I suspect length and frequency is contributing to your decreasing supply even if though the third session (or extra 20-15m/session) isn't resulting in a big output gain for that particular day.

I get 95%+ of what I can pump in the first 17 minutes. But, unless I keep going until the 25 minute mark, my supply starts falling off.

Likewise when I dropped from three pumps per day down to two pumps per day at work, my immediate decrease output was about 2 oz a day, but, I had to add in a morning session because it kept going down more and more until I added a session back.

I am impressed (and jealous!) that your 5 mo old goes so long between feedings. My LO (now 15 months) never stretched more than 2.5 hours

Good luck! I have this same question/problem. I am also considering a hand expression class. http://www.themilkinmama.com/workshops/eveningonlineworkshop
I have heard good things, I'll let you know how it works/helps if I end up doing it.

Have you tried pumping longer? I don't know how it works, most of my mom friends could easily pump in 10-15 minutes but I needed 30 minutes. I had a great supply it just took a long time to get it all out.

Also, I sometimes pumped around 10 pm and got an extra 2-4 oz

Good luck

I power pumped at night before bed watching an hourlong show - 20 minute pump, then 10 minute rest, then 10 on and 10 off and 10 on. I drank a beer and ate a Nature Valley crunchy granola bar while doing it. I found doing it 2 nights was good and I started producing more about 2 days later. So I'd do it on the weekend and then expect a boost by Wednesday of that week.

@Mrs D: Always less than a week. And I would add in a protein based snack and an extra glass or two of water somewhere with the theory that it won't hurt!

@mrswin: my pumping schedule mirrors Emily's nursing schedule...plus when I was doing 3 sessions at work (which is quite difficult to fit into our schedule in the mothers room) my output per session decreased...I went basically from getting 7-7.5 oz in 2 sessions to maybe 8 oz in 3 sessions...

When I gave up the third session at work is when I added the morning session! And I do pump before bed since she gets formula whe. I put her down...

@PawPrints: if only seems to get me 1 more oz total...I would completely do it if I got a whole 3-3.5 oz from it but it's just not worth 1 oz for the time commitment and the havoc it will wreck on our schedule (4 moms trying to use one room)...

@MrsSRS: how many days would it take for your supply to get back to normal?

I agree, I'd shift your schedule so you are doing three pumps between 9am-3:30pm. That will probably help you a lot, and you won't need to worry about power pumping. Power pumping is kind of exhausting and intense.

I power pumped every evening until my supply was back where I wanted it to be. The easiest way to do it, for me, was to watch a show that lasted an hour and pump when it was on and not pump during commercials. That was back when we actually watched tv with commercials...so now if probably netflix and use a timer for 10-12 on, 3-5 off, and do 4 cycles.

@Mrs D: could you do a session at 9:30/12:30/3:30? You might also add a quick 10 minute session before you go to bed..

@Mrs D: I think going 4 hours between sessions may be part of the problem. What does nursing look like when you are home on the weekend? I had over supply but noticed a drop when I went from 3hour between sessions to 4 hours

So...I'm starting to notice issues with my supply (I have dropped from 4oz a session to now sometimes below 3oz a session)...not sure if its because my cycle is starting back up maybe?, I am super stressed, I'm sick...or what - maybe all of the above! But anyways DD is 5 mos old tomorrow. I have already made it longer than I did with DD1 which I am thrilled about. But I would like to push through...

Current State-
Diet: No recent changes
Water Intake: No recent changes
Current Nursing: First thing (AM) around 6/6:30am usually; after work around 6-7pm. She nurses for about 5-8min per side.
Current Bottles: two 6oz bottles of BM at daycare (10:30am and 2:30pm); one 8oz bottle of formula before bed.
Current Pumping: AM (either before she wakes or right before I leave for work if she was up early), 10:30am (15 mins - 3oz), 2:30pm (15 mins - barely 3 oz), before bed (15 mins - 3/3.5 oz). My morning session output depends...if she was up early and I am pumping after her nursing I usually get 1.5-2oz; however if I get up and pump around 5am I get 4oz then stop so I dont diminish what she gets at 6/630.

I just started taking Fenugreek and Blessed Thistle. I am also taking 2 drops of Fennel Oil a day.

I am thinking of adding a power pumping session...I have the following questions:
1) How often do you do these? Everyday for a few days or indefinitely?
2) Would you do the power pumping at 12:30pm-1:30pm and bump my last pumping session at work to 3:30pm? Or would you do it at nighttime before I go to bed? I am thinking of waking up at 3 or 4am so I can get a full session in and not be worried about her quantity.

Ok - would love input on power pumping...and any other constructive critiques of my current situation!
