THIS was the chair we used on that beach trip! Sorry probably not helpful at this point but I was excited I found the exact chair: https://www.amazon.com/Tiny-Love-Take-Along-Bouncer/dp/B00G2Y65BQ

It was a loan from a friend so I'm not certain exactly what the brand was, but it was vaguely similar to this but not nearly as fancy http://gowithmechair.com/

It's hollow underneath so you'd be able to push it into the sand a bit. I think it would be pretty stable.

We had this last year when our son just started crawling and loved it! So quick to set up, I did it on my own. And it's really big and has its own "floor" to protect from sand.

I know you said you don't want to buy the bumbo but you might check craigslist for one. Ive seen them on there for $10. We bought ours at a consignment shop for $20. Totally worth it if you are planning to go often.

@PinkElephant: ha- I have that exact item in my bathroom right now! It was a hand me down and I never actually saw it for sale. But she likes to sit up from reclining so would topple herself out if I left her for a second. As it is she sits up in the bouncy seat and gets her head caught in front of the dangling parts.

How about using a mesh bath sling as a baby beach chair?

@PawPrints: well if it goes well we will probably go more often, but no it's not a big trip. I do feel like a tent would be good to have for a number of reasons though. What is the baby beach chair you mentioned?

We have been using a sun canopy. Ours require 3 easy tent poles and takes about 5 min to set up via 2 adulta. In regards to movement, it can be zipped up all the way or part of the way or none of the way. There are also pop-up play tents available but I couldn't sit in there and nurse him.
A picture... he rolled during his nap today :(

I can definitely understand not wanting to buy more crap, but when we took our 3.5-mo old to Hawaii for a week I do not think I would have had much fun wearing her the entire time we were on the beach - and she hated the Bumbo. We loved our little baby pop-up tent and also this little baby beach chair (like a hammock she buckled into, much more comfortable than a Bumbo) to set her down in. The tent was, to me, an essential. This is the one we bought; it folds down into a flat circle for packing: https://www.amazon.com/Schylling-2166-Infant-UV-Playshade/dp/B0014I4TYA

I think it's likely you could resell it for most of retail if you want, after the trip.

[ETA] Oh just saw this is a short outing for you not a big vacation. Just take a PnP!

@honeybear: yes definitely a short trip. I am thin king late morning before nap. And probably baby wearing I just think I will get really hot. Luckily it's like a ten minute drive!

@mauxie: I was look at the Go Pod or something but like you, I don't really want to buy more crap. Will probably just baby wear. We don't have a bumbo or I would- another thing I kind of want but don't want to buy for probably our last baby.

I am in this situation, too.. LO3 is 5 months, can't sit well yet, but rolls/scoots. I don't know how it will go at the beach putting him on a towel bc of all the sand! Don't want it getting into his face and stuff.. which I'm sure will be flying around a bit bc of my 3 yr old and 2 yr old. I looked into travel exersaucers but don't really want to spend the money on something that will barely be used...

Aside from the usual beach stuff, I think we will babywear and maybe take one of the baby chairs we have (bumbo or prince lionheart), if there's space in our wagon.

Don't forget babypowder or cornstarch for when you need help getting all the sand off.

My strategy with an infant was short trips and minimal stuff: blanket, towel, water, hats and rashguards for everyone, sunscreen, and snacks (if it's been a while since or going to be a while until a meal). I took my 6 month-old into the water with me regularly, although I obviously didn't swim and I wouldn't have done it if the ocean was rough. I liked wearing LO in a carrier onto and off the beach, so I had hands free for carrying the bag. I really liked walking along the edge of the water with the baby in the carrier. You could do that while your husband watches your older child, or everyone could go! I went for some really long walks this way when LO was an infant.

This is still my basic beach strategy. We go, we play hard, and then we go home. :)

What gear was essential for beach time with an infant? I feel like we are in a tricky stage with my 6 month old- she's not crawling but she rolls and scoots, so she can move from wherever I put her. But she can't sit up well so I can't do that little trick of a little baby pool for her to sit in. And since we have an almost 3 year old who will be running around it would be nice if I can put her down sometimes (though I'll definitely do this as a two adults two kids situation for the time being!!)

Any favorite tips and tricks?
