Check with the state and district. Ohio has a hard cut off for birthday and it doesn't matter, you can't go to private or public if you aren't five by that date. The district where I work has an earlier cut off then the state. If you feel like your child would be ready and will be five between the district cut off and the state cut off you can apply for early entrance testing. Your child is then given assessments to determine if they are eligible (like IQ and achievement based assessments).

My son turns 5 in October so he will be almost 6 when he starts K in 2019. What month is your sons birthday?

What's the age cutoff and how close is he to it? If he's really close and you think he'll be ready, I'd definitely do the Private Kinder. We are considering the same here but I need to contract our district to see if they allow for it.

I would definitely do private K if that would allow you to bypass the age cut off at the public school.

@ShootingStar: That's awesome! In that case I'd definitely switch to private K so he's more ready for first grade.

@ChelseaRose: I'm trying to keep him from getting bored by doing the same school year, same classroom twice.

@HappyBaker: I called our public elementary school a while ago and they said that we can bypass the cut-off if he does private kindergarten.

@Smurfette: There's a private school down the street from us that has pre-k, k1 and k2. In a way I like that better for him so that he can keep being interested and engaged and learning new things. But our daycare only has preschool and pre-k.

@Mrs. Bee: That's what I'm worried about. Same classroom, same teacher. Only most, if not all, of the kids will leave and he'll be with the younger ones.

My friend's son got moved up to pre-k this year, a year early. She was concerned about him repeating it twice, but her center has pre-k1 and pre-k2. So next year he will take the 2. I think the difference normally is just how they place the kids based on age and where they are at developmentally. Does something by you have that?

Will he be able to go to 1st if he missed the cut-off? A friend of mine sent her daughter to private Kindergarten and then she had to repeat K when she decided to send her to public the next year since she missed the cut-off.

Are you trying to get around the new birthday cut offs or just trying to figure out how to keep him moving forward educationally based on his birthday? Here they offer transitional kindergarten at public schools for kids with fall birthdays that missed the cut off. My son was born in October and will qualify. I would not try to push him ahead and get him into kinder or try to bypass the new cut offs to make him the youngest kid for the rest of his school years.

You might want to check that your school district will let him enter first grade if he misses the cut off for Kindergarten - in our school you are in a grade based on your age no matter what grade that is. So for example, our town's cut off is Sept 1 and DD's bday is Sept 11. So the year she turns 5 we'll send her to private or daycare kindergarten, but then she'll have to do public kindergarten the next year anyway.

We repeated Pre-K

There are 2 classrooms for Pre-K so he switched for year 2.

When he got to K he did really well and was in an advance math and reading group.

He just started 1st grade this year and again so far is doing great!

I personally like having DS being the oldest vs. being the youngest - it fits his personality

I found out from my daycare yesterday that since DS misses the school cut-off he'll do pre-k twice. I really like my daycare but they don't do kindergarten. Our other option is that we could send him to private kindergarten (at another daycare or at a private school) and then would go to public school for first grade.

This is a few years off because DS is just under 2, but if we were to decide that we wanted to do the private K thing, we could send him to one of those schools next year.

On one hand I love our daycare and I don't want to move him. On the other hand, I hate to put him in a school for just one year and then transfer him yet again. But I'm not really liking the idea of making him repeat the year of pre-k either. I struggled with boredom in school starting in first grade because it was too easy. I never really developed great habits around schoolwork because I wasn't interested in it. I don't want the same to happen to DS.
