It was awesome. We had a midwife come to our house after we went home. :)</p> <p>They had a very similar "you're just pregnant" mentality. It was very laid back. They don't weigh you or harass you about weight gain. It was great. I found the article interesting. There are parts that sound nice and parts that make me glad to have given birth in the US. However, I am one who wants a few days in the hospital. My recovery was brutal and I did not want to be dealing with that at home. It's funny, some people want to be home right away when they have their second. For me, my daughter will be nearly 3 when my second is born and I am looking forward to having 2 days of being alone. It seems to be a uniquely American perspective to view pregnancy as a medical condition to be managed, vs a normal course of life that doesn't require much intervention unless there are concerns.</p> <p>I loved giving birth in Australia and especially going home four hours after DD2 was born. I stayed in the hospital for two nights with DD1 but it was totally unnecessary. Following my vaginal birth, I couldn't get out of the bed for 2 days, no way I could have climbed the stairs to my apartment. I am all for the woman's right to choose in these situations...you want to go home, great. You want to stay, great. It's when someone else makes the decision that I bristle.</p> <p>I did have a midwife that visited, twice, within the first two weeks, she was a lifesaver. Make no mistake, we paid for the services via our very expensive health insurance. And other countries pay for these services via their higher taxes. You can leave after 3 hours (or stay for as long as a week if you like). Many women I know chose to have a woman similar to the kraamzorg come help for the first 2 weeks. I needed to be home in my bed being a mom. </p> <p>It's funny, with both of my babies, I was back up and at em and out of the house the next day. And I get a ton of flack for it. As someone who is prone to depression if I'm idle, why should I be home in bed if I feel perfectly well? Anyways, just my 2 cents.
