We just kind of went for it. Once we were done with diapers, we were done with them for everything. It was a little worrisome taking her out of the house in undies, but we put a cover on her car seat, and if she has to go while we're out and about, I line the public potty, hold her on it, and help her wash her hands. I always bring a spare pair of undies and pants, but she hasn't needed them. I realized I had to give her some credit and control, and it's been a whole lot easier than I thought it would be.

We're starting potty training right now too. My daughter will be 2.5 in November and I think she's ready since we talk about it all the time and she seems really excited about it. I'm so nervous about the public bathroom situation, I avoid them whenever possible. I recently read an article written by a mom dealing with the whole newly potty trained/ public bathroom thing. It was hilarious and by the end of the article she was carrying a potty around in her bag just like all the other moms she used to make fun of. I'm definitely getting a portable potty..

@Mrsbells: We haven't run into any issues finding a bathroom yet. We will tell him to hold it and wait until the next exit to find a bathroom. Once we were on the turnpike, and the rest stop bathroom was closed. We used the portable potty and let him pee outside.

@yin: thanks! That is some great advice

General question to everyone: What happens if you are no where near a bathroom

I also have the same travel potty seat, and it works well. The best way for me to conquer the fear of a recently potty trained toddler in public was just to go out and give it a try. Public restrooms can be scary for toddlers. My LO doesn't like the automatic flush (try to cover the sensor with a post it note or some toilet paper) and hand dryers. You can try going to a store that has a family bathroom first to test it out. My niece had issues using unfamiliar bathrooms, including my house. Sometimes it takes time, but I'm sure your LO will do well.

@Mrsbells: I usually just wipe it down with a baby wipe afterwards and clean it at home. If I use it as a full potty, there are bags that come with it. You can dump it in the toilet or just throw it in the trash.

It's this one: http://www.amazon.com/Kalencom-2-in-1-Potette-Plus-Red/dp/B0016KV73W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1411658242&sr=8-1&keywords=potette+potty

I keep it in the plastic drawstring bag it came in and it fits underneath the stroller. If I had to carry it in my purse it would be weird, though.

I bought a portable potty that I keep in the storage basket of the stroller. The one I have you can use as its own little potty or you can use to put over the seat in a public restroom. If the toilets are too gross, I usually just use it as a little potty on the floor.

Potty training outside the house

My 2.5 year old daughter is in the process of being potty trained. She goes to daycare and wears a diaper at daycare but she does go on the potty at daycare. When she comes home we take off the diaper and she wears regular underwear with a vinyl cover. She hasn’t had any accidents in a couple of days and always tells me when she wants to go. I am just not sure how to transition this to outside the home? Because now every time we are in the car she tells me she wants to go on the potty. I have her diaper on her when we go out but I want to eliminate the diaper for outside trips, but then I feel like a nervous wreck worrying if we will make it to the nearest bathroom or not. I also do not like public bathrooms for her since they are icky and I don’t want her sitting on the seat? My friend carries her sons potty everywhere to deal with this issue but my daughter doesn’t have an actual potty just a potty seat that goes over the toilet. How do you guys manage?
