewhere to sit her when I went to the bathroom, and figured it wouldn't hurt to pop her on it and talk to her about what I was doing (we are both on the potty, mama pees on the potty, you can too, etc.). When she started showing interest I actually got worried that I was pushing her too early or something, so I started researching then and found a bunch of stuff on the science of parenting website saying that there is no evidence that supports waiting until they are older....so we just kind of started putting her on it when we thought she might have to go.
It was all very haphazard, but it's working. I just read about toilet learning last night, and was surprised to find it's basically what we've been doing.
I don't know what's "normal," I just know my kid seems to understand a LOT and wanted to use the potty from time to time...so we followed her lead, in some ways. I have zero expectations about it being accomplished any time soon. In fact, I suspect this method will take a long time. But we will see. Just rolling with it for now.

@Mrs. Lion: I was apparently potty trained by 22 months...or so my mom says! It gives me hope for potty training my daughter!

@Silva: Awesome, I'm going to look up toilet learning now. My daughter is definitely interested in it and I've been thinking about getting a little potty for her. Did you research before you bought one?

I don't know what I'm doing, but we started something at 14 months. I bought her a potty when she was about one, and let her play with it, sit on it, whatever. A few weeks ago we noticed she was going to the potty right after she'd peed or pooped in her diaper. She we started bringing her there occasionally. She now averages one poop and two pees a day on the potty. She also has started telling us when she is peeing and pooping, I figure if we keep this up, eventually she will be able to tell us before she goes. She seems interested, and is at an age where she likes to please us, and understands, so we are just going with it. She is in diapers still most of the time, when she gets better at predicting we will try using underwear at home.

He's been pooping in the potty since 20 months--they said at daycare at 19 months he was ready. I could totally PT him but we're busy traveling with summer and I'm going to wait until he's back in school. Several friends have also had success before 2.

Both my girls learned toileting before two. Our first had a big regression when her sister was born at 21 months. They both told us when they were ready. We did Montessori style toilet learning. I have a blog post on it.

@sandy: i am definitely on board with the 3 day method. Lo is 16 months and isnt communicating much (not at all regarding the potty) but ive started to notice that he is dry after some naps. Baby 2 is due right around his 2nd bday, so in a perfect world he would be potty trained by then...but i am wondering just how realistic that is.

We potty trained at 24 months with the 3 day method and lots of good advice from @chopsuey :) . We didn't really have any signs other than she didn't constantly have a wet diaper. I just wanted to try it and it worked by day 3.

I also read the 3 day potty method article on baby center over and over and over. Be consistent and give it a real shot is my advice - people who don't commit to bottomless usually don't have success in 3 days. The article says the method works as young as 18 months I believe (and doesn't work as well for older kids).

I know one mom who had successfully potty trained her 18 month old so it can be done

DD was trained 2 weeks before her 2nd birthday. She showed signs of readiness at around 21 months, but I had just given birth to her baby brother, so didn't wanna deal with it.

I knew she was ready because she would say her word for poop, I would check and see nothing, then a minute later she'd go! After she pee'd, she would grab the front of her diaper and tell me she went.

We did the 3 day method, but she was peeing and pooping in the potty on her own like a pro after day 1.
