Our lactation consultant told us to boil it (the ready to eat formula is sterile, but the powdered stuff is not). ... We bring the formula & water to a boil in the pot, then remove it from the heat. We then transfer it to glass bottles & let them cool for 15 minutes before putting in the fridge.

The powdered smells different from the ready made. Many of the british powdered formula has fish oil in it, which smells gross!
Which formula are you using?

When we were over there, I boiled water in the electric kettle and then let it cool on the countertop.
I mixed it with the formula, and never heated bottles.

I used aptimil comfort.

We used tap water from the start. Really no need to boil.

But yeah, the powdered stuff does smell different from the ready made.

@illumina: my advice appears to be wrong. Looch knows better, in the US we just use jugs of nursery water, you can buy them at any grocery store. good luck!

@jetsa: @tysonja: I used freshly boiled because it said so on the instructions...do you think as she's almost 5mths that I could use tap water then?

I was advised to boil the water, then let it cool down (Continental Europe), as the water isn't treated with chlorine, but ozone.

So, I boiled it an electric kettle with an external heating element and then poured it into a glass pitcher to cool. Then I portioned it into bottles and warmed up the water before feeding. When the water was warm, I added the powder.

@illumina: hmm not sure about that... i always use cooled down boiled water, or after they are a few months old, i just use cold tap water and shake. i let all the bubbles settle in the fridge before feeding him :)

When LO took formula, we used distilled water for it. Powdered formula smells gross to begin with. You might not be used to the smell as well.

Now we are giving LO more formula we have gone from using the ready made stuff to the powder that comes in a big tub. I think I must be doing something wrong in preparing it because it smells and tastes funny and not like the other stuff. I've tried leaving the boiled water in the kettle for 30mins, then putting in the bottle and mixing and also pouring the boiled water straight into the bottle and leaving it there for 30mins before mixing and both ways smell weird.

Help!
