That actually doesn't sound so terrible! DH and I are certain that DS "gets it" but he still refuses to use the potty so we were considering some kind of negative reinforcement if nothing else worked. I don't really want to go there if we don't have to though, it would be a last resort!

This will probably sound terrible but it worked. When DS pooped in his underwear (after his initial weeks of training) we would rinse him off with a cold shower. We were having tons of problems with him pooping on his underwear or starting in his underwear and not responding to positive reinforcement. So I tried this out of desperation and after a few times we rarely have poop accidents. Pee is another matter.

@Modern Daisy: If you do read the book, don't be scared about her doom and gloom message about doing it in the exact right window. Good luck!

@Adira: I really hope you are wrong but there is a good chance you are right. As badly as I want him trained I suspect he might not be ready. I think we might try the oh crap method then make a judgement call.

@looch: he has a seat to use my toilet and I think his feet do reach the step stool. He also has the regular portable floor potty, he uses both just fine just won't tell us when he has to go. The training pants are a great idea!

I've potty trained one whole girl, so I'm an expert. :silly:
We basically followed the Oh Crap method (summarized on Lucie's List)- bottomless first day, commando second day, then undies. But we have hard wood floors and rolled up the rugs for the weekend! I do think most kids get it a lot faster when they aren't wearing a diaper.

Eta: I had her wear a swim diaper for a few more weeks just in case but never had a problem.

Gosh, I would do a few things...

1. what kind of potty seat is it that he picked out? does he have the ability to have his feet flat on the floor while using it? If not, look into that, especially if he's pooping in a diaper while standing up. Could be that he is having trouble going on the seat you have.

2. I would also look at training pants that have a layer of PUL in them, rather than just plain underwear, if you think he's not really going to be motivated by having regular underwear.

3. I think he's doing great by going on timed intervals, that's a big step and maybe for now, that's what he is ready to do. I am not a fan of all or nothing approaches, they never motivate my son and he also doesn't respond to the traditional incentives...he has to do it on his own time.

@Modern Daisy: We did OCPT and only use pull-ups for nights and naps. H has only pooped in her panties once, and that was the third day of training. We lost that pair, but we haven't had any issues since then. I also think maybe you should drive around with a small potty in your car. We do and it's been a lifesaver, especially if H was scared of the potty in a store or it was just a port-o-potty.

I am in the midst of potty training at our house. DD is 2y8m and we went straight to underwear. It's worked!! Only 2 accidents, one while really tired and one while playing hard and she just forgot. I was planning to do diaper/pull up for nap and bedtime but she refuses so we've been underwear for both of those as well and believe it or not NO accidents during nap or over night.

Our issue is poop as well. As of now she refuses to go in the potty. She'll ask for a diaper to poop. So still a work in progress...

@Adira: I have not read any books, just going off advice from daycare and other parents. We read books with him though and he loves it! All of the other kids in his class are potty trained and it doesn't phase him. He has never cared about a messy diaper either and will not admit when he's pooped because he doesn't want to be changed.

@Modern Daisy: Have you tried reading Oh Crap! Potty Training? We followed that for the first blocks - going naked, going commando, wearing underwear. That worked pretty well for us. We use a pull-up for naps and nighttime only.

BUT I think potty training went pretty smoothly for us because Xander was the one to initiate it. He wanted to not wear a diaper because his friends were potty training at daycare, so it ended up being really easy for us since he was the one motivated to do it.

@Modern Daisy: Definitely expect some messes at the beginning - it's a learning process and a HUGE shift for littles. I found it useful to carry a ziplock bag with a spare change of clothes in my car, and also in my bag when we were out and about. But, it was like night and day when we went from pull-ups to undies! Good luck!

@yoursilverlining: you are probably right, we haven't tried that because I've been too scared of a big mess in the house. I'm afraid he won't care about messing himself though.. Guess I won't know till I try!

My LO wouldn't fully potty train while still in a diaper or a pull-up; which makes sense since as they understand it, the diaper is where you go to the bathroom. Went to undies and that was a game-changer. I think it's relatively theoretical while there is still a diaper on them 24/7; it gets real when that is removed. Maybe something to try.

What are your best tips for potty training? I feel like I'm doing it all wrong. My son is 3 today (happy birthday!!) and he has been using the potty for months, but only when we tell him to. He does not tell us when he has to go and has never initiated potty time. We give him his favorite candy when he goes and I bring him to sit on the potty frequently during the day, but he will just push out some pee and a tiny poo, claim to be finished, then do a big poo in his diaper 10 minutes later. he also chose his own potty seat.

We've been floating along like this for a while but my breaking point was on Saturday when he pooped so bad in his swim diaper that we had to leave a party. It was his third poop of the morning and we had sat on the potty multiple times and talked about not pooping in the pool. He loves to poop in pools and it drives me crazy!!

Anyway, what am I doing wrong? We are only using positive reinforcement but he just doesn't care enough about praise and candy.
