@Aria: there was one more failed attempt in there before she trained. But when she did officially train four months later we were golden day, night, and nap trained within five days.

@oliviaoblivia: Were things better when you brought the potty back out after a few months?

My oldest did that the first time I tried to train her.
She absolutely refused to go in the potty or her diaper. She'd eventually spring a leak and lose her mind crying and screaming. I put her in a warm bath to relax her body and hid the potty for a couple months.

DS is 19 months and we have had pottys around pretty much always. Right now he likes to sit on it sometimes, but won't pee. He will pee standing up onto a cloth diaper, it's like I've weewee pad trained my toddler... Keeping it stress free and making it OK to mess up is important when they are this young. It's great that they are realizing they have control but that can be confusing when they are trying to balance their own feelings with your desires. Our current strategy is lots of nakid time and reacting with an "oh look, you peed" followed by really chill clean up. If he needs to pee he will go on a diaper if I ask him.

My daughter is 19 months old and we recently brought the small potty out of storage. We weren't intending to potty train yet but she saw it and was excited to use it. She peed and pooped on it the first night. We let her sit on it if she asked but didn't push it at all. She had a few more successes and a few times she sat on it and nothing happened.

But today she peed on the potty and got really upset. Then before bath she insisted on sitting on it but refused to pee. It got to the point where she clearly had to go, but wouldn't go on the potty or her in diaper and just stood there crying because she had to pee but didn't want to go. It was so sad. We've put the potty out of sight again hoping she'll forget about it, but has anyone had a situation like this? What did you do to help your LO? I wanted to keep the experience low pressure and positive and now I feel like I messed things up for the future.

TL;DR: What did you do if your child didn't want to pee in their diaper, but was also afraid to pee in the potty?
