My kids' preschools didn't/don't have breakfast, but that wouldn't bother me, although I would like to see fruit with that. The paper towel thing would be whatever though. Full disclosure: I like to keep weekday expectations low. I don't want my kids thinking I'm getting up to make fresh pancakes (sometimes we have leftovers from weekend breakfasts) on weekday mornings (in elementary school.)

I have no idea what they eat off of (I guess I don’t care because I never even thought to ask).

I believe they do serve themselves and are expected to be fairly independent (but if they are struggling it’s not like the teachers will let them starve). From what I understand a lot of their meals are family style.

This is the pre-k breakfast menu for this week and the next 2 weeks (but it’s nyc public school):

Here's an example of what the school my LO goes to offers for meals for a week (they have a 4 week rotating menu). I can't speak to what they eat on as my LO is an infant but the fact that they provide breakfast, lunch, and a snack is part of why we chose the place.

We've used three different daycares/preschools so far.

The one that provided all the food:
Used styrofoam everything (ugh, the environment), except when they used just a paper towel.
Sometimes teachers served, sometimes a few students were asked to serve their tables.
Food was mostly basic and cheap, not the best nutrition.

Daycare, no food provided:
The students eat from their lunch containers.
The teacher always lays a paper towel under the container as a disposable place mat. I've been sending a cloth napkin and cloth placemat, but the teacher seems to leave them inside the lunchbox.

Montessori Preschool:
They encourage us to pack only nutritional items. Sweets are not allowed. They talk to the children frequently about health and trying new foods.
They encourage independence, so children learn to take charge of as much as possible. For example, snack time is on an individual basis. Children take turns serving their own snacks at the snack table whenever they feel hungry.
There is an emphasis on environmental responsibility, so we are encouraged to minimize disposable packaging. We are asked to provide cloth napkins.
The school composts scraps for their garden.
The containers and napkins are sent home for washing.

Surprisingly, this Montessori school is cheaper than either daycare, because it is nonprofit! I like the outlook of the Montessori school best, but sometimes I dread packing lunches; I think I'm getting into a rhythm now though.

My LO’s school is pretty plain for breakfast, but they feed the kids 5 times a day so I am not complaining. The kids eat off of paper plates and bowl though.

Typical breakfast would English muffin with cheese or Cheerios/ Cornflakes or Pancakes with strawberry topping.

My daughter is in the preschool class at her daycare facility. They serve a lot of cereal and fruit for breakfast, and sometimes have a waffle or french toast sticks instead of the cereal. They eat at a table in their class. The teachers put the food on a plastic plate or in a bowl for the kids. This morning they had cereal, so their fruit was on a napkin to the side of the bowl, but paper towels all the time sounds a little odd to me, and especially no help from the adults. I think it's a little odd that they've started giving the kids huge, tablespoon-sized spoons with their cereal instead of the little plastic kids spoons they used to use, but that seems to work for them.

My daughters' private preschool/daycare serves breakfast off paper plates. It's served family style and usually the parents make the plates at arrival but the helpers will make their plates if a parent has to run. The kids eat in their classroom until 2-2.5 for the extra hands-on help but after that they eat in the small cafeteria.

We pay average tuition for our area (suburb of Atlanta) and the menu for this week is:
Mon - French toast sticks, turkey sausage, fruit, cereal, milk
Tues - blueberry cornbread muffins, fruit, cereal, milk
Wed - turkey sausage, scrambled eggs, fresh fruit, cereal, milk
Thurs - pancakes, turkey bacon, fresh fruit, cereal, milk
Friday - apple cinnamon muffins, fresh fruit, cereal, milk

DS eats breakfast at home but occasionally has something small to eat when he arrives at preschool to smooth the transition. He eats off a paper towel. His preschool does not provide breakfast.

Yeah it seems a bit strange to me for the age as well. DS was in a daycare centre toddler room and then preschool room and they always had proper utensils and plates all through the 2.5 years he was there. It was morning snack which was like second breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack. They usually had cereal, toast, muffins or scones with a fruit. Not a lot of variation but the lunches had a lot of different stuff. They encouraged them to use the cups and utensils by themselves/with help from 18 months on, but teachers always served them from the cart as far as I know.

The eating off paper towels and buttering their own toast seems a little odd for that age. They give kids plates and prepare everything at my daughter's school.

The menu isn't super diverse but they don't serve the same thing every day. For example, here's the menu for this week:

Monday - whole grain cereal with fruit
Tuesday - whole grain pancake with fruit
Wednesday - whole grain waffle with fruit
Thursday - egg patty, english muffin, and fruit
Friday - biscuit, turkey sausage, and fruit

Our school only provides cereal, occassionally pancakes or something. The cereal is served by the kids to themselves in preschool and above into plastic bowls. The kids scoop the cereal and pour the milk, they are expected to clean up after themselves as well. Snacks they serve to themselves from the communal bowls. They also clean up after that. They usually eat off of paper towels.

@Mrs. Toad: @pinkb: Good to know other schools use paper towels too. I am trying to teach my kids the importance of mealtime and I feel like eating off paper towels takes away from that. The school has stacks of real plates and I am guessing they just don't want to do the pile of dishes.

@macintosh: I am sure the intention is for the kids to learn cooking skills, but there is no adult there to 'teach them', they are supposed to learn from watching the school age kids. Their is an adult in the meal room, but the adult is busy preparing the food and supervising however many kids end up in the meal room.

We have to provided meals and daycare provides 2 snacks, morning and afternoon. Depends on how it is served. Yes they try and have them learn to serve themselves, even pouring milk (out of a smaller container). Most snacks are on paper towels. Cereal is an exception, hey have disposable bowls. And there are some prepackaged, like apple sauce they give the little plastic cups of. I try to serve stuff on paper towels at home too to cut down on dirty dishes and I feel as if its not as bad/ unfriendly as paper plates.

@MrsBeluga: sounds pretty typical based on my limited experience - except for the lack of plates. DS rarely eats breakfast at school because he eats at home, but today he asked for some and was served oranges and cereal with milk. I know for lunches at his school they serve family style to encourage the kids to learn how to serve themselves. Could that be the approach they are going for with the toast?

We have to provide breakfast and lunch. Breakfast is either a paper towel or what it is in. I have noticed DD's (1 yr room) lunch was on a paper towel and DS's (3 yr room) is in the container. I think DD's (2 yr room) is now in the container as well. We are in a high cost of living area and daycare is expensive here.

Please tell me about what your pre-school breakfast looks like?

Do the kids eat off plates?
Are your kids expected to 'make' their own breakfast?
Is the menu pretty diverse?

My daughters pre-school has kids eating off of paper towels (just for breakfast), buttering their own toast, and the menu is basic (cereal + toast)... just wondering if this is normal or not... has me kinda mad given how much $$$$$ we spend to send her there.
