@ShootingStar: DS is not self initiating at all yet but will sit on the potty when prompted (most of the time). I sent him to daycare in underwear today and he had 2 accidents. This afternoon at home he went on the potty consistently until just after dinner when I was encouraging him to try again and he refused before peeing his pants. So many ups and downs!

@ShootingStar: we had a good day overall. I brought her to the gym childcare and she pooped on the potty for them there! It’s mostly me suggesting she goes and then she sits on the potty and goes, she did pee when we were playing outside but it had been a while since I brought her to the potty and she knew and told me right away. But last night I realized she hadn’t had a single accident all day! So feeling pretty good.

I kind of feel like if I had waiting another month or two to potty train it may have gone faster and easier (she is just shy of 2 years 9 months). But since she starts preschool next week I figured it would be better to do it before. Who knows.

How is everyone else’s potty training going?

We had a mixed bag today. This morning we took the kids out to vote and DD was great and held it for a long time. But then she started crying for the potty and wouldn’t use the travel seat I brought. Multiple bathroom trips later with no success she ended up peering on the floor at the pediatrician 😂.

She didn’t use the potty at daycare, which I expected. At home she had an accident, then two self initiated pees (yay!), then an accident, lol. I let her have a popsicle tonight and I think it was over doing it on the liquids.

@ShootingStar: when my older daughter was recently potty trained, I can remember one doctors visit where she used the bathroom there 3 times, at least. It was extra awesome holding her up on the potty with the baby in the carrier in my chest. She pretty much always used it every time we went (which was often since we had a big string of illnesses). So I would just ask where it is when you get there and be ready to go there multiple times.

All right we ended the day on a good note. DD initiates before bath time and peed in the little potty. And the. As we were finishing up her bedtime routine she started yelling potty so I took her to the bathroom and a few minutes later she peed on the big potty. So maybe she’s finally getting it.

Unfortunately tomorrow will be a weird day, we have a per appt at 10 and then she’ll go to daycare. Idk what we’ll do if she starts yelling about potty at the dr’s office. We have a travel potty but so far she’s refused to use it.

@ShootingStar: yes my 5 year old is actually really helpful, when the little one refuses to sit and go, the big one goes first to show her and then usually she will do whatever her sister does. The worst is when she wakes up, she really doesn’t want to sit in thenpotty but she definitely has to. She starts preschool next week and I’m hoping she’s doing a lot better by then. This week we will be home all morning while big sister is in school and we are having work done in the house, so we should have plenty of practice.

@autumnleaves: Mixed bag today. Mostly I catch her as she starts and I get her on the potty. She was having a tough time all last night and this morning complaining that she needed to poop. She finally pooped in her nap diaper, which I expected. But then she was complaining again a little while after nap and I didn’t really take it seriously. Plus DS had FaceTimed my parents and there was a lot going on and we didn’t *quite* make to the potty. 💩 fell about 1 inch away from the potty 😂.

Tomorrow it’s back to daycare and she’s not ready for undies. 5 days in and she can’t really pee when prompted and when she self initiates nothing comes out. We’ll have to do pull ups (which I hate) but daycare won’t be able to deal with her in undies like this.

@Foodnerd81: One thing that worked with DS was having a routine. He didn’t self initiate for a LONG time. But we peed when he got up, before we left he house, as soon as we came in, etc. And we watched that Daniel Tiger episode a million times about “when you have to go potty stop and go right away.” You can also enlist your older daughter and regularly have “potty time” for the both of them.

@autumnleaves: did you try just loose shorts instead of underwear? Supposedly that helps because it feels less like a diaper.

I’m a full week in now and I’m finding if we are having a nice calm day without too many distractions, she will sometimes tell me she has to go, or will willingly go when I prompt. But if there is a lot going on it’s much harder. We went to a neighborhood party yesterday and she peed in their bathroom twice then pees in her underwear ten minutes later.

@ShootingStar: How is it going today? Today is Day 3 and I am feeling defeated. My son was running around half naked the first 2 days and I thought it went OK - there were accidents both days but he also was peeing and pooping in the potty. Today we tried training pants and he's having more accidents and becoming more resistant. I am trying to figure out if to call this a fail and put him back in diapers or to take a day off work tomorrow and see if we can make more progress. It is so hard.

@BadgerMom: good point. I admit I was just being lazy because books usually work for my LO but I was just so sick of reading books perched on a stool in our tiny bathroom. Letting them use the phone if it’s all the works is totally worth it.

We had a similar problem and I caved and let DS play one specific app on my phone, Elmo Calls. It was enough to keep him entertained for a few minutes and allowed him to relax, but it isn’t really something he wanted to play forever. In the beginning it was the only thing that would get him on the potty, and eventually after a couple weeks he lost interest and stopped asking for it, so it was totally worth it for us.

@ShootingStar: ugh. Sorry. I assume you’ve tried reading her books and stuff on the potty? I once let G watch a video on my phone to get her to stay on long enough to relax and pee, but then every time she was whining and asking for a video so it wasn’t really worth it. Potty training sucks.

@Foodnerd81: Not great. She holds it really well. But I still can’t get her to release on the potty. Yesterday was a disaster and now this morning she started peeing and stopped when I got her on the potty.

I’m just feeling pretty defeated at this point. I’ve tried all tricks to get her to pee and nothing’s worked. Back to no undies and lots of fluids and we’ll see how the rest of today goes.

@ShootingStar: how is it going now? We definitely back slid over this weekend- we went away overnight and she had more accidents than going in the potty- including pooping in her undies at a restaurant. Gross. I think it was too soon after training but what can you do? Things are hopefully back on track this morning after she peed and pooped in the potty!

@ShootingStar: All kids are different.. I think it does just click at some point. One of mine was day-trained in just a few days, and the other.. he's just getting to going in public and accident free days becoming the norm.. and it's a couple months in. GL, hope it continues to improve quickly! Anecdotally I do agree with the "boys are harder than girls" thing.

@Foodnerd81: Haha, mine was pressure washing the deck! And thank you, your post gives me hope for tomorrow.

@meadow: I told him tomorrow he could make himself useful and do something with DS. I told him I didn’t care what it was or how much it cost but that they need to go out somewhere tomorrow morning, lol. They decided they’re going to go see Christopher Robin.

Tonight actually went much better. We tried using Minnie Mouse undies as leverage to keep her dry and she did pretty good. After dinner she was giving me a funny look and crossing her legs so I put her on the potty and she ended up pooping. Two days of poop in a row! A while later DH saw her trying to pull off her undies so he took them off and put her on the potty and she peed. So I was really happy with how the day ended.

We did have a funny moment though. DH told me I never put a diaper on her for nap and so I thought I just be going crazy/stressed. Turns out she pulled it off and left it in her bed, lol. So I think we’re moving in the right direction.

Why is it that dads going to another planet during potty training? Hah. In my case I thought it was because I did all the research and planning and was invested in it and he was along for the ride. My DH couldn't get the idea that on day 1 you are on the kid like a hawk to try & catch the pee....he kept reading the news or FB on his phone!

@ShootingStar: we just potty trained my 2 y 9 m old daughter last weekend, and I was right there with you on day 2. Day 1 went great, day 2 it felt like nothing at all had stuck and she was doing worse and hardly got anything in the potty. And DH has been home but doing other crap, like- literally- deciding that was the day to powerwash the house. So we ended day two with me trying to get the 2 year old to pee but she couldn’t, then my 5 year old was going nuts and being loud and crazy, the 2 year old peeing on the floor then running to me because she was upset about it, slipping in the pee and screaming laying on the floor in her own pee, while I screamed “where the hell is daddy??!!?” Then day 3- it clicked. And it’s been sooooomuch better ever since.

So, fingers crossed tomorrow is the day it clicks for you.

I was going to start a thread about potty training over the long holiday weekend! DS is just a month over 3 yo and we are having a "potty party" today. He is running around bottomless (which he did not like at first). So far he won't tell us when he has to go but if I tell him he has to try before he can do something (watch TV, go outside etc.) he will sit down and pee.

He did pee a few times outside while running around despite having the potty near by and we are waiting for him to poop so we'll see how that goes.

No advice on also dealing with your DH and other LO just my sympathy because I know that is not making the process any easier on you. I am 36 weeks with baby #2 so decided this was our last opportunity to give DS all of our attention. DH has been distracted so I keep designating time for him to be in charge so I can take a break. He doesn't seem to really get it which is frustrating.

I agree with @Truth Bombs:

We waited until a few months before three with my son and went slowly (couple hours at a time with no diaper and worked our way longer). He never had accidents after the first couple days.

My daughter turned 2 in June and is asking to “party train??” But she also can’t figure out how to go so we are holding off until she gets it.

Both my kids potty trained about 3 months before they turned 3, and they both got progressively better each day, as opposed to back sliding. We actually just potty trained my son last weekend. On Saturday he had 3 pee accidents and one poop accident, on Sunday he had zero pee accidents and one poop accident, same on Monday. On Tuesday night he decided he was ready to poop in the potty, did it, and hasn't had any accidents for poop or pee since. So, I'm a big believer that when the kid is ready, potty training is pretty smooth. So if she's struggling and it's making you batty, I would probably take a break rather than push it too hard.

HUG - I was in your shoes last week! The first couple days were rough. One trick I found that worked for DD was that after her accident, I'd run her to the potty and then nothing would come out. I would tell her we would try again in 2 minutes. Then when we "took a break to go pee-pee" 2 minutes later she was calmed down and could release. I read somewhere that when they are startled by the feeling of an accident and you race to the potty - sometimes it acts like a brick wall and they can't go.

Sending you positive thoughts!! And I hope your DH kicks into gear!

I’m PT-ing my 2 year old DD this weekend and I’m losing my mind today. We’re on day two and it’s not going well. I know that typical for day two, but I’m in that stage where it feels like it’s never going to get better.

Yesterday actually went pretty great. She was in a good mood and after a few accidents in the morning, we had a great run in the afternoon where I’d catch a panicky expression on her face and stick her in the potty and she’d go. She even pooped in the potty yesterday.

But today it’s either been all complete accidents or she started peeing and I’d catch her mid pee and put her on the potty. My biggest struggle is getting her to learn how to release it. She can sit and sit and nothing.

It also doesn’t help that I now have two kids to deal with (day care is closed) so DS is driving me crazy and DH is home too and he wasn’t a huge amount of help this morning. Yesterday he worked from home but much help there either. Today he’s been distracted with his computer or doing something else because he thinks the kids are being fine. And then we had a pest control guy we hired show up, so he’s outside with him while the dog’s barking nonstop, DS is complaining about something, and DD is whining and crying and having accidents.

So someone help me remember, does learning to release it just click after a couple days?
