Pre-lit! So much easier! And many of them now are the type where the whole strand doesn't quit just because 1 or 2 bulbs are out.

Unlit. Will last longer IMO. I also like to add some different size lights for a layered affect

We've had a real tree the past couple of years, but I have a pre-lit artificial that I used for at least 7-8 years in a row before that and had no issues with the lights. Having the lights already on the tree saves that extra step.

We got a great deal on a pre-lit one post-Christmas last year. The way I see it, the pre-lit gives you the ease of plug-it-in-and-you're-done, but you can always string a different set of lights on there if your taste changes or the tree burns out. Just don't plug the tree in if you want it unlit one year.

I don't remember noticing much of a price difference between pre-lit and unlit when I was shopping last year.

We've only had unlit and I don't mind it. The savings allowed us to get a great quality tree, and we haven't had issues with our strands of lights either. Trends seem to change often enough that by the time something happens to the lights you might want a different look anyway!

I'm going to be the odd man out and say unlit. We had a prelit tree and it crapped out on us after 5 years (not just replacing bulbs...just died). We got an unlit tree, did the lights once, and just leave them on from year to year (it just finished it's third year). If anything ever happens to the lights, I just need to replace strands and not the whole tree.

I've had the same pre-lit tree since 2005. It's so much quicker and easier to decorate. This year I replaced 4 bulbs, but I can only remember replacing bulbs a couple of times over the years, and then, only a couple at a time. Ours is the kind where the strand still works if one burns out. Conversely, my MIL threw out 5-6 strands of lights this year because they stopped working, and she didn't have the patience to figure out which bulb was at fault.

We have a pre-lit, and I think it looks great, but the bulbs keep burning out. My DH would tell you to go unlit after changing out bulbs each year

We didn't have a Christmas tree this year but I'm hoping to find a good deal on one now that it's after Christmas and save it for next year. I was planning on getting a pre-lit one because I'm all about ease and convenience but a couple people told me those lights go out fast. Which do you prefer, pre-lit or get lights separately? And if you know of any tree deals please share! Thanks!
