We did bottomless at first, then added undies after a few days - so I voted for bottomless, but I don't think it actually made a big difference. It WAS convenient the first few hours while he figured out the sensation of peeing, so we could just whisk him to the potty without worrying about the underwear.

Honestly though, without a diaper on, your son is going to quickly discover how easy it is to get to his lower body regardless.

We didn’t do OCPT but we started bottomless and about an hour into it DS requested underpants. If I had to vote I would say underwear, successful. (He was really easy to train though and we did it basically right at 3 - started 2 weeks before his third birthday.)

@autumnleaves: @LBee: good point, fixed poll to allow multiple votes!

@ShootingStar: yep! I'm getting ahead on my laundry today! And we cloth diaper soooo I think the "extra" laundry won't be too bad.

OCPT didn’t work for us. So naked, unsuccessful.

Underwear did.

We sort of did it both ways. We started with bottomless the first day or so. Then we went to undies. Bottomless helped everyone that first day because it was more apparent when he would start peeing and we’d put him right on the potty without having to worry about bottoms being in the way. (We had a little potty in the living room).

Honestly, I’m not sure it matters that much. But be prepared for lots of laundry, lol.

DS1 hates being commando or just being unclothed in general. The easiest combination was character underwear with shorts and he really trained himself a few weeks after turning 3 - it was painless. Any time prior to that where we tried something more forced he shut down.

We did commando for about a month when my son was 2.5, very few accidents and graduating to undies gave him a goal and incentive.

You should allow multiple votes with the poll. With DS1 OCPT was unsuccessful. He completely freaked out and wanted pants on. A few months later training him in 3 days worked using training pants.

We do “potty learning” but went straight to undies and although we’ve had our fair share of accidents my almost 3yo understands how it all works and that he needs to keep his undies dry. My philosophy is that if a child knows how toileting works and is willing to make the jump then undies aren’t a hindrance.

We had a few false starts to potty training sand it wasn’t successful until A few months after DS turned three. We had to do underwear because DS hates being naked. He would refuse to walk around without pants on.

My friend sent me an e-book with a 3-day PT method, and I also read OCPT. One of the things they differ on is starting with naked time vs. starting with underwear. I get the pros/cons and reasoning of both, and I want to go with OCPT just because it's so popular, BUT..... if my son is naked from the waist down, he will just play with his penis all day long! 95% sure of that. So I feel like I have to do underwear instead, or pants while going commando. I also feel like the wet feeling might motivate him more, vs. peeing outright??

Did anyone modify OCPT this way and feel successful still?

Which way did you start? Poll below!
