@KT326: i have this for the hall bathroom, which folds easy but it still seems so big. I'll have to look into that one.

@Chuckles: Agreed! DS2 does this in the morning. We have step stools from Ikea that he stands on.

We started potty training with him sitting but he quickly moved to standing. Apparently he taught all of his little friends at school to stand too! :)

@Sams Mom: we have this one:

https://www.target.com/p/cosco-1-step-all-steel-step-stool/-/A-13130248

Our son had a hard time pooping in the potty. The pediatrician recommended a stool with a handle. He was able to kind of squat over the toilet and hold on to the handle to steady himself. I liked that I could fold it up and stash it next to the toilet when we had company.

I am going on a mission to TJ Maxx, Home Goods, and Marshalls this weekend to find folding stools to stash in every bathroom. Maybe they will help with standing to pee, or even going on the regular potty at all.

@Chuckles: this!

We did standing. When he was slightly shorter he stood on a stool and leaned onto the back of the toilet - less aim issues. When we tried to teach him to sit the pee went everywhere so I said forget it and went right to standing.

Ok, my son's daycare taught all the boys this genius thing - he would stand on a step stool, lean over, and rest his hands on the top of the toilet tank. It worked really well to avoid having to worry about aiming at such a young age.

Sitting to pee is easy for him.
Standing to pee is difficult for him.
So why would I bother teaching him to stand, when really all I care about is him learning the body signals and getting to the potty on time? Standing to pee is a much further stage down the road that I just don't care about.

FWIW, DH sits to pee when he is in front of LO.

Also we started at 2y2m and now at 2y5m he is like 85% accurate and only has one pee accident every other day related to play distraction, adult distraction, or adult busyness.

I found that sitting is good. Sometimes he just thinks he needs to pee but if he sits he will realize he actually has to poop. Especially during early potty learning he want great at knowing ahead of time which it would be.

@FaithFertility: I bought a potty chair and pullups months ago (he was about 18-20 months old) because my son wakes up dry from naps and sleep 95% of the time, and have woke up with poop in his diaper since he was little little. He wasn't having it then, I'm hoping this time around since he led this time we're going to have success.

@wrkbrk: It’s going fairly well! It’s been a week. He still has accidents here and there at home (only once a day tops, just pee) so we should probably still be prompting him more, but he’s generally really into the potty and naps sans diaper with no accidents (his idea, he took his diaper off in the crib after I put him down on day 2 and has been doing great since). And today we took a trip into the city, brought his potty and he went poop in it while sitting in the back of my husband’s Jeep in the parking garage

@Sams Mom: If the toilets in your home are more the problem than his actual height, I would be inclined to get a very small step stool (almost like the steps you use for step aerobics, lol) for a toilet or two at home. And he’ll prob be fine at MOST other toilets.
My son is 3.75 and about 43inches tall and I’d say 1/10 public toilets are slightly more difficult but not impossible. He just has to do tip toes. And if he REALLY had to he could sit and tuck it (has to do that for poop anyway).

ETA: this step stool wold prob be perfect. You don’t want it to be too high because the angle he has to aim at would be too different. My guy has been standing to pee for almost a year and the couple of times he decided to goof off and stand on a tall step stool to pee he made a huge mess.

Sitting is way easier to start, AND at least in our house, they were too short (even standing on a stool) to face the toilet and get good aim. My little guy is 2.5 and he does MUCH better peeing sitting down.

We trained at 3 and started with little potty sitting and then did big potty standing. We need a step stool due to our giant toilets. Also i got the advice on here to have them hold onto the lid when standing up - forces them to lean over in a way that helps aim. When sitting we really drilled into him to push his penis down, before that he went on his pants half the time. I’d prefer he stand up all the time but some public toilets are too big without a step stool still.

@josina: I think if I had a stool in every bathroom he might do better peeing standing. He's really tall for his age (37.5") but we have tall toilets too. I've heard the peeing outside thing helps, but I also don't want him thinking he can whip it out wherever we are... So conflicting.

My son learned to pee standing up at about 2-1/2. He actually first 'got it' when we let him pee outside.
He's 3-1/2 now and he STILL strips down to pee most of the time. I think he just doesn't want to dribble on his pants.

Also, fair warning, don't stand in front of him when he pee's sitting down! DS was pooping, and right as I bent down to pick up his undies, started pee'ing across the bathroom. THIS close to getting it in the face!

@Mrs Spoon: I'll look into that method, he just started grabbing at his diaper one day, then would pee. So I asked him if he needed to go and he ran to the bathroom. The bad thing is when he poops in his pull up (only about 30% successful with poop) he pulls it off, looks in it, and says ewww yuck. :P
