My lo is in the middle of potty training, and my thinking on what "ready" means has really been changing. He was interested in undies and his teachers thought he was ready, so we started about a week ago. For the first few days, we took him to the potty at regular, close intervals; he was initially successful but then started only peeing in his pants and really resisting the potty. We were ready to give up, but his teachers were encouraging and were willing to deal with wet undies at school. So we backed off on the regular potty visits and changed a lot of wet pants :( But, after a few days, he has started sometimes going to the potty on his own and now recognizes when he is peeing. It might still not work out, but it definitely feels like we are making progress.

All of this to say: it seems very reasonable that your LO needs some time to figure out the feeling of having to pee. Some kids obviously figure it out quickly, but I don't think that needing time to figure this out automatically means that a kid isn't ready to use the toilet.

@Mrs. Carrot: nope, 1-3 weeks! I mean, you go about your regular business, they just don't wear underwear underneath their pants. I sent my LO to daycare without panties and she didn't have accidents at all--her teachers were shocked. I explained in the morning that we were trying a method wear they wear pants and not panties--and they seemed dubious at first, but when I picked her up, they said they thought it was great because she could get her pants up and down more easily without worrying about the panties.

I think that's a great start. We were in a similar place the first few days and it clicked around day 4 I think? You just have to give it time but it sounds like she's ready.

@Anagram: You mean commando for 1-3 days, right? Because oh man, 3 weeks!

This makes total sense. I was a little put off by Oh Crap's aggressive approach but I think the sentiment is right.

DD1 "got it" at day five right when I was ready to call it a fail. Before that point she didn't have accidents, but was needing promoting regularly to use the potty. She figured it out literally over night.
I'd stick with it for a while longer. It sounds like she's making a great start.

So...you know there are different "methods" and beliefs about potty training, but I did the Oh Crap method and it was very clear that kids learning that feeling and being able to tell you way in advance comes later...like, 2-3 weeks later.

So first, by going bottomless, they learn the direct connection between peeing/pooping and it hitting their legs/the floor. So after a day or 5 (haaha, but every kid is different), then they connect that immediate cause-effect to sitting on a toilet. However, at that point, it's still largely true that they don't realize they have to go until it's "emergency status", and that's why you keep them commando for 1-3 weeks, so they don't have the close-to-the-skin feeling underwear gives, because it's too close to the feeling of a diaper, and they will continue to pee/poop in the underwear reflexively.

After the first few days, the kiddos get better at knowing they have to go AT THAT MOMENT, and then within a week or two, they become aware they need to go within 10-15 minutes of the emergency time period, and then a week or two after that, they totally get it and you (usually) don't even have to remind them to go, and they initiate it.

But initiating comes much later.

So my daughter followed this very typically (I'm sure not all kids do), and she started initiating everything on her own in about week 3, 2 weeks after she stopped having accidents. Up until that point, I just watched her for signs and put her on the potty when she needed to go, but I was really careful not to put her on the potty constantly--I think that makes some kids rebel.

My 32 month old is in a weird (to me) place with potty training. About a month ago, she started wanting to sit on the potty all the time. As far as I could tell, it had nothing to do with needing to go - she seemed to love sitting there and reading books, and she would get supremely excited when she would pee, which would be about 50/50. We asked daycare to start putting her on the potty, still keeping her in pull ups, and she was fine there but nothing would happen, and at home it would be sporadic.

While snowed in last weekend, we decided to try actually potty training. She picked out her own big girl underwear and ran around the house in them for the day. No accidents at all, and we would have her sit on the potty every 30 minutes-1 hour, and usually she would go when we sat her down. The only time she refused was when she had to poop - she has a very specific "concentrate and hide away" process and wouldn't poop until we gave her a diaper. What I didn't see, however, is any recognition of what it means to "have to go." So we went back to pull ups and doing regular sits.

I'm not sure what this all means. Since she's not recognizing that she has to go, does that mean she's not ready? Should we push harder on actual training? She has a hard time stopping whatever she's doing to actually go, so sometimes it becomes a fight to even get her to take a break. She's not resisting the potty at all, but that "need to go" thing isn't clicking.

Thoughts? I'm not in a huge rush but I would ideally love to get this kid trained so that we can move her to the 3s room at daycare in June, where they require that they're mostly trained.
