I am dying y'all! My boobs have hurts so bad the past day I'm not sure how much more I can handle. Plus, DS bit me so hard last night he left teeth marks! I guess he fell asleep and just clenched down and I screaaaaaaaameed! Hoping the pain gets better. :-(

@Bao: The only conflicting things I've really heard were from ob's... which we know even in pp that they aren't very well versed in breastfeeding, I imagine breastfeeding & pregnancy is FAR out of their realm of knowledge with it being so much more uncommon!

@Rainbow Sprinkles: Eek! I hope she calms down some soon! Did you get her teething necklace back on?!

@matador84: I'm pretty sure she probably suggest a daily cal-mag to all her bf'ing moms but I'm sure just to make sure I'm really getting enough calcium & the mag is to help absorption.

My right boob is better today but still kinda hurts when he latches. I can't wait to hear all the comments ill get from people who know I'm breast feeding when they find out I'm pg. I am going to give a mouthful!

@matador84: Eek! P recently bit me & I had to not nurse on that side for 2.5 days while it healed. I tried to nurse through it but it ended up kind of infected so I had to stop. It was pretty brutal but we got through it..... I pumped that side a few times during the day & while my supply dipped a bit, it came back up as soon as she was back on that side.

Boo! I think my breastfeeding days are almost over! Last night DS bit me HARD and I don't know if that caused the nipple pain I'm having today and/or a result of sore nips but my right nipple is so red and hurts soooooo bad! That's his favored side too and it's killing me to nurse on that side. Don't know if I should start weaning or just suck it up...we've almost made it to a year! He's 10 months.

@Navy_Mommy: I think it makes sense that the unborn baby would take precedence over breast milk but it seems to be unsettled science, which is probably why there's a variety of responses from practitioners.

I don't think starvation is very likely while pregnant and I'm guessing that's not really what the midwives who brought it up to me meant either unless some famine came to the US or a mom had an eating disorder but I do think being malnourished might be something to consider since mom, unborn baby and breastmilk are going to take a lot of calories/nutrients. But nutrition isn't something taught very well in medical/nursing schools so I don't think they knew much more to say to me than just that.

I had researched nursing while pregnant pretty thoroughly so I felt confidant I was consuming enough good stuff for all of us. I also run at pretty intensely, though backed off a bunch this pregnancy, but that might be why they brought it up as well, I don't think it's an irrational thing for them to have brought up, it just wasn't presented in a helpful way where they considered more solutions other than to stop breastfeeding, which was the issue I had with their comment.

@Maysprout: right, because there won't be enough nutrients for the baby. Breastfeeding won't hurt an unborn baby (nutrients wise) because the baby takes precedence over breastmilk. You would feel the effects of not eating enough before the baby does.

ETA - being MALNOURISHED and not consuming enough to provide for a pregnancy, breastmilk, AND your own needs are two completely different things.

@Navy_Mommy: If a mom is malnourished it's much worse for the unborn baby than the mom though it can cause problems for both. But for most moms in first world countries that's not really a problem as long as they're taking vitamins and eating plenty.

Kind of just now catching on on this thread since my BFP--still nursing my 10 month old 4x daily. He goes to daycare 3x week and takes 1 bottle there. I was planning on nursing until he hits a year and then slowly weaning, but might as well keep going if I can I guess.

I just definitely don't want to have to go back to work in September and pump again.

@runsyellowlites: I actually lost my supply when DD was 15 months old (I was 3 months pregnant). :( I didn't take any supplements, so no advice--sorry! She still wanted to nurse before naps and bedtime though. I'm pretty sure she got nothing for 1-2 months before she started getting colostrum. I read that colostrum gets the bowels moving for toddlers bc my girl pooped 3-5x a day. :P :)
I continued to nurse until the day I went into labor and nursed her as soon as I got back home with DS. Having a nursing toddler REALLY helped with relieving engorgement. In the early days I nursed her on demand. She was only 20 months old when baby brother came home so we had some jealousy issues and neediness.
At 27 months I nurse her once a day. Would love to wean her, but I have no idea when I'm gonna do it. Nipple sensitivity went away early on, but my breasts hurt all throughout my pregnancy. In a weird way nursing helped with the pain--like it was a good pain..?
There are times when I REALLY hated nursing her and it would make me so angry that an almost 2 year old (now 2+ year old) wanted to nurse, but those feelings were short lived and were few and far between.

I think nursing my daughter contributed to the vag bone pain and to my early dilation and effacement though. At 36 weeks I was 3cm and 75% effaced.

My son was born at 39+ weeks and weighed 8lbs 8 ounces though!

@Navy_Mommy: I hope you're able to nurse til the end and tandem nurse once baby's born too! Good luck!! My kids are almost 21 months apart so pretty similar age gap to your LOs.

Hope all you mamas are able to nurse for as long as you hope!

FWIW when I was pregnant with number two and my OB AND the nurse from the health clinic both told me to stop nursing, I was just like, "mmm hmmm." Maybe I took the easy way out but like so many other things, it was easier to just nod and smile and do whatever the heck I wanted.

I was only seeing RNs and midwives at the practice I went to and some were all about breastfeeding while pregnant and some said I was going to either starve myself or the baby and to def stop by 20 weeks. I'm not a very big person but not super tiny and I pointed out I'd gained a decent amount of weight so it wasn't affecting that but it seems like one of those things if people are of a mindset than reason doesn't work so well. We're pretty much done nursing now though.

@Penny Lane: I experienced a lot of agitation, I was really surprised how intense it was. I could have still made it work but since she turned 2 I was apathetic about still nursing plus irritated every time she tried.

@chopsuey119: my "rule of thumb" is until they tell me I'm not healthy enough to have sex, I'll continue to nurse. If I HAD to stop before BabyDeux is born I would still try to get him to start again when the new baby gets here. I would really like to continue tonurse until he's 2 (April 1st next year... I'm due with BabyDeux at the end of January)

Even moreso, you don't tell someone you're concerned about something they're doing possibly causing them to miscarry on their FB WALL! How tacky is that! Even if she was truly concerned she should've messaged you the information so you could be informed & make your own educated choice! Good job just posting the info & not saying anything else... that would've been difficult for me too!!!!

@runsyellowlites: One of DH's cousins posted on my wall on Facebook, "I just noticed you said you're still breastfeeding. I thought I should warn you, if you don't stop you're going to miscarry." I almost lost it. I almost said some realllllly horrible things (her son was so obese before he was potty trained that he had to wear adult diapers and I almost made a snarky comment about how if she had breastfed him longer that wouldn't have been an issue). But I just linked her to some resources that basically say that's a load of crap.

What scares me is she's a nurse...like she should know better. And she should realize I wouldn't do something that would endanger my pregnancy without doing adequate research first.

@Navy_Mommy: Okay so far!

I got a little overwhelmed last night but P decided she needed to have a 2 hours nurse-a-thon between 4 & 6 in the morning! Pretty sure it was the demand itself & not anything to do with being pregnant that I kept trying to unlatch her & roll her back to her bed! lol

So far only my mom & sister know & they haven't said anything! (surprisingly). They weren't all that thrilled about another baby so close to P though SOOO I think I may just shut people up by bringing up tandem nursing... around here bf'ing makes people kind of uncomfortable & it scares them away. lol

I have my first midwife appt on Monday so we'll see what she says..... she'll probably just give me some nutrition tips with the demand. *shrugs shoulders*

Can't wait to read your blog post!!
