@ladyfingers: I wanted to, but unfortunately, the wait for doctors in this town is craaaaazy. We just moved here three months ago (literally, like 1-2 weeks before I got pregnant!) so we're stuck with who we have. :/ We're trying to move back home now, so I can go back to my old ob/gyn (and other reasons!).

@laylabelle: yeah, hang in there! I know there are risks, but it's better than the alternative. If you're super worried you could try getting a second opinion maybe?

@laylabelle: My doctor said I would need a cerclage if the ultrasounds showed my cervix shortening (dilating). But for me, the ultrasounds won't start until the 16th week. Maybe you're a higher risk because of the biopsy! I've only had one cryo on pre-cancerous cells.

ETA Also, welcome! :)

Hey! Sorry, I know I'm really late on this, but I just joined. I had two LEEP's, and a cold knife cone biopsy for cervical cancer almost five years ago, which also left me with an incompetent cervix. My doctor is doing checks and ultrasounds every two weeks and in my 14th week (I'm 12 now) I have to have a cerclage (sew the cervix shut) for the remainder of the pregnancy. Has you dr said anything about doing that?

I'm mainly nervous because I have to have an epidural at 14 weeks....and the cerclage itself comes with a lot of possible side effects. I'm hoping for none, but was hoping someone else had some advice/experience with it!

@ladyfingers: I thought biweekly was right, but when I said it someone this morning they were like "Twice a week?!" Then I started doubting myself. Ha ha.

@jojogirl: I'll keep you updated if there are any issues! My doctor didn't really seem to concerned, and I'm not too worried about it. I knew going into this pregnancy that it may come up, so it really wasn't that much of a surprise. And like I said, I'd rather they be on top of it then just ignore it. But on top of all the worry about the toxoplasmosis, it just kind of flipped me out.

I had a LEEP 2 years ago and am concerned about this too. I'm still ttc so can't help answer your question, but will be following this thread! After going off bc I developed stenosis from the LEEP which was just corrected 2 weeks ago. Hoping that's the end of my side effects. :-)

I have the same thing. I have to go in for biweekly (you had the right word!) ultrasounds between 16 and 24 weeks. But she said that if, at my 20-week anatomy scan, things still look good, then she'll just stop doing them. She said most people are showing her signs by 20 weeks. I'm not overly concerned, she also told me it's not exactly common and it sounded like even if it does happen, they're monitoring it appropriately so if I do start showing signs (it's from the baby's weight), they can take precautions so nothing bad happens. I'm happy I brought it up, I almost forgot.

GL on your lab results!

@Mrs. Jacks: I did a follow-up yesterday on the original post. Basically, i am positive for the IgM marker, so the additional blood work is being sent out to the lab in CA for further analysis. They'll be able to tell how old the infection is and what the chances are of transference. But I had an ultrasound and the OB said so far it looks ok, though it is kind of early to tell much. I should have the blood work results in about a week, which is WAY faster than I expected from the only lab in the US that does this!

I had a leep a few years before my pregnancy and was told the same thing. If you look it up, the risk of having an incompetent cervix from a leep isn't much higher than the risk of having an incompetent cervix without ever having a leep. I didn't have any issues during my pregnancy and never saw an OB again after she told me to get an ultrasound every 3 weeks (I switched to midwives and they weren't worried at all). I wouldn't worry too much about it since it is so rare and personally I think doctors are way too cautious (but sometimes they have to be to cover their butts).

I had a LEEP 6 years ago and I had no issues...My doctor was more concerned wtih the potential scar tissue that can be associated with the proceedure than premature dialation, but the scar tissue turned out to be a non issue too!! (I only labored for 4 hours and 6 minutes!)

@skipra: Thanks! I don't know why I keep saying biweekly, it's actually every other week. I was surprised, because in the 11 years since the LEEP, every doctor I've seen says my cervix looks good and healthy. But the high-risk doctor yesterday said the concern is that dilation can occur at the top of the cervix, which can't be seen by a regular pelvic exam. Maybe they're more concerned because of the other issues?

I mean, I'm happy knowing that if they are concerned they are going to closely monitor it.

I had a LEEP only 6 months before getting pregnant and although it is noted all over my chart, no one seemed overly concerned. I started spotting intermittently around 13 weeks so I had a few cervix checks but nothing even close to biweekly. I think they checked it twice by vaginal exam - @10w initial appointment and at 13w because I had the spotting for several days. It was also checked by ultrasound @18w and 25w. By the last ultrasound the spotting had stopped and everything checked out so I haven't had anything further (almost 31 weeks now).
I think some doctors are more cautious than others. Good luck and I hope that cervix stays strong!

So on top of my toxoplasmosis issues, I was also told yesterday that due to a LEEP I had 11 years ago for precancerous lesions on my cervix, I am at risk for incompetent cervix. I have to have biweekly trans-vaginal ultrasounds from now until 26 weeks to monitor my cervix and make sure it's not dilating prematurely. If after 26 weeks everything looks ok, then they will back off on the ultrasounds.

The doctor told me that 99 out of 100 pregnancies after LEEP have no issues, so I'm not too worried. It just was a lot on top of everything else yesterday. Anyone else had this?
