I think LO1 would have been ready to potty train around 19 months but thats when LO2 came along. We waiting until just after 2. I am glad we didn't try to do it when LO2 was new because there were so many behavior things that came up and were hard to deal with without poop going everywhere.

When lo2 was born, lo1 was a few months shy of 3 and had been periodically using the potty for almost a year, knew when she was going, could communicate that she was going, and was basically ready, EXCEPT, it was a flashpoint for power struggles that were just unnecessary. Her teacher phrased it that she wasn’t emotionally ready, and her pediatrician agreed not to push it near the baby’s birth. So we didn’t push it, just let her wear diapers when she wanted, and just kept asking. Finally it clicked when she was about 3y3m and she’s been wearing undies since. The good thing is she barely had any accidents (maybe 2?). Bad thing was it took forever, but I tend to go with the flow with my kids on these things.

Whenever my kid was ready I would do it. Mine is 27 months nearly and I have tried half heartedly a few times, but she’s not ready yet. She tells me when she has pooped sometimes or when she has peed, but she doesn’t really like using the toilet or the singing potty she has. She was 22 months old when our second was born. I’m going to continue waiting until the summer probably and then potty train for preschool and hope she’s fully ready.

I don’t mind changing diapers at all, it’s more her who is getting annoyed with it.

My inclination with LO2 (just over 2 years) is to wait, but if he were really ready, I would go with it and start potty training. I just go by the kid's readiness. That would be my answer for MIL too.

LO1 was 2y10mo when LO2 was born. We waited until we all adjusted a bit - LO1 was 2 weeks shy of 3 and LO2 was 7 weeks old. He wasn’t showing true readiness signs until maybe a month before LO2 was born, and I didn’t want to rush it/risk a major regression. It went really well — much easier than I expected — and I’m really glad we waited until he was ready and the initial newborn chaos died down a little.

My son will be 2y8m in May when baby 2 is born (so he's almost 2.5 now). He's really verbal but otherwise not showing a ton of potty readiness. I'm planning to wait till this summer (he will be 3 in August) when baby is a few months old. I hope it will be smoother sailing then.

Same boat. Lo2 will be 2 in a month. Lo3 is due couple of weeks after that. I potty trained my lo1 at 2. But she was very verbal. Lo2 is not.

He does follow me into bathroom and we do sit down on little potty and he says shhhhhhh. But that’s about it.

We potty trained DS1 when DS2 was 4 months old. He was ready before that, but we had just moved, had the new baby, and transitioned him out of his crib in the 6 months before that, so we waited until things were a little more calm and (hopefully) less stressful for him! FWIW, he was REALLY easy to PT. And two in diapers wasn’t bad at all!

ETA: DS1 was 2.5 when we potty trained

I trained my 2yo when my baby was 6 weeks old and it worked out great. I didn’t want to do it while pregnant and once I felt adjusted to having both of them out in public (the thing about potty training that intimidated me the most) I just went for it.

@HappyBaker: I agree about being pregnant! I’d train with a baby over pregnant

We chose to wait a few months and just get used to life with the new baby first! Also the idea of potty training while super pregnant was not appealing to me, there’s a lot of bending / sitting around involved. We ended up waiting till DD was almost 3 and baby was 5 or 6 months old. Same with her transition to a bed.

We potty trained with a newborn and it was totally fine. My first I remember just being on the couch for hours but baby #2 I tried to put down if he was asleep, or I just carried him around. The potty training was really just a moment in time and I don’t have bad thoughts about it. We just were very on top of prompting to go. My second was born when my older was 2y4mo and we trained at 2.5. Basically I think potty training would have been the same amount of difficulty with or without a newborn. I specifically waited until after the baby though because I didn’t want to deal with any regressions

LO1 turns 2 on Jan 27. LO2 is due Feb 23. I will be home from Feb 23 - Aug 1, when LO1 is about 2.5.

I wasn't really on board at all with potty training right now, I wanted to wait until April or May (or later) but MIL has been pushing it here and there, and she is our babysitter (and will stay babysitting during maternity leave). Also, LO1 poops have gotten nasty and I'm quickly more and more open to potty training for that reason alone. He has most signs of readiness but NOT the communication abilities. Of course, his readiness is the #1 factor.

If your LO1 turned 2 around / soon before LO2 came around, what did you decide to do with potty training? Train before or after the newborn period, and why?

Having 2 in diapers is not intimidating to me.... currently.
