I had GD but the baby was the opposite on the small side. I had to get induced because too much fluid. Honestly, as long as you get the epi you'll be fine. I didn't feel anything :)

I personally don't buy in to the whole "I had to have a C-section cuz my baby was big" thing. I know so many women, my mother included, who have given birth vaginally and naturally to more than 9 lb babies. Intervention has gotten pretty ridiculous recently. Our bodies can do amazing things and God created us push out babies! I really think you should talk to your doc about your fears and mention your desire for a vaginal birth. Keep in mind that delivering on your back actually closes your pelvis and makes opening for baby smaller. When you are delivering a bigger baby, you might want to be able to move around/squat to use gravity to your advantage.

@LivsMama: Thanks for the link. I forgot you had written a whole post on it. I just knew that I had read a few things about your experience in different replies. I remember the post, now, though.
And I am a bit worried about BF after a c-section, but luckily I was listening half heartedly during that part of my breastfeeding class, and remember the lactation consultant said we could ask for one of them to be in the room when we deliver to help you feed immediately after birth. I guess you're drugged pretty well and the LC said that they've been known to hold the baby and your boob for you while your sleeping from the medications. I'll probably give her a call here in a few days to be sure I know what the plan is.

@red_seattle: @bree72: Def worth asking about stitching the muscles back together, but my OB said they rarely cut the muscles or even the fascia anymore. They manually separated the ab muscles for mine and didnt separate anything that was together before. But likeI said, worth asking. Each doctor might do it differently..

I also want to add to something @red_seattle said. I had no issues with delayed bonding or issues with BFing. The second I heard her cry, I was changed. And Liv is 8 months old and still going strong in the BFing department. So dont let those stories scare you

On the other extreme- my son was estimated to be 9lbs + at birth, I was positively feaked out! I didn't think he would be able to come out naturally, he had been measuring big all along. My doctor gave me 3 hours to push, otherwise we would go to surgery, which he wanted to avoid if possible. At 3 hours and 20 minutes of pushing my son came out naturally- at 6lbs 11 oz. He was very long, which had made their estimates much higher than he was, so their estimates are just that- estimates.

Hang in there, while labor isn't exactly something you can control, in the end you will have a perfect baby, so all you can do is go along for the ride! I wish I had that mind frame before labor, I probably would have pushed harder had I not expected it all to end in a c-section.

Oh, and if you do end up with a c-section, be sure to ask that the OB stitch your abdominal muscles together. Some don't because it's not needed, but you'll have a flatter stomach if they stitch back together everything they cut. (This is according to my family practice doc.)

I went through a long labor, pushed for 3 hours, and ended up with a c-section for a lot of reasons (heart rate dropped to 80 and didn't really recover, lots of meconium in the fluid, head a bit twisted in the canal, and failure to progress after pushing for 3 hours/being at 10cm for 4 hours). Baby ended up being 8lbs 1oz-- not huge but still apparently big enough for me to have a tough time. Anyway, DH was with me the entire time during labor, pushing, c-section, and recovery. Baby X was with us the whole time too, after he came out I was alert during the c-section and felt no pain-- just pressure and tugging, Baby X was held by DH as soon as they cleaned him off and got his APGAR scores, the anesthesiologist took pictures of the 3 of us while I was on the table being stitched up, and when we were all wheeled to the recovery room, Baby X latched on right away and I've been able to BF (5.5 months and going strong)-- he was alert and happy. None of those horror stories you hear about the babies being whisked away or the support person not being allowed or abnormal difficulties BFing. I was in pain after the c-section, and looking back, I was in more pain than I realized (after the first couple of days it was just when I was raising myself to a seated position from lying down, getting in and out of the car-- anything that used abdominal muscles), but the pain from labor contractions was so fresh that the pain from the incision felt like NOTHIN'. I was on percoset and a giant dose of ibuprofen for 2 weeks, and after that was pain free and back to normal in another week or 2. I was exhausted easily for 4 weeks, and moved slowly, but it wasn't awful. But overall, I'd say the c-section was a good experience, better than what it would have been with a vaginal delivery. I'm still keeping the VBAC option on the table with any future babies because I know it's better for me, but I have to say, in terms of recovery, I'd take the c-section over vaginal delivery.

I am a plus sized woman and have had two successful c sections experiences. Mine weren't for GD. I had twins who shared a placenta the first time and went c section instead of vbac for my second. My c sections were not bad at all. I had noproblem with the spinal block ( I had heard it could've difficult on larger women). I had developed preeclampsia with my twins and then had some issues with blood pressure during the surgery. It resulted in me being a little medicated and hazy for a few hours. They took the twins to the nursery with my husband while I recovered. I am told it was about 4 hours (seemed like minutes) then they brought me my babies. During that time they had a bottle because they had low blood sugar. I didn't mind. I knew I had plenty of time with my babies. The fact that we were t together right away was ok. We were healthy and that's all I cared about.

My secon c section was a single baby and I didn't have any issues. I was alert the whole time. The took the baby to the nursery with my husband while they stitched me up. We were brought back together in 20 minutes and she latched on to eat right away.

My recoveries were fine with each. I actually recovered faster than my friend who delivered naturally around the same time. Im not going to lie when you first try to get up after a c section it hurts but it is short lived within a few days it was pretty mild pain. Sneezing and coughing hurt too but nothing too bad.

Just talk to your dr about all your concerns. Ask why they want to do certain things. They usually have a reason for their reccomendations. I know I am different than some moms. I just did what the dr said and didn't argue because I just wanted my babies out and healthy. I didn't really care how and didn't have a birth plan.

Good luck and try not to worry too much!

@Nskillet: I found out yesterday that my baby is currently breech (at 37 weeks), so I'm being scheduled for a c-section, as well. It is not at all what I wanted or imagined, so I'm in the same boat and freaking out, as well. The unknown really is a sucky place to be sometimes.

@LivsMama: I've thought about your birth a couple of times yesterday morning since I found out, because I had remembered you didn't mind the c-section at all. Glad I saw this thread and got to see your words again. It makes me feel a bit better about the situation.

@itsmejules: @Goldilocks1107: THANK you both for bringing this option up to me. I'm really going to discuss it with my OB at my appt on Friday. I have another growth scan on the 13th to check on our little butterball so I have a feeling they will also have a better idea of what is happening then too.

If I can deliver this baby on my own, I really want to. If I can't I'm not opposed to c section just scared to be pushed into one.

Goldi I can't wait to see if the estimates on our bambinos is right! The difference for me is because of my GD I will not go beyond 40 weeks.

@Nskillet: As you know, we're both carrying babies in the 95th percentile, and my doctor hasn't said "boo" about c-sections or inductions and based on my last appointment, she sounds completely content letting me go up to 10 days past my due date (NOOOOO!!).
But, my mom gave birth naturally to two babies that were over 9 lbs (and over 21 inches), and she's an average-sized person (5'6"). If you aren't comfortable with what your doc is saying, maybe ask why they're thinking c-section (and if there's a less c-section happy OB you can see instead!).

My BFF had two 9+ lb babies vaginally (with epidural) and my cousin had her 9+ lb baby vaginally without epidural! It definitely can be done although you don't hear about it a lot these days with the rise in C-sections. Good luck! Wishing you a healthy and speedy labor and delivery!

the best thing I ever did was talk to my doctor about my fears of having a c-section at roughly 32 weeks - once we talked about what circumstances they would or wouldn't do a c-section - I felt SO much better and really felt like if it was meant to be, I would be okay with that. I highly recommend you having that conversation with your doctor.

I also had a c-section because my son was breech and I agree with @livsmama, the c-section (at least for me) wasn't bad at all. For baby #2, I chose to have a repeat c-section! A very close friend of mine had GD and her baby was 9lbs 10oz and she delivered her baby naturally. So it can happen either way!

My MW has delivered a LOT of big babies!

Just last week she delivered a 9 1/2 lb'r to a mom & a 10+lb'r to a ftm mom. The 9 1/2lb baby took a tad longer since his hand was up at his face but neither had any issues. Both were able to move & change delivery positions to what worked for them though so that is likely what may their delivery possible.

Hey ladies! So 34 weeks here with Gestational Diabetes. Sugars are diet controlled and I'm feeling amazing. However, my doctors have used the words "c-section" or "induction" a few times since my GD diagnoses and since determining my baby was 95th percentile for size at my 31 week appt. Just curious if anyone could share their large baby stories. Did anyone naturally deliver their babies large? Any C section moms care to share their experiences?

The jitters are setting in!
