I trifold mine. I started out with two thirsties newborn covers then when LO grew out of those I got 10 flip covers, but you probably don't need that many. They were on sale so I stocked up. I wash them every 2-3 days.

You may want some diaper liners for when your LO starts solids.

We had about 6 covers! We used Snappis to fasten the prefolds.

@runsyellowlites: Oh man I have so much to learn! Googling jellyroll fold now.... Thanks!

Oh and did you have to buy a specific NB size for the first little while?

We have 4 diaper covers and I have never had any issues. I think it would also depend on how you fold your prefolds.... If you just tri-fold them and lay them in the cover you'll likely need alot more. We do the jellyroll fold and rarely have any poo leak onto the cover so the 4 works.

I posted a while back about cloth diapering in an apt with coin op laundry... I have a small stash of all-in-one's, and still plan on using those, but am considering a diaper service for the bulk of our diapering.... But I have question! The diaper service brings the amount of clean prefolds we request but it's on us for the diaper covers.... How many diaper covers do you think we should buy?? Any other cloth diapering accessories necessary?
