I’m with @Mrsbells: on this one. We did commando and then undies at home but daycare wanted pull-ups until he was dry. So I would put a pull up on him in the morning and take it off when we got home. I don’t think it delayed us at home one bit. We had the time and energy to be vigilant at home and remind him to go which they don’t really have at daycare. I do think it probably made things a little slower at school but I didn’t care, it was their deal, and when he was with me he was doing well. So I guess I wouldn’t totally be worried about trying two different approaches until it proves to be an actual problem.

My DS is consistently having accidents at school but doing well at home because we prompt him to go and watch for his cues. The daycare is setting a timer to take him to the potty every hour but today he sat for a long time then peed in his pants a few minutes later.

I'm going to do underwear again tomorrow but since he is not aware or not willing to verbalize when he needs to go I'm wondering if we should switch to pull ups at daycare while having him sit on the potty regularly?

@Mrsbells: I'm thinking this might be the way to go for us but trying to be patient.

@polkaspots: I am in the minority but pull ups didnt have a major effect on our progress. We called them panties and she wore them to school and to bed at night and then wore regular underwear at home during the day.

I spent Labor Day weekend training LO2 with OCPT too!

This time I was determined to not use pull ups, but that didn't happen 🙁. DS is 4 (5 in November) and I started training him at 2.25. I did OCPT then and daycare seemed horrified that I'd send him without pull ups, and said they're not equipped to handle it if there's too many potty accidents in the toddler room. I loved the teachers there so even though I hated this policy I went with it.

I did feel like in retrospect it slowed down his PT-ing. But we also got really lazy with the pull ups, and I'm trying not to this time. After a few weeks we decided to get more serious with it and when DS made it through a whole weekend without an accident I took him to daycare and informed them he was now going to be wearing undies. We trained him over President's Day weekend in February and I remember thinking that if it didn't work we'd do it again Memorial Day. But we didn't need to, he was fairly consistent by then.

With DD I guess I kind of thought that with a longer weekend (5 days vs 3 with DS) and more dedication (no pull ups just because I wanted to leave the house!) she'd be ready for undies by the end. Well...I was way over optimistic, which you can see if you read the thread I created :silly: .

I now plan to do essentially what I did for DS - send her to daycare in pull ups and have them take her regularly to the potty. She's not there at all with peeing on command though. In the last couple days we finally got to "I need to pee" which takes 3 or 4 potty tries before she goes. When she comes home we take off the pull up and let her bottomless (been wearing dresses all week). Hopefully over the next couple weeks more of it will click.

So yesterday LO had several accidents and this morning I had a chance to talk to the teacher. She said he never told her he had to go.

🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

I’ve told her several times he’s just not there yet. Take him consistently and he’ll go. She says technically they’re only scheduled to go once a day because they’re just introducing the potty in her room but if someone says they need to go, they’ll take that child. I told her to take him whenever that other kid says they need to go.

They want him in pull ups until he can tell them. I feel like this is a step back and may hinder his progress. I’m considering trying to negotiate for training pants, the underwear with the thicker lining, because I feel like they’re just not going to take him if he’s in pull-ups.

Anyone have luck using those?

@polkaspots: first of all that is great progress for your lo! Try to keep that in mind...

Second, our daycare was very specific about communicating in advance prior to sending a child in underwear. With both my kids I checked in with the teachers and warned them when we were going to do weekend boot camp and that they should expect him in underwear the next week. We talked about extra clothes etc.

I wonder if they were partly surprised by the lack of advanced notice. My son’s class liked to rotate so that there were only a couple newly in undies at once. I would just talk to them about how to proceed. We also are expected to take lo to the potty and wash hands at drop off and we did that for a while to prep too. Good luck!

We started potty training over the weekend. I sent DS in underwear and shorts to school today and he had 2 accidents. When my husband picked him up they just said to send more underwear and clothes tomorrow. They understand he is potty training and seem willing to work with us. I need to find out how many times they had him try today because he does not initiate yet and needs to be prompted often.

I did sent pull ups for nap time though.

@polkaspots: I can relate to the potty training frustrations - I tried to train DS2 (2 years 4 months) this weekend - I wasn't in a hurry initially either but then thought with daycare not happy with his diapers and not having big plans for the next month that I should try this weekend. I am so happy not to be spending all my time in the bathroom today cleaning up pee.
I mentioned it to daycare on Friday but over the weekend I realized I should have had a bigger conversation with them about what he could come back to school in. Yesterday I found out that one of his teachers left recently and with all the accidents at home and his frustration, I decided to send him in diapers not wanting his primary teacher to have a harder week than she may already be having. I talked with his primary teacher today and she said she would be OK with just shorts and no underpants or diapers and she'll put him on the potty moving forward and see what happens. She said she prefers shorts so he can pull them down himself.
Our last daycare said DS1 needed to return in diapers, pullups, or underpants so he we had him in underpants after training him at home over Memorial Day last year.
At my last daycare, there were a lot less kids and I think they took DS1 8 times a day or so depending on if he had gone or not gone before before after meals and going outside as well a other times - if he was overdue to pee- they would go every 15 minutes I believe.

Our old daycare - they had to be in pull ups until they were consistently dry no matter how old they were.

Our new daycare - in pull ups while in the 2's class and once they move up to 3's we can send in underwear. They know kids have accidents so they just make sure we bring in plenty of extra clothes.

@wrkbrk: I called them to check on him and they took him twice but he wouldn’t pee for them. I think I might need to take him tomorrow morning just to get him used to the idea. They put him in a diaper for nap because he hadn’t peed all morning. Fair enough but I asked that they take him to the potty when he gets up.

I brought my daughter into daycare after three days of the OCPT method with shorts and underwear. I should have asked them in advance-they want pull ups too at first. Luckily they agreed to work with us and not do pull ups as long as she didn't have many accidents.

@polkaspots: So we have a totally different situation but I decided just to give in and do it daycares way so we didn’t have a constant battle. Daycares way = nothing until they move up rooms. DS’s room now is 3-3 and 9 months or so. He’s 3 in November but I won’t get into all of that now (see my last post 😡). They take them all 4 times a day and expect them to st least pee. All other times they are in pull ups. Until they are consistently dry at daycare for about a month, then they tell us to send them in undies. After an OCPT disaster and worrying that the pull-ups would just confuse my DS I gave up and it’s working (knock on wood) for now. He’s dry most of the day and goes on the potty every time we ask. He isn’t intiating at all yet but I’m not rocking the boat lol.

I just need to vent about potty training. I’m more of a lurker than a regular poster, but I’m hoping for some commiseration/advice/virtual wine 🤪

My LO just turned two, like a couple weeks ago. He moved into the small twos classroom at daycare. Life was good and potty training was nowhere near the forefront of my mind. I felt like I was in potty training hell with my first for nearly a year and I wasn’t looking to go back for awhile.

I started around 2.5 with my older son, using OCPT. It worked like a charm after a very loooooong Labor Day weekend of potty training. He went to a different daycare and they were fairly supportive. He was mostly potty trained until he transitioned to the three year old room. He had a lot of transitions around that time and it was just a mess. Also about the time, we had LO2. I’d say around 3.5, he was finally to a point we considered him potty trained (self-initiating, very rarely having accidents, etc.).

Sooooo I was in no hurry to potty train my second because ugh. I pick him up on Friday and daycare is like “he’s been doing great here, going on the potty, his diapers are staying dry, etc.” so I felt like hmmm maybe I should use this Labor Day weekend to do OCPT and roll with this, since the author is all about 2-2.5 being the best window and he’s showing so much interest.

Well, I tried. OCPT with another kiddo underfoot is kind of hard and DH wasn’t really on board. We also had events this weekend (I know, I know, I read the book but there’s never going to be a time when I don’t have events given that I have more than one kid).

So, LO ran around naked and went from clueless to I peed to I have to go pee. Nowhere near fully potty trained of course, but a lot of progress (also a lot of cleaning up pee but such is parenthood).

I bring him to school in underwear and shorts (loose boxers because my experience with daycare has been that they get really squiggly about commando, so it’s a nice compromise). They freak out and say they’re not sure about taking him to the potty every 30min to an hour.

Ugh. Just ugh.

I feel like maybe this isn’t how most people potty train? They seemed surprised he wasn’t in pull-ups. How did you potty train? What was your daycare’s reaction? When did you potty train? How long did it take?
