@autumn865: thank you so much! I definitely don't want to push too hard, as he can be VERY stubborn...

@birdofafeather: so on Monday, I tried to get a little more intense about PT--we were diaper free for about 3 hours in the morning at home. He did REALLY well for the first 2 hours--peed in the potty when I asked, and even caught himself needing to go twice, and went in the potty. But after that, for some reason, he just got oppositional about it and didn't want anything to do with the potty. Any then I put a "special" pull up on him (with cars on it) and he peed in it IMMEDIATELY. So I think 1) we are going to slow down with it, and just do some diaper free time every day for now, and 2) not use pull ups and just go straight to underwear, because I think they must feel very similar to diapers to LO. Good luck! How are you guys doing?

Thought I would give my two cents about our experience this weekend with the 3 day method and my strong willed 25 month old. Overall I wouldn't say it was a complete fail because she did have some successes but overall I would say it didn't work for us. She was showing all sorts of signs (interest in others going potty), not wanting to be in a dirty diaper, etc). The first day we were completely bottomless and had some little successes but it was all tiny drops only with some big accidents. After awhile she seemed to not really care if she was peeing all over herself and would just go and keep going not saying a peep (we were stepping in pee everywhere and cleaning constantly). I in the pm set a timer for 10 minutes and she would sit with no success. On day two she wouldn't even sit on the potty easily. She would yell at it, slam the lid and kick it saying "go away!" At one point I got her to sit and she sat for 40 minutes with nothing, finally got up and it was a waterfall less than 5 minutes later. On day two she had less successes, more accidents and was outrightly refusing to even sit on the potty by the end of the day. Day three turned into epic tantrums at the mere mention of potty. Now at midday I am pulling the plug after no success at all by day three. So that's my experience! So just wanted to let you know I had 100% faith in the three day method and followed it to a T but it doesn't always work out. I think we will slow things down and still encourage the potty but I have no trouble bringing out the pull ups to let life continue on. I don't want potty training to turn into the power struggle it was and maybe a gentler more gradual method would work better for us with such an independent and strong willed toddler like mine. Good luck with your LO!

@hilsy85: I think yours seem to be more ready than mine when I started, and it doesn't hurt to try! Make sure you buy really cool underwear to begin with that he likes and would hate to mess it up!

For us, when we got home from daycare, I would lure him to use the potty, and sometimes he'd ask to use the potty. If he peed and pooped (which makes me feel comfortable that he'd probably be able to remain dry for a period of time), I'd let him choose between two underwear and let him wear it until bath time, which is about an hour or so. Remind him that since he is in underwear, he'd need to remain clean and dry and remember to use the potty. You don't have to do it every day to begin with, just start it out as a game and gradually increase the time.

And when he does have an accident, he would hate it and he would remember not to mess up his underwear again next time!

With our situation, I see potty training similar to the time when we introduced solids at 6 months. It is similar to how we go from 1 solid meal to 2 solid meal to 3 solid meal a day and so on...etc.

Good luck!!

@irene: that approach actually makes a LOT Of sense to me--like practicing with underwear instead of going cold turkey. DO you think that method would work on a younger child (LO is 22 months--he seems to be able to control his pee somewhat, as he makes himself pee when he's on the potty)?

- How did you know your LO was ready? How old was he/she?
He was never really ready but I pushed him. After a short weekend of wearing underwear and having tons of accidents at home, he suddenly realized he can control his pee and poop. We went from there. He was 2.5 years old sharp!

- what method did you use? Do you have any good websites/books that discuss this method?
No I didn't read any books and maybe that's the problem. The "modified" version of 3-day potty training did not work for us (well obviously I was too chicken to go bottomless, maybe that's why we weren't successful), but then LO wasn't really ready at that point when we tried. After that unsuccessful training bootcamp, I just let him wear underwear for a period of time every day. He had accidents and cried, but he slowly learned to control and would tell me when he needs to go. I gradually increase the underwear time every day.

- how long did it take til your LO was accident free and in underwear during the day (I plan on doing a diaper for naps and night for a while)
Haha! Still working on the "accident free" part but he is diaper free during daytime now. We'll just deal with it when there's an accident. Usually he has no accidents, only occasionally when he forgot he's in underwear.

- what would you have done differently?
I guess I probably would have skipped the "3-day" thing completely. I would have just start him with underwear for a period of a time every day and deal with the accidents if it happens. My friend said, it is really pointless to let potty training consume your life and ruin your perfectly good long weekend. And I truly agree.

@hilsy85: yup - we stayed home for 3 days but I know others will venture out the 2nd or 3rd day depending on the progress. If you read the babycenter article posted above you'll see they recommend just pants for awhile bc underwear can feel like diapers and cause regressions. I think the older the kid is the less likely that underwear will cause regression. We did pull ups - basically got rid of diapers bc I did not want that to be an option we called pull ups her "night night underwear" which was easy for her to distinguish bc she wore gdiapers before potty training. It sounds like your LO is ready and already has the concept down so it may be a super easy process for you! Good luck!

@hilsy85: we went for brunch that Sunday with some friends. We were there maybe 1.5 hours and made about 6 trips to the bathroom. I think he peed just once, but no accidents! I never did pull ups, we went straight to underwear. The first few weeks when we were out, I would always tell him that he was a big boy and mama didn't have any diapers, so if he had to go, he would have to tell me. It sounds like your little guy is ready! I would try since he's showing so many signs!

@sandy: so you did't go out at all that weekend?? I feel like I will go crazy being stuck at home...! when you say just pants, do you mean no undies or undies and pants?

I really feel like he is ready...he was having some diaper free time tonight, and I said, "remember if you need to pee, use your potty", and he ran over to it and used it twice in the next half hour!

Do you just jump straight to underwear or use pull ups? We're still in diapers now...

@hilsy85: i did the 3 day bottomless and followed the baby center website. Two days of accidents - totally walking up to potty and using it for pee/poo on day 3. So worth the long weekend stuck at home. We did just pants for about a month when we went out of the house. At home we we kept her bottomless for about 3 weeks. I think some kids just take longer than others to listen to their bodies to it can take up to 3 months but I know others were in pants within a week at home too.

We didn't have any signs of readiness other than she was the right age (24 months) and I wanted to try. I have no regrets and think the 3 day method is awesome!

- How did you know your LO was ready? How old was he/she?
He wasn't but we were. He wasn't showing any signs of interest. He was 30 months when we trained him.

- what method did you use? Do you have any good websites/books that discuss this method?
A spin off of the 3 day method. We did no pants in the house for a weekend. I bought some fun juices and flavored waters that he normally doesn't get and let him suck those down. Then we asked him every 15 min if he had to go or wanted to try. We had both a potty chair and the toilet seat (baby Bjorn), and he was more interested in the toilet seat. He got m&ms as a reward. I also looked at a bunch of HB archives and a few of the blog posts on potty training and they were all really helpful.

- how long did it take til your LO was accident free and in underwear during the day (I plan on doing a diaper for naps and night for a while)
Accident free in underwear was within 3 days, with a caveat. I sent him to school that Monday in underwear. He had one pee accident Monday and one poop accident Tuesday and after that, no more accidents! The caveat is that he did and does still have an occasional accident. I was still nervous the first few weeks when we would be out, but he was more or less trained from that first weekend.

- what would you have done differently?
I would maybe have started a few months earlier, but life got in the way. Overall, I was extremely pleased with how well it went.

DD1 was 22 months when she got potty trained. She would say when she was pooping or peeing. We had a rainy weekend with no plans so I decided to do the 3-day training. It took about 5 days total with it getting worse before it got better. Good luck!

I have about a million questions about potty training. LO is 22 months and showing a lot of interest in the potty, asks to sit on it and will pee on it maybe 2x a day, and also keeps asking to take his diapers off. Maybe he's ready? (I don't think I am....)
