Ask specifically to clarify the issue on the behavior problem right away.

As a former preschool teacher, if there were behavior issues with the kid, instead of saying , "Johnny refused to listen to the teacher and didn't follow the rules," a nicer way to put it is "he had trouble with choices" or "we had trouble listening". The teacher might be just trying to word it in a nicer way and not complain by going into specifics. But if it bothers you, talk to the teacher and ask what the specifics was. So if you get, "he had trouble making a good choice" then ask the teacher to clarify what happened so you can talk it over with your LO. What kind of choices is he having trouble making? How can I help him make better choices?

yeah, I agree that negative comments in the folder several times a week isn't good. Do you have work colleagues that know this teacher? Do other people complain about her?

It's rough when it's someone that works at the same school. I've been in a couple of awkward work situations (I had my principal's son in my class, and once he did something really awful and his parent, my boss, was defensive about it) and there's no good way to approach these things. It's very awkward--I would address the communication. Send an nice email and phrase it like "I know you are very busy, but I would really appreciate you taking the time to answer the questions" and follow up as many times as you need. Next email, "I asked you two days ago about X, Y, Z, I know you are busy, but please respond when you have a free minute."

I think you should schedule a parent-teacher conference and voice your concerns.

So my son is in preschool at the same school where I teach 9th grade. I really dislike his teacher this year, but I don't know how to complain to a teacher who is also a colleague. He gets a folder sent home everyday with activities that they worked on and a space for comments from the teacher. 2-3 times a week it's a complaint- like "he didn't have his listening ears." Or "he made bad choices today."

I'm all for comments when he has done something really bad and something specific enough to have a discussion with him. But these notes seem more like complaints. He's a 4 year old boy but I'm sure he does more good than bad!

The teacher is also terrible about communicating. I've sent several emails this year asking simple questions about procedures in the lower school and have never gotten a response. I know she's busy, but I always return parent emails
