Wow, thanks everyone for the replies. Your feedback is really helpful. I'm going to work on a list of questions to ask (I like to over prepare for things :).

I did one, and I think it was worth it. I got a few shots I needed, was able to talk with my doctor without feeling rushed...I'd recommend it!

I did a preconception visit because I'm new in town and needed to make sure I liked the ob/gyn office I chose. They treated it as an annual since I was a new patient.

In addition to questions and the exam, they did a blood screening to make sure my rubella immunization was still good, and the doctor picked up potential PCOS symptoms and told me to come back for tests if nothing happens in 6 months. So, I'm glad I went! Since you have an appointment anyway they'll probably take care of all of this whatever type of appt it is.

Necessary? No, but it sure was helpful. My former (long story) OB and I talked about a variety of issues. She asked about my family history, and I also took a few tests that helped determine whether I was at risk for certain disorders. Like Arden, I realized that I was iron deficient, and I needed to work on that.

Mine was pretty pointless (since I spend too much time on the internet and knew the info). BUT I do recommend it because the doc will put it in your chart and if you ever have issues (lets hope not!) most insurance companies wont cover anything until after a year of trying, as recorded by your doc.

I went and got a full blood and urine panel. It's worth it to make sure you aren't deficient in any vitamins or minerals because that could affect your TTC or early pregnancy.

I discovered a significant anemia at mine, which would have been really crummy to discover while pregnant. I'd recommend a preconception visit to anyone!

I asked preconception questions at my annual, which happened to be about a month before conception (totally not the plan). I wouldn't say it was necessary, but the few questions I had were answered and I think it made my first OB appointment go more quickly, since they already had updated records on me.

I would bring any questions up at your annual--my doctor thought I was a little bananas by bringing it up and she told me to try OPKs after a few months and hopefully she'd see me soon

I didn't have an official pre-conception visit, but like you I had my annual appt around that time anyway and asked all my questions. I also switched from my gyn to a midwife, since I knew when I got pregnant, I'd want to go with a midwife anyway, so I was able to ask her a ton of questions. I don't think it is necessary but if you are going anyway, bring a list of questions with you.

Hi, this is my first post! I was wondering how many ladies did a pre-conception visit and if you view this as important necessary? I just learned about them and we won't be TTC for a few more months but I have my annual physical coming up soon and could call to make that at pre-ttc visit, officially. What happened at your pre-conception visit and was it worthwhile?
Thanks!
