I've yet to do it in a crowded public place like the zoo, but when we're out for walks and DD has to go, I just hold her in the bushes. Unfortunately, little kids can't hold it for long (although DD did manage almost 20 minutes this weekend on a roadtrip!), so when she has to go, there's no waiting.

@Mrs. Bee: My friends made it a game and put a Cheerio into the toilet... and had their son aim for the Cheerio.

@Mrs. Bee: having two girls, I have no idea about the standing thing, but you just reminded me that my mom friends with boys say it's so easy to potty train boys in public. Like at the park, they say they just train them to just go pee in empty water bottles or styrofoam cups. haha. my eldest girl on the other hand is picky about where she pees!

we carry this portable potty:

http://amzn.to/uvpZU3

but when we don't have it, we hold charlie over the toilet and he goes. i just don't want to touch the public toilets.

my big question is... how do we transition him to standing to pee?!

since my LO was potty trained from the start on the regular toilet with a potty topper, we didn't use those potties with the shopping bags. I was grateful for that! We got a foldable potty topper from Amazon by Primo. I just put that over a disposable seat cover or two. my LO was also pretty good in public about holding it til we got to a bathroom. I can't even ever remember her having an accident in public. She is so funny too because sometimes she just didn't like the bathroom, even if she had to go, so she'd actually hold it til we got home.

We went to the zoo this past weekend and I saw two different families during the day whip out baby potties in somewhat remote areas of the trails. Both of the kids were sitting on the potties (I think they were lined with plastic shopping bags) with their family members coaxing them to go.

I not even close to potty training my LO but I want to know...is this something that you do too? I don't look forward to this stage!
