I would for sure let my family know first, I think letting them know on FB would be hurtful (I know I would be hurt.) because it is such an unpersonal way.

@swurlygurl: That's so cute!
@LindsayInNYC: Yeah, I think I'll do something in the mail for my family. I won't tell them to call me though, harsh as that sounds. They'll call soon enough.
@prettylizy: Lol, I'm waiting to make any official announcements besides to a few very close friends and HB until I have my dating scan next week and we find out when the EDD actually is.

@FarmWifeGina: We're similar - DH's parents have an idea that we're TTC but my parents don't. If we get lucky this next cycle or two, we'll be able to tell his parents in person since they're coming out here for July 4 (they don't live nearby). But, I don't know when we would tell my family. I also know DH's parents will be ecstatic and it's anyone's guess with mine... I think mail would be a good idea. Send them something and tell them to call before they open it?

My parents live 1,500 miles away, so I made cupcakes and iced them with pink frosting, then got a pink paint chip and wrote 'it's a girl' and stuck it in the top of one of the cupcakes. Then I facetimed my parents and showed them the cupcake platter.

@MrsTiz: Lol, WE didn't even know we were TTC. And even we were, we wouldn't have told family because none if us do that sort of thing.

But that's a cute idea. I'm also thinking about telling my side with the photo announcement in the back of the annual photo book of the kids I do for the grandparents (that I usually give at Christmas, but have been extremely late with this year. Oops.). Honestly, I'm not close with my family and I could care less about telling them in person/seeing their reaction and hearing their Quiverful tripe. But I should probably tell them, one way or another, before I put it on Facebook. Really, though, it's the ILs that I'm thinking about and trying to figure out how to announce to. They wouldn't care if we announced to everyone at the same time, but I do wanna see their reactions.

Do they know you were TTC?

You could always put a onesie in the mail to your parents and tell them to call you before they open it, so you can see their reaction. Maybe act like it's from your oldest LO, that they made them something and you wanted to send it, and have a onesie/mug/shirt/picture frame, etc. and facetime so that "LO can see your reaction" :)

Even if it's not as fun, I would tell your family over the phone. I know my family would get upset if they found out over facebook and not from me. They will still get to see your cute facebook announcement, even if it's not a surprise.

@Mrs. Champagne: Yeah, I could do that too, although my BIL and SIL did that a few months ago to announce their pregnancy a couple months ago and then miscarried only a few days later. So, I would kinda feel like I'm copy-catting in the least sensitive way possible, know what I mean? Or maybe I'm just over thinking it. Announcing isn't near as fun when you have distance involved. :(

Maybe facetime with them, and be like "omg I just sent you the best email, look at it!" and it could have your announcement?

i think you know your family best. if you think they'll be incredibly hurt/upset/offended etc etc then I wouldn't. if you think that it would turn out totally fine, go for it! i think face timing and being like, "oh, check out the photo I just posted!!" or something (even if it's a status, it'll get them to look!) could be totally fun!

I know it's lame, but I have a really fun photo idea for announcing our pregnancy on Facebook, but positively NOTHING in the way of ideas for telling our families, all of which live 1,000 miles away. And I don't just wanna tell them on the phone or whatever. So I'm wondering how awful it would be to put the picture on Facebook and let everyone know at once. I guess to make it a little more special, we could have them on FaceTime when I post the announcement and they could be the first to see it and we could get see their reaction. I dunno, I want something special, but I'm not sure how to do it long distance and I'm plumb outta ideas.
