I wanted to update this in case anyone finds this post in the future. My carpal tunnel just kept getting worse and worse. I had to wear braces 24/7 and would wake up with "dead hand". So, my hand was fully asleep and I couldn't uncurl it from a fist without pain. My hand constantly fell asleep and if I tried icing my wrist, I would get electrical shocks through my whole arm.

I am 24 weeks pregnant today and went in for the injection. My hand doc was great, calm, helped calm me. The injection did not hurt that badly. He numbed the area and then the needle was in my hand for about 60 seconds. It didn't really hurt- it was mostly just annoying. Felt like the stick you feel when you get blood drawn.

It's been 11 hours since the injection. Still have some numbness but my hand is usable already. I wouldn't hold something heavy but I can hold lighter things without worrying I will drop them. I can tell it's already healing and getting stronger. I'm doing a lot of opening and closing my hand to help get movement going.

I have to wear the night brace for a month but should not be wearing a day brace anymore.

@mediagirl: yes, I didn’t wear the wrist brace after delivery and was completely pain free within 2-3 weeks. I used a Furturo and could type reasonably well on a laptop.

@mediagirl: Furturo makes a women’s brace that is pretty slim and works well. I got it at Target. The Velcro wore out eventually but it took years.

@iluvboba637: I just started seeing a chiropractor for mine and it was actually a neck issue, not carpal tunnel - it’s really helped! Acupuncture helped too. I’ve had it since law school and it got bad after my first and flared up this pregnancy as well.

@mrslibrarian: how long was your recovery from the surgery?
@LBee: I haven't been able to wear my rings in forever. :(
@iluvboba637: are you considering doing anything about it?
@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: did it go away?
@yerpie110: @travellingbee: hearing that it was bad in the third tri is really worrying me. If it's this bad right now, how much worse is it going to get....

and now I'm worried it's happening to my right hand, too.

I’m an outlier too. I got it both pregnancies and it’s still hanging around. Ds is 5, and DD is 2. My hands are numb or tingly every now and then especially anything that is fine motor. Pregnancy really broke me. :(

@mediagirl: I hate to be the outlier.... It got better after birth, but I still have some issues with it (6+ months later). My hands get numb / tingle a lot at night and I have to take off my rings.

Also wanted to echo that it went away almost immediately after birth. So there's that. BUT December is not exactly around the corner... Mine was so bad last time (especially when sleeping) that I would probably consider an injection this time (if it happens).

Yes, I had it with my pregnancy. My doctors didn’t offer an injection. Instead they told me to get a wrist brace from the pharmacy, which did provide relief. I only wore it as needed at home and all the time at work, because if I had a flare up in the meeting then I would have to go all the way back out to my car to get the brace.

I didn't have carpal tunnel but it did make my cubital tunnel worse (same thing just the compression is in the elbow not the wrist and affects the pinky and ring fingers and the outside of the forearms) I have received steroid shots for other nerve issues and really really hate them they provide relief for such a short time compared to how frequently you can get them, I would get relief for about a week maybe two and could only get the shots every 4 weeks and they get less effective over time.

Had it with my second, only in the last trimester though. It was awful but I didn’t know anything about injections. I would wake up in the morning and my hands would be swollen like this:

I had it with my 1st pregnancy but not my 2nd - wore braces 24/7 at the end because it was miserable. I was never offered the shot (maybe because I was so far along?) but if I was I probably would have done it. Mine went away within a week or 2 after delivery as well.

I had it with both pregnancies during third trimester, worse the second time around. First time I only need the brace at night, but second time, I wore them almost constantly by the end. I was offered the shot for my second pregnancy, but declined because I was close enough to my due date. Thankfully, it went away almost immediately after I gave birth, though the second time it took a touch longer.

@mediagirl: if you’re already doing braces all the time and not getting enough relief i would probably get the shot. My ob offered it as an option to me this time but I’m not there yet on severity thankfully. It did go away quickly both times for me - as soon as swelling started to dissipate in that first week.

I had it with both pregnancies, but in my feet. I had to stop running because of it. I think it went away pretty quickly with both, definitely within 2.5 weeks. It was definitely bearable but feet are different than hands for sure!

I didn’t have it with my first, but it was horrible with my second. Now, with my third, it started a week or two ago (I’m 30 weeks). I didn’t use braces or anything last time. I found that sleeping with my arms on pillows helped. It was gone pretty much immediately after delivery, which was good because I was afraid I wouldn’t even be able to hold the baby safely. The numbness is getting pretty bad already this time, so not sure what I’m going to do!

OMG yes, I had it last time and it was the worst!!! Mine was towards/during 3rd trimester. Never did the injection. Wore splints nearly 24/7 and tried acupuncture for it. It's because of swelling pushing on nerves usually. :/
