We had a similar age gap and trained DS right at 2.5 years (baby was due right before he turned 3). Even though he was solidly trained by the time DD was born, he still had some regressions for a few weeks after the birth. I would probably do it earlier rather than later.

@Mrs. Confetti: Thanks! I can't wait to read it. I think that's probably exactly what we'll do. He's "giving" his pacifiers to Santa for Christmas, so I don't want to do anything then, but I think we will really go for it in January or February.

@SeptMomma12: Mine will also have the same age gap (2 yrs 8 months) and we just potty trained this weekend, just a bit less than 2 months before my due date. We were hoping to do it sooner, but it just didn't work the first time we tried.

I'm just finishing a post about it that will go up on the HB blog, but basically, I would say GO FOR IT, especially if he's showing any signs of readiness. At the worst, it won't work, you'll scrap it and go back to diapers, no harm no foul. At best, you succeed, have a couple good months, a few weeks of regression, and then you aren't potty training while in the weeds with 2 kids.

Great thread.

Am thinking of the same worries. My LO will be 2 yr 7 m when newborn arrives in May. But he is totally not interested in potty. Other than sitting on them ( we have two) before bath time and then proceeding to pee in the tub! He is often in denial that he pooped so we may be far from ready. I hear boys often start layer than girls?

@Keppa: Haha. Me too! I am totally not looking forward to it at all.

@HappyBaker: Thank you! That was really helpful. I tried searching but nothing came up.

I asked a similar question a few months ago and got some great responses - here's that thread:
http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/potty-training-how-close-to-new-siblings-birth-is-too-close

For us we decided not to potty train just because she has still only peed on the potty twice and doesn't seem super interested in it. Also I feel WAY too pregnant to deal with it at this point so I'm glad we decided not to!

Good question! DS will be 2y9m when our 2nd arrives in May and I've been questioning this a lot! DS goes potty (just pee) every night before bed, but only because it's become part of our routine. Getting him to do it during the day is hit or miss (mostly miss) as he's not interested unless really pressed. He has started hiding when he has to poop, which I've been told is one of the signs he might be ready. Haha I think part of me its putting it off because it sounds exhausting to do :)

@SeptMomma12: just 20 months, I think he's too little. Daycare will probably train around 2 (sept) and I'm totally ok with that; she does a version kind of like the 3 day method every 15 minutes for the first 2 days etc . MIL is insistent he'll be trained before LO2, I just think he's too little. Daycare lady said she'd attempt training in Jan/Feb IF he showed any signs of being ready

@regberadaisy: In this classroom, they will only help if he specifically asks to use the potty. But he would have to ask. They won't do the scheduled "go to the potty as a group" until the next class in March. I think maybe we will start to encourage it a bit more over the next month or so and see how he does. Happy to hear about all these kids who didn't really regress

We are about the same age gap (31 months). Started toilet training LO1 at the beginning of September, expecting LO2 at the end of November. So far no regression, but it hasn't quite been 2 weeks since LO2's arrival so maybe it's still lurking... :)

We were loosely training her for quite a few months then really made a push about 1-2m before DD 2 arrived. DD 1 didn't regress! I was afraid too. :) they're 28m apart.

Not having to change two diapers is the best. But of course you swap that with taking them potty. :silly:

Will daycare help if you decide to start?

@jetsa: How old will your LO be when the baby comes in May?

@Andrea: Thats really good to hear, thanks! All anyone seems to tell me is that he will regress.

I have almost the same age gap and we potty trained DD1 a month before DD2's arrival. Everyone told me that she would regress, but she didn't at all. Of course it could go either way, but not all kids regress despite what most people think ...

I asked my daycare lady the same question and she said she thought if we trained in Jan or early Feb then it'd stick anything later than that and there would be a huge regression. She said even in Jan there'd probably be a small regression.

DS will be 2 years 8 months (so 32 months) when baby arrives in May. He's scheduled to move to the classroom at day care where they start potty training in March, which is probably awful timing considering his world is about to flip upside down in 2 months. How did you handle potty training if your kids were 2.5-3 years apart? I'm concerned if we do it before the baby comes, he will regress and we lose everything we did. But I'm also not sure if pushing it back to 3 or later (assuming we would wait a few months after baby comes) is good either. Or maybe I'm just overthinking it, which is entirely possible as well ;)

He's showing limited signs he's ready - tells us when he's pooping and has asked to sit on the potty a couple of times (but never actually used it) - but I wouldn't say he's pushing for it at all.

Any advice?
