@hummusgirl: That's interesting. Kind of wish I hadn't given her the panties now. She did great yesterday -- no pee accidents at all! But she keeps pooping in her undies. I assume it's because it feels the same as a diaper. However, she really LOVES her undies, so I'm considering throwing away undies with poop in them. Maybe if she can't have them back if she poops in them, it will motivate her. @tysonja: Thank you! Always nice to hear something other than "LO had one accident at 22 months and never again!" It's hard to relate when you're in the pee filled trenches.

No experience yet since we've been procrastinating but are planning to start in the next couple weeks (LO will be 3 in September). However I just read this book "Oh Crap! Potty Training" and she says to not wear underwear for the first month - apparently accidents in pants are more uncomfortable than in underwear where they're still somewhat contained. It was a quick read and has some troubleshooting tips for regressions.

we did the 3 day method back in feb (just over 2.5) and it went pretty well -- no aversions to the potty, no holding pee or poop, excited to use the potty etc. in the next few weeks it just kept slipping and slipping... he REALLY doesn't mind being wet or dirty or gross in any way ;). we got to the point where he pooped in his underwear every day, and peed most of the time on the floor. we tried a whole bunch of things but in the end just kept reminding, lots of positive reinforcement when he went to the potty, and rewards. one day out of the blue (2 weeks ago, 6 weeks after he turned 3), he just got it and never had an accident again. it was NOT gradual at all, and it seemed like he 'made up his mind'. it coincided with a pretty obvious mental growth spurt in the same 2 weeks.

anyway, all to say, maybe we did something wrong, maybe we didn't -- I don't regret starting in feb, and wish it didn't take so long, but i'm glad we are here, now! :)

good luck to you! :)

@BlueWolverine: I know, right?!? Miss Amy is my favourite EVER! We've had nothing but amazing experiences with the daycare staff, but Miss Amy had my LO figured out in a week. She's incredible.

Ha!
Third time's a charm ;)

So attempt #1: (3 day method). She got pneumonia. Not that she was doing well anyhow. Decided to wait awhile longer. (Age ~26-27 months)

Attempt #2: went okay for the three days. Decided to send her to daycare Monday in underwear and announce that she's potty trained. Tuesday night at pickup, daycare says they've put her back in diapers and she will remain in diapers for the foreseeable future. Fair decision. Every time she had to go potty there was so much crying and screaming. Nobody was happy. (Age ~33 months)

Gave up. Mother in law told me when she was ready, she just would do it. I was in total disbelief but cleaning poop out of underwear sucks. So I went with it.

~ 37 months, daycare announces it's time for her to be potty trained. Date is set. Underwear and pants are stocked up at daycare. Day one. Disaster. Daycare room leader is optimistic about the next day. We forge ahead! Day two is somewhat better. Day three LO appears to decide that daycare room leader will not be beaten. She submits. Huzzah! Hardly any accidents.

As you can see, I can take absolutely no credit and I have no advice to give! Just know, no child ever graduated high school in diapers!

We've been working on it for six months and are just climbing out of a refusal / regression phase brought on by the arrival of our new baby in April. My big girl is 32 months and had been successfully using the potty once a day since she was about sixteen months and she chose to start wearing undies in January this year. She did really well until April / May and she ended up back in nappies for almost two weeks before she decided she was happy to use the toilet again. It's been a long and frustrating process because I know that she knows how to do it however I think part of her refusal / regression was her way of asserting her independence and control.

Somebody once told me that for a lot of families, kids who have "successfully" trained at an early age have actually just trained their parents to remind them and take them to the toilet!

I'm looking for some real world experience on this one. We did the 3 day method with LO over the weekend (she's 2.5). Days one and two were rough, but on Sunday she only had one accident and stayed dry during nap. We were feeling great! She even pooped on the potty Saturday afternoon. We committed a probable tactical error in taking her out to our friend's house for dinner. She had 3 accidents there (the friend didn't mind as they have young kids, but still).

So, today at day care, she had two accidents, one of which involved poop. Then she peed on the floor at home. I keep reading that so many kids make it through the 3 day weekend and it's smooth sailing. That so didn't happen here. She doesn't want to give up her big girl panties and announces when she's peeing, so I feel like she's ready. Even when she has pooped in her undies, she immediately announces it.

So, what was your story? Even better if it wasn't perfect. I'm looking for hope here because even though it's only been four days, I'm exhausted.
