I was on zoloft throughout my entire pregnancy and am still taking it now while breastfeeding. Multiple doctors told me it was safe for pregnancy and breastfeeding. I have not had any negative side effects at all. It's been great for my anxiety and I plan to stay on it for a while.

My DD is 3 months old and totally healthy! Both me and my sister in law were on zoloft throughout our pregnancies and gave birth to healthy babies. My other sister in law who was not on any meds throughout her pregnancy had a son with a mild heart defect. I've never heard anything about heart defects with zoloft before, it's super common to take while pregnant!

@Becky: I am another vote for Zoloft. I take it before bed and I have a hard time getting up 1-2 hours after I take it but other than that have no sleepiness/dizziness side effects.

I started Zoloft after my first was born because of severe PPD/PPA. Stayed on it through my second and still taking it while pregnant with #3. The thoughts on it change over time. #2 and #3 will only be 18 months apart, but while pregnant with #2 it went from "slight chance of withdrawal" to "may have an increased chance of heart defects plus neonatology will need to be in the delivery room". I have multiple OBs tell me that the neonatology thing in the delivery room is very new and in their opinion overly cautious. Both #1 and #2 have heart defects, but I wasn't on Zoloft with #1 and #3 doesn't appear to have any. So I take the heart defect issue with a grain of salt. Heart defects are the most common birth defect anyways, so if there is a 50% increased chance that means the chance of having a heart defect is 1.5% instead of 1%. Not something I would be worried about if your doc brings it up.

Just a question, I’ve heard the side effects of Zoloft can be bad. I’m especially concerned about the sleepiness and dizziness. I definitely don’t want to feel more tired—I thought Antidepressants would help with fatigue—and I have a long history of lightheadedness (likely orthodontic hypotension) and dizziness. What are your experiences with side effects?

Another vote for Zoloft. I started right after giving birth and continued the whole time I nursed.

After years of trying to figure out what was wrong on my own I finally started seeing a therapist and she told me I clearly have anxiety and am probably depressed. This goes back to my childhood (I completely forgot my mom and doctor had discussed going on medication when I was in HS and I refused—ugh) so I am so relieved to finally have an answer, and will be talking to my primary in 2 weeks about going on medication. However we’re probably going to start TTC sometime in the next year and I want to choose something I can stay on while pregnant (I know it can take a while to find the right medication). I don’t love my doctor but am stuck with her for now, so want to go in with some knowledge of my own. Any tips for anxiety and depression medications that are safe during pregnancy?
