The way I see it, the pre-lit gives you the ease of plug-it-in-and-you're-done, but you can always string a different set of lights on there if your taste changes or the tree burns out. The savings allowed us to get a great quality tree, and we haven't had issues with our strands of lights either. We had a prelit tree and it crapped out on us after 5 years (not just replacing bulbs...just died). We got an unlit tree, did the lights once, and just leave them on from year to year (it just finished it's third year). It's so much quicker and easier to decorate. This year I replaced 4 bulbs, but I can only remember replacing bulbs a couple of times over the years, and then, only a couple at a time. Ours is the kind where the strand still works if one burns out.
