we tried the bare bottom method and DD and it was a total fail. Instead of getting angry and frustrated we gave up. we were okay with her using diapers, the truth, it made our lives easier.

Well one day we were in Marshalls and DD saw some cartoon underwear and I said we can only by them if she ready to give up diapers. Well that worked. She said she was a big girl and refused diapers. She potty trained herself.

DD also loves to wash her hands, so she gets to wash her hands after she uses the potty.

@Ree723: Trying to do the same with my 2.5 yr old son. Last week in one day I cleaned up pee twice but the real mess was he pooped in the potty (so happy about that) but he began playing in it. By the time I realized what was going on he had tons of water all of the floors, toilet, wall and him. Plus pieces of soggy toilet paper on the floors and in his hair. The poop thankfully was only smeared on the toilet seat. None the less I wasn't too pleased. But so hard to discipline him for it when I want to encourage using the potty! Such hard times!

We didn't really do the three day method, but it sort of worked out that way. Sadie was pretty much good to go by the end of the third day, and has only gotten better. The first day and a half though... hell. Some things that worked for us: naked bottom half for the first 2-3 weeks, potty ring on the big potty (instead of a potty seat-she just played with is), having her watch/help me go (watch, get my toilet paper, help wash my hands), and M&M's Minis!

@Mrs. Jacks: Thanks! I'll have to look into toilet learning - I hadn't heard of it before now, I definitely think we need to try a different approach though as ours isn't quite working for her.

@purrpletulips: Ugh, the taking off of the diaper is the worst! As evidenced here by not one, but two incidents today, and the mountain of laundry that ensued as a result!

@LulaBee: Oh my goodness, I'm so jealous! I hope DD does something similar very, very soon! Well done you!

@pregnantbee:    Responding now :-)

Everytime I see people doing the 3-day training, I'd say, the 3-day training is overrated!!!!! If it doesn't work for you, stop and do it gradually. I failed miserably with the 3-day training and both my son and I were mentally scarred... for nothing!! After that I took a break, and we just had "underwear time" an hour each day (when I know for sure he just had a wet diaper and wouldn't likely wet himself in the next hour), usually before bath time. If he stays dry, I add in more "underwear time".... and gradually he gets it.

I truly don't know why I even did the 3-day thing to torture myself with.

Potty training should be a part of the process. We should NOT organize our lives around it, especially it is something so unpleasant. Please don't do it bees.

My daughter is 2.5 and we have never pushed potty training... then on Monday of this week she asked to wear panties and hasn't looked back! I don't even have to ask her if she has to go, she tells us when she does and goes to her potty and does her business. She gets 1 M&M for pee and 2 for poop, and I hope to wean her off of those in the next few weeks. My advice is just to wait for them to be ready! Good luck!

Right there with you. DS (2.5y) started showing interest and had some dry morning diapers. We've been putting him on the potty each morning, before/after nap and at bedtime and were having some success then he got an epic ear infection and we're lucky if he'll even sit on the potty let alone go. My favorite part is that he can now take his pants on/off as well as his diaper and likes to do it whenever I'm busy and can't get to him. Luckily no accidents to date but I expect the playroom carpet will need replaced when we're done with this.

@HabesBabe: I hear ya! My DD turns 3 at the end of June so we're right there with you. We've been doing big girl underwear with a pull up over it and it at least eliminates the hysteria when she feels pee running down her leg, not so sure it's doing much for helping her get stuff in the potty.

@Kemma: Six weeks?!? Noooo, I can't bear the thought of doing this for another six weeks!

Thanks for the encouragement and commiseration all - glad I'm not the only one who finds this the suckiest part of parenting so far. I thought we were making progress yesterday but so far today, we've only gotten one pee in the potty, and just had a big poo in her pull up whilst 'napping' that she then smushed into her carpet, before sneaking out of her room and crawling up onto our bed (with a white duvet nonetheless) and doing another poo up there. Sigh. I'm contemplating keeping her in diapers until she heads off to college at this point!!!

So we're also going gradual. J (2.5) will poop in the potty 80% of the time at home, and if he's naked (no pull up/underwear/pants) he'll make it to the potty 100% of the time for pee and poo. But it's so annoying having a naked toddler - I'm constantly washing his hands and the toys so we do bottomless mornings and then he pees in the diaper all afternoon/evening. I should really put a little more effort in...

You're not alone!

My favorite is when our LO signs that she has to poop, then sits on the potty for 15 minutes, I give up, and she poops 3 minutes later (in her diaper). Ha. Our friends had to try the 3 day method three times ... Finally, they did what you mentioned, and it stuck! You'll get there!!

I'm getting ready to do this with my 3 year old son. I'm waiting until spring break so I can have a whole week where I don't have to go anywhere or pick up my DD from school. I'm not looking forward to it because he is not interested at all. I'm hoping that the 1st time he pees himself he will decide that potty training is a good idea. Probably wishful thinking. It was not easy when i potty trained my DD. My husband wanted her potty trained before DS was born but I was 7 months pregnant at the time and highly hormonal.
I hope that it clicks for your daughter soon. Cleaning up potty accidents is not fun.

My kid turns 3 in July, so she's a little over 2.5.... and this SUCKS. We tried the 3-day method 2 weekends ago, and it got progressively worse each day. Now, she's OK with using the potty twice a day-- before and after her bath. I tried putting her in training undies yesterday, and she peed in them, and didn't even care (I only found out when I picked her up from playing outside).

I don't know if I should just wait until she shows me she's ready, or if we should keep pushing! She's so stubborn at this age.

.....said no parent EVER. :bummed:

Currently in the throes of potty training my 2.5 year old and it is not going all that well, sigh. We attempted the three day method over Christmas and it was a massive failure so we put a pin in it for a couple of months. We just started again this week with a more gradual approach, and it sort of seems like she's kind of starting to get it.....sort of.... It is just such hard work and I'm exhausted but I'd say at best, she is maybe getting stuff in her potty maybe 20% of the time, so I think it's going to be a long road yet, sigh.

Anyone else in the trenches with potty training right now? Or thinking about starting soon but still trying to muster the courage to take the plunge? Commiserations and/or words of encouragement appreciated :-)
