@DesertDreams88: Yes, it's just iron in liquid form, that is ingested orally. You can get it in a bottle from the pharmacy (some may have to special order it if it's not in stock).

@DesertDreams88: This is an elemental Liquid iron supplement, it tends to absorb better than the pills, but the dose will be different and you should consult your doctor. I gave the pediatric version to LO, it tastes disgusting, but works really well.

@DesertDreams88: I have ITP (low platelets). They got lower during pregnancy. I don't think it caused extra exhaustion. My platelet level is usually around 70,000.

Anemia could definitely be causing your exhaustion though! Hope you feel better soon! Or at least once the baby is here. <3

@DesertDreams88: she means the liquid oral version. I have seen people recommending floradix as having better absorption, which is a brand of liquid oral iron that seems to be preferred by vegetarians and health conscious people. Also wanted to make sure you know to not only take your iron with vitamin c, but avoid dairy around the time you take
It as well! Since calcium inhibits absorption. Sorry you are feeling so poorly and I hope time and some of the tips people are giving you help!

@periwinklebee: just clarifying, liquid iron is something you mix with a drink? Not an infusion, where it would be, like, directly into your bloodstream I think?

@DesertDreams88: I don't have low iron, but I do have low platelets (92,000) and have had for the past few months. I do feel tired all the time, but who knows if it's the platelets or just my autoimmune issues. =) =)

I've had problems with anemia not responding to standard iron supplementation in the past, but not during pregnancy. What ultimately made a big difference for me was taking liquid iron with vitamin C and orange juice, and avoiding any foods that could interfere with absorption around the time that I took it. I absorbed the liquid iron dramatically better than the pills - and according to the hematologist I saw this is generally true - but it's pretty nasty stuff so I see this as a last resort when numbers aren't responding to pill iron supplementation. I hope you feel better soon.

I had low iron and low platelets with both of my pregnancies, and to be honest, it only got better after having the baby. Iron supplements only helped minimally so I ended up with infusions every week instead. I basically would put my toddler to bed at 7:30, fall into bed myself, and wake up to the alarm at 7:30 the following day, still feeling like I'd gotten maybe 2 hours of sleep.

I was anemic during pregnancy. That combined with a toddler was a whole new level of exhaustion for me. I took iron supplements and it helped some.

Yes I had pregnancy anemia and yes I was exhausted. Diet changes didn't help me anyway. Supplements did minimally, but in the end I had to have infusions (not transfusions).

I don't have the platelet issue but I do have low iron and I can't always take iron because it does a number on my stomach but if I don't take it at all I get tired and dizzy to the point that I have a hard time walking. :( I read that iron gets absorbed better on an empty stomach with OJ. Anecdotally eating meat does seem to help. I went a couple weeks pretty much without/very little and I felt significantly worse. But I also think that I maybe wasn't eating enough of other things to make up for it and you probably are because you've been vegetarian for a long time, so I don't think it'd help you anyway, but for me it did. Could maybe be another vitamin though. Sorry you're feeling so tired despite the supplements. I hope you figure it out soon!!

Guys I am so exhausted and I'm only 19 weeks. Work has been fine, life has not (DH had surgery, a sinus infection, and a totaled car crash in the past 3 weeks), and one toddler. I don't think it's the life stuff, I think it's my blood issues. When will it get better?

My iron & platelets are low, like they were with my last pregnancy. I don't know my iron stats - I'll find out on Wednesday. My platelets are about 120,000 which isn't a big issue just yet. My dr put me on iron supplements (like 300% of daily needs) and I take them with Vit C halfway through the day, about 6 hours out from my prenatals. It's been 3 weeks of supplements & I'm still dragging despite getting 8-9 hours of sleep a day (not always in a chunk, sometimes LO wakes at night and sometimes I take naps).

If you had anemia and/or low platelets during pregnancy, did it create fatigue?? Any tips for handling this? All I want to do is lay down all the time, but teaching doesn't allow that ;) nor does my toddler.

ETA: I eat 2-3 servings of fortified cereal a day too, but no meat. Changing my diet is a non-starter. All my stats have been good throughout my life (lots of bloodwork every 1-2 yrs); only issue is iron & platelets in pregnancy. Also I drink tons of water, 80+ oz a day.
