At my annual (which was right before we started TTC) I asked about setting up a pre-conception appointment and my doctor sort of giggled, looked at me like I had 3 heads and said they don't do things like that unless you have known, serious issues. She said to take a prenatal, checked the Rx meds to make sure they were ok to continue to take and said to give her a call in 6 months if I wasn't pregnant. She also recommended taking a DHA supplement if I didn't eat a lot of fresh fish, but I do, so I don't take that supplement.

My family doctor is also and OB-Gyn and when I went for my annual last year I asked her about coming in for an appointment before TTC but she said its not necessary because I have no on-going health issues or diagnosed fertility issues and no family history of fertility issues.

She told me when we are ready to try to go off BCP, start taking pre-natals and have some fun ;)

I never had a pre-conception appointment. However, at my post-partum checkup with my OB, she said to me, "I don't have to see you again for another year unless you want to have another baby before then." I didn't ask why but I guess if I even wanted to TTC #2 now, I'd go see my OB to talk about how this would even work since I still haven't had my period and I'm still breastfeeding, etc.

I had a pre-conception appt about coming off BCP, different charting/temping info, and about prenatals to take and meds to get off before actively TTC. It wasn't very thorough and I learned more on these boards than I did at the appt.

I never made a pre-conception appointment. I didn't think it was necessary. I do have my annual exam in a few days and I am going to mention that we have been TTC for over seven months with no results and see what she says.

Yeah, my pre-conception appointment was just "get off BC. And, you know, don't drink too much or whatever." Kind of useless, as I'd cut down on caffeine, alcohol, lost 10 lbs, was taking a pre-natal, etc.

ditto @abbyful. I mentioned at my annual we were thinking of trying in the next 9-18 months, and she said to start taking a prenatal vitamin as soon as I stopped taking the pill, and not to worry if it took my cycle a few months to straighten out, since that sometimes happens after being on the pill for a long time.

I just asked my doctor about what I needed to do at my last yearly appointment. She just told me take prenatal vitamins, take fish oil, and eat plenty of protein.

I think if you don't have any health issues that may make it challenging to TTC, or have any genetic diseases that run in the family that could be harmful, a pre-conception appointment isn't really necessary.

Well, I've started prenatals already, and I'm on a couple of low-dose antidepressants that I'm managing with my psychiatrist. She consults with local OBs and lactation consultants so our plan is as soon as I get a BFP, we get off the meds and revisit something more baby-friendly later on if need be. I talked to my GYN at my last appointment and she just said, just stop taking BC when you're prepared to get pregnant. Otherwise, I don't have any conditions or taking any other medications, and I'm getting up-to-date on my dental stuff (ugh) slowly. So I'm not sure what else a PC appt would do?

I had a pre TTC appointment but that was just bc I had my yearly right before we started. I don't think it's essential but she might be able to help a little. My gyn told me to start taking folic acid which I wouldn't have known to do on my own.

I talked to my obgyn before ttc because I was on a lot of meds for migraines and needed to know what to get off of and what I could still take. We also talked about starting prenatals.

I've heard a bit about women going to pre-conception appointments with an OB once they start trying. This would not even have occurred to me. I have a great GYN but that's her specialty, not OB, so I don't know if I should seek out an OB now, do a pre-conception appt with the GYN, or just skip it altogether? Those who have done this, was it automatic from the start? Or did you do it after trying for a while, or because of issues you knew you had once TTC?
