It is a wonderful, but damaged, city, and its people deserve better than they have been getting - better than vandalism and rioting, better than police brutality, better than failing schools and abandoned neighborhoods. It will be a shame if this story becomes just about the crimes committed last night, and not about the issues behind them.</p> <p>Thank you to those of you expressing concern. The city has its problems, but it is still a great place with great people. I live 40 min out of town, so I haven't been affected that way, but I work in the city, blocks from the fires and rioting. It took me forever to get home last night and all night my phone was blowing up with security messages from the hospital/university where I work. The university ended up being closed today and the hospital, while no longer on lock down, has a high National Guard presence. I am hoping things are more calm when I go back to work tomorrow. While the looting and violence are not justified the anger certainly is. Sadly, the majority of people both in my presence and on social media choose the live in their middle class white bubble and are buying in to the hate and racism the media is perpetuating.</p> <p>What the news isn't showing, but many of my friends are, are all the organized clean up efforts, the local citizens and businesses bringing food and drinks to emergency responders, the gang members marching with the clergy and calling for peace, and peaceful protesters standing in between the cops and the violence.
